Chapter 72
“Where are you going?” Robert asked.
He was dressed in a tracksuit, looking as energetic as ever.
“I’m heading to a work dinner,” Jessica said.
She pursed her lips and glanced at her watch as if in a hurry. “I should get going. The tow truck already took my car.”
“Alright.”
Robert flashed a small smile and didn’t say more.
Jessica grabbed a tweed jacket from the passenger seat, picked up her bag, and quickly changed into a pair of white high heels. She gave Robert a small nod before hailing a cab and
leaving.
“Mr. Fulton, that accident must have cost at least a hundred thousand dollars. How could she
just brush it off with such a mild response and walk away?” his assistant said in amazement.
Encounters between wealthy people really did leave others envious.
“Did I spend your money instead of mine?” Robert asked incredulously.
Luckily, Jessica made it just in time. Otherwise, people might have accused her of putting on
airs.
Ever since returning from Sylvaria, she had been careful with everything she did to avoid stirring up any unnecessary trouble.
The private room was deafeningly loud. Everyone had already started drinking.
Jessica looked around. The room was spacious, and nearly everyone from both departments was there. She picked a random seat and sat down.
“What’s that?” Eric asked as he suddenly popped up from nowhere and peeked inside her bag.
“That’s from an old luxury brand, isn’t it, Ms. Lockman? I didn’t expect you to be so wealthy. A single piece like that must cost at least tens of thousands of dollars. Is this a coat? One of those would easily be over a hundred thousand dollars.”
Jessica took a small sip of her cocktail and whispered, “All that glitters is not gold.”
She opened the bag and revealed a tweed jacket she had made for herself.

Eric reached out to take a closer look, but she quickly stopped him. “Mind your manners. Don’t go snooping through a girl’s things. You’ll just bring yourself bad luck.”
“Fine, fine!” Eric said quickly, waving his hands as he backed off without much suspicion. After all, in their eyes, Jessica was just a low–level employee with a fixed salary. There was no way she could afford clothes worth tens of thousands of dollars.
In the first half of the night, everyone took turns toasting Lucas and Evelyn, and Jessica joined in with a couple of drinks.
As the evening went on, the atmosphere grew rowdy, especially with the PR department mingling with the design team. Jessica stayed on the sidelines. Rather than partying hard, she chose to sit with a few colleagues and sing karaoke.
“Ms. Lockman!” the finance manager, Ian Zeller, called out as he walked over and interrupted her singing.
Jessica smiled and set down the microphone. “Hello, Mr. Zeller,” she said politely.
She had come across him a few times before, usually during salary discussions or in passing in
the elevator.
Tonight, he was a little tipsy, and the acne scars on his face made him look closer to 40 years old than to his early 30s.
They chatted for a few minutes before he found a random excuse to add her on Facebook. Jessica didn’t know how to refuse, so she reluctantly agreed.
She glanced at her phone and pressed her lips together. A new friend request appeared under
the name Lucas Carrington.
She lifted her head slightly and spotted Lucas in the crowd. He sat with his elbows on his knees and a glass of wine in his hand. As he took a slow sip while listening to Evelyn beside him, his eyes met Jessica’s.
With a gentleman’s grace, he raised his glass and gave her a small nod before taking another sip. Jessica nodded back and accepted the request.
Lucas looked every bit the steady, composed young heir. He was handsome in his suit, and his easy humor made him the center of attention, surrounded by women.
“Why aren’t you drinking? We don’t have work tomorrow. Come on, loosen up!” Lilian slurred as she pulled Jessica into the seat next to Eric.
“Hey!” Jessica yelped, nearly bumping into him.
Eric steadied her with a smile. “Easy there.”
Jessica forced a small smile at Lilian and murmured, “Hey, pace yourself. This is just a company dinner, not a wild night out. You’ve had enough.”
Then, she discreetly pulled out her phone and texted Lilian’s boyfriend on WhatsApp.
