Chapter 39 The Cocky Actress
Nancy’s gaze softened as she said, “Alright.”
By 6:00 pm, she had reserved a table at the priciest barbecue spot in town.
The restaurant was refined, every detail exuding luxury.
She chose a corner booth so that Hillary wouldn’t draw too much attention.
Once the orders were placed, Nancy noticed a woman in sunglasses and a mask approaching her.
Stylish as always, Hillary slid into the seat opposite her, removed her shades, and flashed a playful wink. “Babe, it’s been ages! You’re still drop–dead gorgeous.”
“Keep your voice down,” Nancy warned. “Do you want to get mobbed by fans again like last time?”
Hillary instantly quieted down. “Alright, alright. But you know me too well! You even knew I was craving barbecue!”
“I’ve already ordered a few dishes. See if you want to add anything,” Nancy said, passing her the
menu.
Hillary glanced at the list and grinned. “Babe, I love you even more now! You picked all my
favorites!”
They ate and chatted about everything under the sun.
At one point, Hillary snapped a photo and sent it to their group chat with a caption that read, ” Nancy’s treating me to dinner.”
A second later, Yelena transferred 100 thousand dollars to Nancy.
Yelena texted, “Here, don’t let Hillary eat you into bankruptcy,
Hillary texted, “Yelena!”
Yelena promptly sent another 100 thousand dollars to Hillary.
Feeling vindicated, Hillary accepted the money without hesitation.
“Ever since Natalie left, the group chat’s been so much more relaxed,” Hillary remarked bluntly.
Nancy said nothing
Hillary looked at her. “Nancy, are you still upset about Natalie?”
Nancy sighed softly “Not exactly I was just thinking that maybe I was wrong from the start. I shouldn’t have brought Natalie into our group. Perhaps we were never meant to be friends in the first place”
“Of course But that’s entirely Natalie’s fault You and Yelena are rich heirs, so maybe you didn’t notice it, but I could Natale is an incredibly petty person,” Hillary said, her tone turning serious “That’s because she and I come from the same kind of background. Even though I was adopted by

the Gibsons, I know I don’t truly belong in the same world as Natalie.

“Natalie’s like me in that sense. But instead of working hard to fit in, she used underhanded ways, which is why she strayed so far and even ended up with Winter,” Hillary added.
“Don’t think that way. The Gibsons see you as their own daughter,” Nancy said gently.
Hillary lowered her gaze, and a rare trace of sadness flickered in her eyes.
The truth was, the Gibsons had adopted her because her father and Skylar’s father had once been comrades in the army.
Hillary’s father had taken Skylar’s father on a mission, and neither of them ever returned.
Out of pity for the orphaned girl, Margaret Goodwin, Skylar’s mother, adopted Hillary.
But from a young age, Skylar hadn’t shown her little kindness and had been treating her with cold indifference.
Hillary understood why. His father had died because of hers.
While Margaret had always been good to Hillary, she often seemed a little distant toward her own
son.
Skylar thought Hillary had taken both his father and his mother. It would have been strange if he
didn’t resent her.
“Never mind,” Hillary said. “Let’s just eat.”
During the meal, Hillary took out her phone to check her makeup.
The flash from the screen caught the attention of someone nearby.
Wendy noticed a person holding up a phone, apparently taking a selfie. But she was clearly in the
frame.
Her eyes swept over Hillary, who was dressed in black from head to toe, even wearing a cap. Wendy thought that must be a paparazzi.
Wendy was already irritated after a grueling day of filming, so she lost her temper and shot the person opposite her a look. “Go.”
Nancy hesitated. “Wendy, maybe she’s not taking a picture of you?”
“Are you blind? It’s obvious! Irene, are you even trying?” Wendy snapped.
Reluctantly, Irene stood up and walked over. She tapped Hillary on the shoulder. “Excuse me,
miss Could I take a look at your phone, please?”
“Who are you? Hillary asked with a frown.
Although the brim of her cap hid most of her features, Irene couldn’t shake the feeling that the woman looked familiar. There was an unmistakable refinement about her.
At a nearby table, Nancy’s eyes widened in surprise at the sight of Irene.
She recalled seeing her at a family banquet Quiet as she was, Irene belonged to the second
