Chapter 79 The Succession Battle 

Gideon smiled at Nancy’s question. He stared straight at her. “So that’s why you’ve been keeping your distance from me all this time?” 

“More or less.” 

“You’re so silly,” he said softly and ruffled her hair. “Don’t overthink it. To me, friends matter just as much.” 

“Friends?” Nancy thought, lowering her gaze. She was momentarily in a daze. 

“Let’s go home,” Gideon said with a warm voice. 

She offered a quiet hum in agreement. Watching the passing scenery through the car window, her mood gradually settled. Being friends with Gideon could only mean endless possibilities 

for the future. 

There was no longer a need for her to overthink things. 

When they reached home, they took the elevator together to the 15th floor. Gideon glanced at Nancy with a faint smile on his face. His eyes were so dark and bottomless that they seemed 

able to swallow a person whole. 

“Goodnight, Nance.” 

“Goodnight…” Nancy watched him step out before the elevator doors slid shut before her. 

Looking up at the bright lights overhead, Nancy realized that her once unfamiliar apartment complex now somehow felt like home. 

Over the next few days, Nancy threw herself into work. 

Regina and Andrew both repeatedly reached out to her. 

Regina’s messages were all instructions for Nancy to restore the Lidell Group partnership with 

Duran. 

Andrew’s calls were nothing more than polite small talk. 

But their opportunistic tendencies were so obvious that they practically oozed out of the screen. Nancy brushed them off with vague responses. 

She had just wrapped up work for the day when she heard that Martha had arrived. “Show her in.” 

Martha was in a long brown dress. She carried herself with a dignified poise. “Been busy with

“A bit, but I’m used to it,” Nancy replied gently.

“I’ve heard about everything that’s happened. Raine was far too thoughtless,” Martha said with disdain in her eyes. “Your parents are arrogant and short–sighted. They can’t judge 

people to save their lives. It’s only a matter of time before it backfires on them. 

“Nancy, I’m here today because there’s something important I need to tell you.” 

Nancy straightened up. “Go ahead, Grandma.” 

“Nancy, the Lidells are heading for ruin if they keep going the way they are. That’s why I need to choose the next heir as soon as possible,” Martha started. “Come to the Lidell residence tomorrow. I’ll announce my requirements to everyone then.” 

“I understand, Grandma.” 

Martha nodded without further explanation, patting Nancy’s shoulder. Her trust in Nancy was as clear as day. 

Nancy’s expression turned more resolute. 

The Lidell family fortune didn’t mean much to her. But if Martha wanted her to secure the position, then she would do just that. 

After chatting for a while longer, Martha left. 

The next day, Nancy returned to the Lidell residence as promised. But the atmosphere inside was completely different now. 

The second branch of the family was in attendance, too. Wendy looked worn and aged. Her gaze toward Nancy was laced with unadulterated hatred. 

Meanwhile, Irene glanced at Nancy with visible guilt on her face. 

Regina greeted Nancy coolly, “Nancy, you’re here.” 

Nancy only hummed in response. 

“Nancy, I’ve been waiting for you. Come, I have something to say.” Andrew stepped forward with a smile. 

Nancy stared blankly at him. 

Regardless, Andrew began, “You know what Grandma’s about to announce, right? She says it’s an heir selection, but really, it’s just a choice between our side of the family and your uncle’s. 

“As long as someone from our branch gets the position of heir, we’ll be fine. Nancy, are you going to compete?”
