Jessica inhaled sharply.
“If it’s a pair of heels you haven’t worn in a while, you should soften them with some hot water before putting them on. Otherwise, they’ll scrape against your skin,” Zachary said, frowning as he looked at the tinge of blood forming above Jessica’s ankle.
“You’re knowledgeable about such a thing, too?”
She watched as Zachary massaged her ankle, completely unbothered. A tingling sensation lingered where his thumb pressed, and it felt quite comfortable.
It also made her heart skip.
Jessica couldn’t help but admire his ex–girlfriend. She’d taught him quite well in certain
aspects.
“That was what I did when I wore leather shoes at my workplace in the past. Sometimes, I’d even stick sanitary pads at the soles just so I could run in those shoes.”
Jessica was at a loss for words. She didn’t dare to respond to that. Wasn’t Zachary embarrassed by that at all?
She seldom had the chance to put on heels. She only wore them in the last two years when she started working.
Even so, she spent most of her time with Derrick. She wouldn’t typically wear heels. Even if she did, she couldn’t get used to them.
There were also times when her heels chafed her skin, just like they did today. However,
Derrick would always say, “Don’t wear them next time if they hurt you. You’ll just make yourself suffer. You have me, and that’s enough. There’s no need to try so hard to look good in
front of others.”
At that time, she was so stupid to have assumed that he ached when he saw her in pain or that he had a strong sense of possessiveness toward her.
But now that she thought about it, he was just concerned about his image and pride.
In reality, even if Jessica didn’t dress herself up, he looked like her assistant when they stood next to each other. Other than his somewhat good looks, there didn’t seem to be much about him that she was proud of.
“Wait here,” Zachary said.
“Where are you going?”
Zachary did not answer her. He simply insisted that she wait.
She looked at her foot and wriggled it around. The warmth from his fingers seemed to linger.
She smiled slightly, lifting her head in the direction he had left. However, her eyes unintentionally met with Derrick’s, who was watching her from upstairs.
Her heart skipped a beat. Instantly, her eyes reddened.
Her heart pounded in her chest. Derrick was sitting by the glass window at a restaurant upstairs, having lunch with Celine, who sat across from him.
Did they get back together?
Jessica once thought that she would be able to uproot all her feelings from this relationship cleanly. Nevertheless, she underestimated the weight of this relationship.
Even though she knew that they had separated and that they no longer mattered to her, she still found her chest stuffy the moment she spotted him. It felt suffocating.
Five years of her youth, happiness, and the dependence on him she developed turned into sharp, tenacious swords against her.
She looked away.
Meanwhile, Derrick fixed his eyes on her from upstairs, spacing out.
While sitting across from him, Celine said something to him with a laugh. When she noticed that his attention wasn’t on her at all, she followed his gaze, only to find herself looking at
someone familiar–Jessica.
Celine turned quiet. Derrick was still unable to move on from her.
Jessica’s power was more destructive than she had expected.
Even though she had already cut ties with Derrick and gotten together with Zachary, Jessica’s
place in Derrick’s heart could not be moved.
Celine’s face fell. Nonetheless, she was fully aware of her objective today. So, she did not say anything else.
Meanwhile, Jessica bit her lower lip, holding herself together until Zachary trotted back into
her field of vision.
His neat suit, sharp, chiseled features, and piercing gaze made him radiate with nobility. His entire presence was a stark contrast with the pair of white fluffy slippers in his hand.
Jessica burst into laughter at how adorable this sight was.
He crouched down halfway, replacing her heels with those fluffy slippers.
“Will I embarrass you, being dressed like this?” Jessica asked.
“Your feet will hurt if you’re wearing something that doesn’t fit you,” he remarked, referring to both her shoes and something else.
“My image doesn’t matter,” he added in a neutral tone.
Jessica looked down at him. She couldn’t quite see through him.
He was able to remain out of touch with her for over half a month. But when they met again, he was so attentive, so much so that she didn’t know what to do.
“Zachary,” she uttered.
“Yes?”
He was still massaging her ankles. When he noticed that she hadn’t replied, he looked up at
her.
At the same time, a fresh fragrance had begun to surround him, and a warm sensation spread on his forehead.
Jessica kissed him.
