Chapter 26
Just like that, Jessica wandered the mall with Ginger for about three hours.
Ginger offered, “Have you eaten? Why don’t you come to my house for dinner?”
The two of them sat on a bench, sipping coffee to rest, each holding bags in both hands.
Jessica shook her head. “No need, Ms. Lloyd. I have to hurry back. I have some other matters to attend to.”
She suddenly remembered that Zachary had said that they would eat dinner at home. It was already late. She didn’t know if he would wait for her or if he had already eaten alone.
“Alright then. I’ve got things to do, too. Let’s meet up another time!” Ginger said.
“Sure, Ms. Lloyd.” Jessica wrapped her arm around Ginger affectionately.
The two of them parted in a hurry.
Once she got into her car, Jessica unlocked her phone and saw that “Honey” had called and even sent her messages. “When are you coming back?”
Jessica was startled
and
quickly called him. “Sorry, I ran into an old acquaintance at the mall
5 “It’s fine. When will you be back?”
replied, “I’m only my way now. I’ll be home in about ten minutes.”
‘I’ll wait for you,” Zachary answered.
“Okay,” Jessica replied.
Suddenly, she had someone waiting for her at home. She thought it felt strange, yet she couldn’t deny the certain appeal of being urged to hurry home.
She didn’t know why, but her ears started to warm up. Then, she started the car and drove back.
On her way back, she passed by some street vendors. She couldn’t resist pulling over and buying a bouquet of tulips.
After she parked her car in the garage, she stepped out holding the flowers, and her face lit up
with a smile.
“You’re back.” Zachary’s voice suddenly rang out.
Jessica jumped in fright and instinctively took a step back.
Awkwardness lingered in the air as Jessica quickly composed herself. She closed the door and walked toward him, asking, “What are you doing here?”
“I was waiting for you,” Zachary said, his gaze falling on the tulips in her arms.
Jessica felt a little anxious, unsure of how to continue the conversation. “Flowers. They’re for you.”
Her ears were burning hot as she carefully held out the bouquet for him, unsure if he would accept it.
Zachary looked at Jessica, then at the flowers. After that, he slowly reached out to take them. When his palm brushed against her fingers, a surge of electricity seemed to shoot through them both.
“Thank you.” His face carried a faint trace of joy. It was so subtle that it could have unnoticed if one wasn’t paying attention.
gone
Jessica pursed her lips. Why had she done something so silly? Why did she give him flowers? What on earth had she been thinking? She quickly pulled her hand back, rather reluctantly.
Just as the moment was about to turn awkward, Zachary stepped closer and suddenly pulled Jessica into his arms.
The hand holding the bouquet wrapped around her waist, while his other arm embraced her
shoulders.
Jessica was startled, and her hands hovered in midair with nowhere to rest. Her body stiffened as the overwhelming scent of sandalwood enveloped her.
He was so warm that she could feel the heat radiating from his chest even through the thin
fabric of his shirt.
Jessica didn’t even dare to breathe deeply. Her heart was pounding wildly, as if her whole body were being shocked by electricity. She wondered if she should hug him back.
She felt conflicted as sweat started to form on her forehead.
The embrace was still very gentlemanly. Zachary’s body wasn’t pressed too close to hers, but it was more than enough to make her heart go wild.
She swallowed hard and finally wrapped her hands around his back timidly.
After a long while, the two of them slowly let go. Jessica averted her eyes in panic, unsure of where to look. Meanwhile, Zachary’s gaze was fixed on her, calm as ever.
“Have you eaten?” Jessica suddenly remembered.
“No. I was waiting for you,” Zachary replied.
Well, this was awkward.
“I’m sorry, I forgot.” She genuinely had forgotten. She forgot that she wasn’t alone anymore
and that she was married.
“It’s fine. You’ll get used to it,” Zachary said.
“Okay.” After that, Jessica returned to her car to retrieve the clothes she had bought that day from the trunk.
Zachary said nothing. He handed the flowers back to her, then took the shopping bags from her hands and walked inside the house.
