Chapter 22

Hazel texted, “Your husband looks handsome. Does he treat you well?”

Jessica wrote back, “He treats me pretty well.”

They chatted idly back and forth, and at some point, Jessica drifted off to sleep.

Even when Zachary knocked on the door late at night, Jessica didn’t stir.

He stood by the bed and glanced at the messages Jessica had exchanged with Hazel. With a smile on his face, he set the phone aside and gently pulled the blanket over her.

After washing up, he didn’t lie down; instead, he went back to the study to work.

After some time, Jessica was woken up by the sound of Zachary’s typing.

She groggily opened her eyes to see the study light still on. At the same time, she felt the urge to use the bathroom, so she slowly got up.

To reach the bathroom, she had to pass through the walk-in closet and the study. As she passed the study, she saw Zachary frowning over some documents.

He was dressed in a gray loungewear set, the top two buttons undone, revealing a faint glimpse of his collarbone. Through his glasses, his gaze landed on the sleepy Jessica. He asked, “Did I wake you?”

She shook her head. “Why aren’t you sleeping yet?”

Zachary replied, “I still have some files to review.”

“I see, 11

Jessica answered softly and continued to make her way to the bathroom. When she returned, Zachary was just turning off the computer.

She fell silent for a moment, unsure if she should speak. Tensing up, Jessica suddenly felt fully

awake.

She quickly lay down, buried her head, and pretended to be asleep.

A few minutes later, the mattress sank beside her, and a warm body lay down next to her.

She didn’t dare to open her eyes, knowing it was him. Somehow, she had forgotten that they were already husband and wife.

Her heart thumped wildly, and her fingers curled into a tight fist.

“Good night,” Zachary said.

Jessica remained silent. She figured that it was better to keep pretending to be asleep.

The next morning, Zachary woke Jessica up. “Have some breakfast, then you can go back to sleep.”

He seemed to be in a good mood, the faint smile on his face softening his usual frosty demeanor.

Jessica rubbed her eyes and checked her phone. She wondered how he could be so energetic. He slept late last night, and it was only 7:30 am…

He stood by the walk-in closet and changed into a shirt right in front of her without showing any hint of reservation.

Jessica quickly pulled the blanket over her eyes to hide the sneaky glance she was casting at

him.

“Are you coming with me to the office?” Zachary asked as he buttoned his shirt and walked

over.

“No, I…” She was about to say she would drive herself, but then remembered that her car was still parked at her old place.

“Joshua drove your car back last night. It’s in the garage, and the keys are on the nightstand,”

he said.

“Okay,” Jessica replied, still covering her eyes and not daring to look.

Only when Zachary left and shut the door did she slowly lower the blanket.

“So, Queen Bee, how does it feel like being pursued by the CEO?” Joshua messaged first thing in the morning.

“Pursued? So you’re giving me your blessing?” Jessica replied.

In truth, there was no pursuit. Everything had started in bed.

Jessica chuckled helplessly. She couldn’t believe what a blur it had all been, marrying just like that. She had even mistaken malnutrition for pregnancy and made a huge fuss over nothing.

The housekeeper, Mary Lane, had prepared a well-balanced breakfast, which was something Jessica had never experienced before. It was thoroughly satisfying. “Mrs. Jones, Mr. Jones asked me to bring you this.”

Just yesterday, she was still “Ms. Lockman”, but that day, Mary immediately changed how she addressed her, catching Jessica off guard.

She looked at the dainty thermos in Mary’s hands.

“There’s warm milk inside. The thermos will maintain the temperature. Mr. Jones said you

must take it with you and drink it whenever you’re thirsty.” Mary handed the thermos over.

Jessica wondered if Zachary was really that shy. Couldn’t he have just said it himself?

“Alright.” Jessica slung her bag over her shoulder, took the thermos, and headed toward the

garage.
