Chapter 21
Jessica had casually mentioned that getting their marriage registered, looking as they did, would seem careless, so Zachary brought her to a private atelier after the meal. She had her makeup done and changed into some suitable attire.
That was just so typically straight-laced of him.
Two hours later, they finally headed to city hall. Only when they arrived did she discover that she still had to change, this time into a white shirt to match his.
This was her first time getting married, after all. She had absolutely no experience.
But at least the marriage certificate was now in hand, and Jessica could officially consider
herself a married woman.
Sitting in the car on the way back, she stared at the certificate in her hand, a strange mix of
emotions welling up inside her.
Jessica had imagined countless times what it would be like to marry Derrick, only to realize that she had chosen the wrong man.
She had never thought that she would marry in such a hasty way, let alone marry such a wealthy CEO.
She didn’t know whether happiness awaited her in the future, but at least for now, she felt happy and content.
“Jessica, will you regret this?” she quietly asked herself.
Jessica didn’t know the answer to that. But what stood out to her was that after they slept together, Zachary kept asking if she wanted to be Mrs. Jones, his eyes full of sincerity.
He had even broken down her apartment door twice for her sake. It almost felt like destiny. It felt as if fate had tied them together. So, she figured that she probably wouldn’t regret it.
At some point, Jessica dozed off, her head falling against his shoulder without her even realizing it.
“We’re home.” Zachary lowered his gaze, studying her delicate looks.
She had makeup on that day, so her fair skin glowed with a rosy tint. Her long lashes fluttered slightly as she stirred awake.
“Sorry.” Jessica quickly brushed away the powder she had left on his shoulder.
Zachary looked at how adorably she was acting and couldn’t resist the smile tugging at his lips.
“You must be really tired.” He shifted slightly.
“I’m not,” Jessica said.
When Zachary and Jessica returned home, it wasn’t mealtime yet. Jessica awkwardly took a seat and fiddled with her fingers.
“I have a dinner engagement tonight. Don’t wait on me for dinner,” Zachary said.
“Alright.” She nodded.
Then, Zachary left with Joshua.
Jessica let out a sigh of relief.
“Exciting!” She flopped onto the couch, squeezed her eyes shut, and forced out that one word.
After a few minutes of rest, she headed upstairs into what was now their shared domain. Then, she began unpacking the luggage they had moved in the night before.
She didn’t have many belongings, having only been back from abroad for a year. She had brought only the essentials, so it didn’t take her long to finish the task.
Jessica wandered into the study and looked around. On the left was a wall of books with a tea table; on the right was his desk, and in the center stood an empty table with a few books on it.
She thought for a moment and took her phone out to call Zachary, only to notice that she had received a friend request notification.
It was from Zachary. “How insufferable,” she thought.
Jessica smiled as she accepted the friend request.
She texted, “Hello, Mr. Jones. Please take care of me from here on.”
Then came his reply. It read, “Hello, Ms. Lockman. From here on out, I’ll follow your lead.”
She wondered if this was his attempt at sweet-talking. When did he learn how to do that?
In truth, Zachary hadn’t known how to reply either, so he had asked Joshua. The latter was the one who had taught him everything.
Jessica sent a photo of the table. “Can I use this table?”
“You can handle the household affairs.” Zachary wrote back.
Jessica couldn’t stop her lips from curling up into a playful smile.
That night, after getting dinner and washing up, she lay in bed and messaged her mother.
Her mother, Hazel Lockman, was once a great beauty in her youth and was now living overseas. At this hour, she should already be up.
Jessica sent a photo of her marriage certificate. “Ms. Lockman, I got married.”
Hazel messaged back. “It’s so early. I haven’t even woken up yet, and you gave me a shock.” “Haha…” Jessica rolled around on the bed, and her face flushed for no reason.
