The sheriffs took me back to the bureau, worried that I might be next on the Feral Rogues‘ target list.
There, the sheriff in charge of the autopsy reported that multiple abductors had been at the scene, based on the evidence gathered. However, only one had been arrested.
After they finished collecting the evidence, I contacted a mortuary to make arrangements for my in–laws‘ funeral.
As usual, Leo was nowhere to be seen or heard, so I called his close friends and family to inform them of their passing.
But I didn’t inform Kael, who furiously called me when he heard the news, probably from his relatives.
“This is outrageous, Lyra! You’ve not only lied to me but to all our relatives as well! Everyone’s asking me how Leo’s parents
are!
“I can’t believe this is how you’repay us… After everything we’ve done to take care of you! You even lied about their hearts being gouged out? How vicious can you get?!” he thundered.
I waited until Kael finished before replying, “I’m at the bureau. The sheriffs say it’s safer here.
“I’ve also contacted the mortuary, so if you don’t believe me, you don’t have to attend the funeral. I won’t be telling you when
it is.”
After a brief moment of silence, Kael said, “You’re at the bureau, huh? Put the sheriff on the phone!”
Just as I was about to hand the phone over, I heard a sheriff’s voice from next to Kael. “Mr. Kael Ulric, we’re from the Werewolf Enforcement Bureau. We need you to come with us to assist with a case.”
I was still at the bureau when Kael arrived, charging at me the moment he saw me.
“Lyra! Why didn’t you tell me… Why didn’t you tell me this wasn’t an act?! You’re the one who got them killed! You!”
Cold and calm, I replied, “I did tell you and even asked you for a loan. It was Leo who made you choose not to believe me. It
”
was your Alpha who killed his parents, and you’re an accessory to the murder!”
Kael’s face turned deathly pale, his lips quivering as he walked past me.
I turned to him and said, “You would’ve thought it was all an act I made up, no matter how much I tried to explain.
“I’ve recorded all my conversations with the sheriff throughout the incident. Maybe you’d like to listen?”
Kael seemed overwhelmed with grief as he collapsed to his knees.
I turned and walked away as I heard him repeatedly punch the floor, his cries echoing. “I’m so sorry, Victor, Vera… I’m such an idiot! It should’ve been me! I should’ve been the one to have my heart gouged out!”
The female sheriff was still by my side, so I said, “Go ahead and get back to work. I’ll stay here and wait for the mortuary people to arrive.”
The sheriff shook her head, looking apologetic. “I’ll wait with you.”
In the meantime, I called my lawyer.
“I need you to help me prepare a Binding Financial Agreement. I’m going to annul my bond with Leo,” I instructed.
The lawyer sounded a little surprised. “What? That’s so sudden… Do you need this done urgently?”
“Yes, it’s very urgent.”
Even the female sheriff looked at me in shock after I hung up, but I simply smiled.

I was thinking about how everyone knew how deeply in love I was with Leo, yet he had no love for me.
I followed the mortuary staff to ensure all the procedures were in place and that my in–laws were in good hands,
Afterward, I picked up the financial agreement on my way home.
