Chapter 85
In the afternoon, Jessica was in the living room, watching a movie and snacking.
Meanwhile, Zachary sat nearby with a laptop in hand, working.
Every now and then, they’d exchange a few words. But most of the time, they quietly focused on their own things.
That evening, Zachary cooked dinner, ate quickly, and left without lingering.
The next morning, Jessica accepted Robert’s invitation. She had slept well the night before and woke up feeling refreshed and in high spirits. She went downstairs in her workout clothes, hoping to grab a bite to eat.
When she opened the fridge, she froze. Inside, every item was neatly arranged in individual containers, each thoughtfully labeled.
Breakfast, meats, condiments…
The handwriting belonged to Zachary. He couldn’t have done this while she napped yesterday, could he?
She pulled out the breakfast box, which had little compartments neatly organized with mini pancakes, breakfast burritos, muffins, and sausage rolls. Everything had been perfectly arranged.
“He’s quietly doing big things,” she muttered with a smile.
She then took out some mini pancakes and set them in the oven.
Her phone rang with a call from Joshua at this moment.
“Mr. Smith, to what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Queen Bee, come out. I’m at your door.”
She hung up in confusion. Shouldn’t Joshua be resting at home right now?
She turned off the oven and hurried out to see Joshua leaning against a white compact car with two dark circles under his eyes. “Princess Lockman, your carriage awaits.”
He bent his back a little, extending his right hand in a polite, gentlemanly gesture. A BMW key dangled from his index finger.
She froze for a moment, circling the car to take it in. “This car…”
“Queen Bee, this will be your ride from now on.” Joshua tossed the keys to her.
She caught them carefully, holding them as if they were fragile. This model must’ve cost over a million dollars!
“I just asked him to lend me a regular car. He-”
“This is already the most basic one he has. And still, he wasn’t satisfied. I spent all night negotiating just to get him to approve this one. Look!” He pointed to the dark circles under his
eyes.
Clearly, he’d been up all night.
“Brand new?”
“Brand new.”
“Rich people really are something else.”
“Lucky you. I have to go back to work overtime,” Joshua muttered.
“Wait. I thought you were off today. Is he that insane? Did he pull you back to work?”
“All because of you,” Joshua said, opening the car door and gesturing for her to get in.
“What does that have to do with me?”
Jessica sat in the driver’s seat while Joshua took the passenger side. She noticed a small bunch of tulips in the cup holder, and a matching tulip perfume hanging from the rearview mirror.
“Last year, Mr. Jones took two days off. This year, he moved all his work ahead so we’d all have to work overtime, just to free up more time to go home for the holidays.”
“So?” She was too busy soaking in the details of the new car to reply. Every little detail had been thought through. There were even tulip stickers on the stereo buttons.
The seat cushions were pink, identical to the ones she used in the office.
“Do you honestly think Mr. Jones enjoys taking time off? A man so obsessed with work suddenly carving out a break? He’s only doing it to be with you.”
Jessica froze. “Joshua, are you out of your mind? Why would he make time just for me?”
“Haven’t you noticed that he likes you?”
“Zachary wears glasses, but he’s not blind.”
“Then what about all this?” Joshua pointed to the perfume, flowers, and pink cushions.
“Didn’t you do all this?” she asked, stunned.
“Queen Bee, do I look like I have nothing better to do?” He wore an expression that said, “I can’t believe this is happening.”
