“Mr. Fuller, the morning briefing is about to start. Let’s head over,” Corey said. 

Gideon nodded and walked into the conference room. 

Inside, department heads lined up with their updates. 

“Our gaming division has been—” 

“With numbers this bad, what am I even paying you for? Charity?” Gideon cut in. 

“The new architectural blueprint-

“Pay a freelancer a thousand dollars and they’d still do a better job than you.” 

“Our latest publicity plan-” 

“Scrap it and start over!” 

By the end of it, nearly everyone had been dressed down. 

When the meeting was dismissed, Gideon strode out of the conference room, his face a brewing 

storm. 

The others filed out uneasily. 

“What crawled under his skin this morning?” 

“Who knows? Oh great, another long night for us!” 

“He wasn’t wrong, but he’s never been this harsh before.” 

“How dare you grumble about Mr. Fuller?” Corey said coldly. 

Mouths snapped shut. A moment later, they crowded around Corey. “Mr. Lawson, what’s going on? Why is Mr. Fuller in such a bad mood?” 

“Yeah, throw us a bone.” 

Corey sighed. “I have no idea. Stop talking and get back to work.” 

In fact, he wished someone would throw him a bone, too. 

Back at the hotel, Nancy stepped into the lobby, her expression darkening. “Say what you came to say,” she told Miguel. 

“Break up with Gideon,” he uttered, his eyes narrowing. 

Nancy’s eyes widened. “No way,” she shot back without a second thought. 

“No way?” Miguel laughed cruelly. “You’ve had it too easy for too long. Did you forget who you used to be? If I tell Gideon what I know, do you really think he’ll still want you?” 

“Why do you have to be this vile?” Nancy’s hands curled into fists. 

“I just don’t want to lose you.” Miguel tipped her chin upward. “Nancy, let’s go back to what we were. 

“Absolutely not!” Nancy stared at Miguel with cold disgust. “Someone like you doesn’t deserve friends.” 

Miguel didn’t get angry. He only smiled. “Is that so? But I want you to be my friend. This is your last chance, Nancy. Break up with Gideon, or I’ll tell him everything!” 

Nancy stumbled and collapsed onto the couch, staring at him in stunned silence. 

Miguel’s eyes narrowed as he looked down at her. 

Nancy didn’t know how long she sat before whispering, “Miguel, why can’t you just let me go?” 

Miguel chuckled. “I told you, didn’t I? I don’t want to lose you.” 

“You just enjoy pushing me around,” Nancy shot back, her gaze slicing through him. 

“No, Nancy. How could you think of me that way?” he retorted, sounding wounded. 

Nancy closed her eyes. “Give me a few days to think about it.” 

“Of course. Nancy, you know I’ve never said no to you,” Miguel said with a smile, satisfied. “Tell me before your grandma’s surgery.” 

Nancy didn’t answer. Miguel took her silence as assent and left. 

She stayed on the couch all night, not even noticing when her phone died. 

At first light, she went straight to the hospital and buried herself in another round of prep with her surgical team. 

During a break, she finally saw Gideon’s messages. 

Nancy couldn’t help thinking of Miguel’s words, but she had no time to dwell on them. Right now, the only thing that mattered was making Martha’s surgery a success. 

Nancy texted Gideon back. “Grandma’s surgery is coming up. I might be busy these next few days.” 

“I know. I bought you a cake. Make sure you get some rest,” Gideon replied. 

Warmth rose in her chest, but it faded quickly beneath the weight of sorrow. If Gideon ever learned 

her secret, would he look at her with disgust? 

She forced her feelings down and typed, “I got it. Thanks.” 

After replying, she realized she hadn’t logged into the dark web in ages. She opened it and found a stack of unread requests. 

In this world, money could move mountains. People put up bounties for anything, and whoever took the task got paid. Even the rarest things could be found here. 

Nancy had taken on a few tasks before, and her handle carried weight. Requests poured in, but she only accepted those that felt right. 

This time, a familiar plea caught her eye. “Dr. M, I’m begging you. Name your price. I’m Winter Seabourne. Please save my grandpa!”
