Chapter 175 Matching RingsÂ
A pang of sadness hit Hillary. Silently, she followed Skylar into his car. She looked at the Rolls-Royce in the distance, recalling Skylar’s earlier words.Â
The gap between her and those three was something she could never close, no matter how hard she worked in her lifetime. But even so, both Nancy and Yelena were good to her. She had to work evenÂ
harder.Â
At night, Yelena and Hillary both stayed at Nancy’s place.Â
“You can choose any room here,” Nancy said.Â
“I’ll take this one,” Yelena replied, walking straight to Nancy’s bedroom. Hillary immediately laughed and followed. “I want to sleep here, too.”Â
Nancy sighed, a mix of helplessness and affection in her tone. “Okay, we’ll sleep together.”Â
The three of them slept on the large bed. It was a bit crowded but very warm. They chatted like they were back in their high school dorms, talking about gossip, life, and dreams.Â
Hillary asked, “Lena, has your grandfather decided who’ll be the heir?”Â
Yelena’s gaze was cool and indifferent. “Grandpa’s still strong and healthy. He’ll probably live another ten years. Unless he’s dying, he won’t hand over the position of heir.”Â
“It’s strange. You’re the eldest daughter and so capable. What is he thinking? If I were him, I’d give it to you right away.”Â
Yelena remained calm. “I’m the eldest, but I’m also a woman. He probably hopes my brother will take over the family business. But he’s wrong. As long as I’m here, no one can take that position fromÂ
me.”Â
Her parents had passed away when she was young. She grew up under her grandfather’s rigorous training, enduring what others couldn’t, and took Hawthorne Group to new heights. To her, the Hawthorne family was rightfully hers.Â
She would never let her grandfather, Nelson Hawthrone, give it to someone else.Â
Nancy and Hillary admired her wild determination. “Lena, we support you.”Â
“Only you two ever support me. Everyone else just thinks I’m a greedy person,” Yelena said.Â
Nancy said, “That just means they don’t understand you. Anyone who truly knows you will like you.”Â
Yelena smiled lightly. “True.”Â
The three of them talked for a long time, and as the first light of dawn appeared, they finally fellÂ
By the time Nancy and Hillary woke up the next day, Yelena was already gone. It was obvious that she had gone back to handle business.Â
“I’m going back to the set. We’re making good progress, and it should start airing soon. When it does, I’ll make sure to torture Natalie!” Hillary said with a grin before quickly leaving.Â
Nancy tidied up and was about to head to the company when she opened the door and saw a man in a suit, who was standing there looking at her with a warm smile.Â
“Gideon?” She was surprised.Â
Gideon held up a bag in his hand. “Darling, you haven’t eaten yet, right? Let’s eat in my car.”Â
“Alright.” She smiled.Â
In the car,Â
she suddenly thought of something as she ate her sandwich and narrowed her eyes, looking at Gideon.Â
“Gideon, why did you lie to me, saying you were working, when you went shopping with Winter?”Â
“You saw that?”Â
“Yeah.” She furrowed her brow.Â
He helplessly rubbed her head. “I wanted to surprise you. I happened to run into Winter while buying a gift, and she just followed me around. Why would I have gone shopping with her on purpose?”Â
Nancy understood and felt the anger in her chest dissipate. She then pulled out two rings.Â
He looked at her. “What’s wrong?”Â
“Drop the act. This was in one of the birthday gifts you gave me. Here, one’s for you and the other’s for me.” She lifted his hand.Â
His long, defined fingers looked like something out of a sculpture. She slipped the plain silver ring onto his finger, simple yet strikingly elegant.Â
He took the other ring and put it on her finger.Â
The rings had the engraving of half a heart on each, and when put together, they formed a completeÂ
heart.Â
He said, “This ring is very subtle. Most people wouldn’t notice.”Â
She nodded and felt warmth blossom in her heart. She looked at him with eyes full of tender affection, like sunlight dancing across a lake in autumn.Â
His throat bobbed as his handsome face softened. “Let’s eat, darling.”Â
The Rolls-Royce glided through the busy traffic, while a black car beside it turned off in anotherÂ
direction.Â
In that car, Raine and Fergus were seated in the backseat.Â
Raine asked, “Fergie, do you think this handbag looks nice?”Â
“It’s nice,” Fergus replied after glancing at it.Â
Raine waited for him to go on, certain that if he thought it was nice, he’d buy it for her. But this time, he stayed silent.Â
She frowned, ready to speak, when her eyes caught the bulge in his pocket. In an instant, she realized he must have a gift hidden there for her.Â
Her mood instantly lifted, and she waited expectantly for him to hand it over.Â
