“That man?” Nancy put the pieces together and realized the Rolls-Royce she had seen yesterday really had been Gideon’s. 

“Regina set me up, but the moment I figured it out, I left.” 

As she spoke, she felt a hot rush burn in her chest. 

Gideon had seen it, but he hadn’t asked her then. He’d let it stew instead. 

As the thought crossed her mind, her expression darkened. 

Catching the shift in her demeanor, Gideon tensed. “Darling, I wasn’t accusing you.” 

“Why would you think I’d take it that way?” Nancy asked. 

“I…” Gideon stalled, fingers curling into a fist. 

Her serious, upset gaze made his stomach drop. He shouldn’t have asked the question like 

that. She had only just started to like him, and all he’d done was anger her. 

Gideon deeply regretted questioning her. 

“Darling, I’m sorry,” he said, softening as he reached to brush her hair. “That was my fault. Let me make it up to you. Dinner tonight, anywhere you want.” 

She knocked his hand away. “Why do you keep saying things that don’t answer the question?” 

Gideon’s heart sank. It hit him then that Nancy was really angry. 

The man who commanded hordes of executives without flinching suddenly didn’t know what 

to do. 

“Did I ever say you couldn’t ask me?” Nancy pressed. “If you saw something, why didn’t you ask me on the spot? Why bottle it up and bring it up now?” 

That stopped him cold. 

She continued, “I may not have dated before, but I do know this. If two people keep taking guesses at each other, they only push each other farther away.” 

So, that’s what she meant. 

“You’re right, darling.” Guilt washed over him. “I didn’t think it through.” 

“And that’s not the only thing you haven’t thought through, is it?” she asked, stepping in as

he instinctively backed away. 

“What else are you hiding from me?” 

With his shoulders against the wall, Gideon looked down at her nervously. 

The man who wielded such power and influence was suddenly on edge. 

Did she somehow find out he had liked her all along? 

“Fine,” he said at last. “I admit it. I lied.” 

Her lashes lowered in a flicker of disappointment. “Finally.” 

“I have actually liked you for a long time-”

“You can’t handle spicy food,” Nancy cut in coldly, appearing not to have heard what he said. ” Why didn’t you just tell me? Or is it that you don’t really see me as your girlfriend?” 

Gideon quickly explained, “Of course not. I-” 

“Forget it.” Nancy turned away. “If that’s what this relationship will be like, I’d rather not 

have it.” 

The words landed like a punch to Gideon’s gut. He caught her wrist, his voice rough. “I’m sorry, Nancy. I was wrong.” 

“You keep saying you’re wrong. Do you even know where you went wrong?” she asked. 

For the first time ever, Gideon, who had always been the one dressing others down, stood 

there being dressed down himself. He dropped his gaze, contrite. “I shouldn’t have lied to you.

“And?” Her eyes traced his sharply cut features, and absurdly enough, he looked almost obedient. 

“And…” 

He couldn’t get a word out. The silence dragged between them. 

Nancy’s patience thinned, and a chill slid into her 

eyes. 

Panic fluttered in his chest. “No matter what, it’s my fault.” 

“Maybe we both need to cool off,” she said, pushing past him into the elevator. 

He stepped in after her. “At least let me drive you to the office.” 

Nancy didn’t refuse.

The ride was quiet enough to hear the engine breathe. When they reached Duran, Nancy stepped out without so much as a backward glance. 

Back at the branch office, Gideon looked like a storm incarnate. 

Corey set a cup of coffee on his desk with extreme care.

“Have you ever been in a relationship?” Gideon asked abruptly. 

Corey blinked. “Mr. Fuller, of course.” 

“How do you coax your girlfriend when she’s mad?” Gideon asked. 

Corey could tell at once that Gideon and Nancy had argued. No one else could rattle him like 

she could. 

Corey’s brain shifted into high gear. “Mr. Fuller, when a woman is mad, she does the opposite of her usual. Even the calm ones get stubborn. 

“If she says she doesn’t want something, she probably does. If she says she wants something, maybe she doesn’t. And if she tells you to get lost, stick to her anyway. Don’t let her be by 

herself.” 

Gideon considered it. Oddly, it tracked. Nancy said that she didn’t want to see him, but perhaps what she wanted was for him to show up and make things right. 

“Good. Double the bonus this month for you,” Gideon said with an approving look at Corey. 

Corey lit up at that. 

So, Nancy was the key to a raise. From that moment on, he was determined to treat her with 

even more respect. 

At Duran Corporation, Nancy worked through the day. 

When she finally clocked out and stepped to the curb to hail a cab, a voice drifted over. “Ms. 

Moore.” 

Jasper leaned against his sports car with a bouquet in hand, posing like a walking billboard. Annoyance flickered across Nancy’s face. “I thought I made myself perfectly clear last time.”
