“There’s no rush, Grandma. Let’s wait until after your surgery,” Nancy said gently. 

Martha leaned back against her pillow and sighed yet again. “No. The sooner I give them to sooner I’ll have peace of mind.”

Nancy knew how Martha felt. She quietly poured Martha a cup of coffee. 

Just then, Nancy’s phone buzzed with a call. She picked it up, and a choked voice came through the line. “Nancy, where are you right now? Can we talk?” 

The voice sounded like Emma’s. 

“What is it?” Nancy asked flatly. 

“It’s about Wendy. I know you’re close to Hillary. Could you please ask her to let Wendy go just this once? She’s still just a child!” Emma said, breaking down into sobs. “Her life is ruined now!” 

“She ruined herself,” Nancy replied calmly. “I can’t help you, Aunt Emma.” 

Emma’s voice rose with anger. “Nancy, we’re family! How could you be so cold? She’s your cousin! Can’t you do her this one favor? Could you live with yourself if something happened to her?” 

“What happens to her has nothing to do with me.” Nancy scoffed. 

“You’re a psychopath, Nancy!” Emma yelled, loud enough for Martha to hear. 

Martha’s face darkened. She snatched the phone from Nancy’s hand. “Have you lost your mind, Emma? Everything that happened to Wendy was her own fault! How could you take it out on Nancy?” 

There was a stunned silence on the other end before Emma whispered, “Martha?” 

“I’m warning you. If you ever speak to Nancy like that again, I’ll take back every share you hold in the family business!” Martha threatened, then immediately hung up. 

She handed the phone back to Nancy as her eyes softened with concern. “Do they treat you like this often?” 

“Not really. Don’t worry, Grandma. They can’t hurt me,” Nancy said before offering her a warm smile. She looked at Martha warmly before asking, “But… Grandma, don’t you think I’m heartless?” 

“Heartless? You? Are they compassionate, then?” Martha scoffed. “Silly child, you did the right thing. If you show mercy to people like them, you’ll only end up destroying yourself.” 

Nancy’s gaze softened. “You’re right, Grandma.” 

Martha gripped Nancy’s hand tightly. “Nancy, you truly outshine the generation before you. Your courage and strength make it hard to believe you’re even your parents‘ child.”

“I guess I must’ve gotten it from you and Grandpa,” Nancy teased. “I wonder what kind of person Grandpa was. 

“Your grandfather…” Martha trailed off. A bitter smile touched her lips. “He was a man who knew how to wear a mask.” 

Nancy blinked in surprise. “I always thought that you’d chosen someone remarkable.” 

“He was. The Lidells started as nothing more than a small, forgettable factory. With his leadership, we built it into the present Lidell Group. 

“I’m not exaggerating when I say that he was the dream of every young woman in Riversdale back then. He was handsome and capable–the perfect gentleman. I was just as smitten as the rest.‘ 

She sighed. “By chance, he confessed his feelings before I could. We fell in love quickly, but it didn’t last. My parents strongly opposed us. They were convinced that he was only after my family’s power.
