Chapter 14
Jessica couldn’t just walk away from the mess she herself had caused. If Zachary decided to make things difficult for her at the company, then it would cause her far more damage.
“I’ll listen to you…” Jessica, ever so fearless, actually started trembling.
“You’ll listen to me?” Zachary couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Was the arrogant Jessica actually compromising?
“Yes, I’ll listen to you,” Jessica said.
“Then come with me.” Zachary stared at her sharply.
Jessica forced herself to smile. She was about to agree, but she still couldn’t help but ask, ‘ Isn’t there any other way?”

“You could just choose not to say anything. You can just get into your car and leave.” Zachary turned around slightly, not looking at her.
“If I leave, won’t you be scolded to death?” Jessica’s gaze met his dark, oppressive stare.
“That has nothing to do with you.” Zachary clenched his jaw tightly.
Jessica swallowed nervously. His penetrating gaze made her shrink back. She meekly said, ” I’m really sorry…”
Zachary let out an almost imperceptible sigh. He turned and escorted Richard into the car. Then, he drove into the estate without sparing her another gaze.
Jessica froze on the spot, clenching her fists together.
“You brat, did you make her angry?” Richard grumbled in the passenger seat. He continued, ” After all this time, you’ve finally brought me such a beautiful granddaughter -in-law. Can’t you sweet-talk her a little? Is your mouth useless?”
Zachary stayed silent the whole time. He merely maintained a dark expression as he allowed Richard to continue berating him.
Richard said, “Look at you. You’re already this old, yet you’re still holding onto that foolish ex -girlfriend of yours. Did she ever look back at you? When will you get rid of that stubborn temper of yours?”
“Grandpa, I don’t like her,” Zachary suddenly said, looking a little unfocused.
Richard scoffed. “Do you think I’m blind? If you don’t like her, why did you chat with her for so long? If you don’t like her, why did she make you a shirt? Aren’t you a clean freak? How did that expensive jacket of yours end up on her? Why don’t you put it on me instead?”
The car rolled into the parking lot. Zachary had thought that Jessica would run off, but she had actually followed them inside.
Their eyes met in silence. When he saw this, Richard quickly slipped away.
Zachary’s heavy gaze landed on Jessica again. Behind his rimless glasses, a brief glint appeared in his eyes, but it quickly dimmed.
Who could imagine that underneath that well-dressed, refined gentleman was such a cold person?
“Do you understand the consequences of coming in?” Zachary hadn’t moved closer, but even by the car, Jessica could feel the pressure weighing down on her.
She shook her head, taking two steps back as her back pressed against the door.
Zachary said, “If you follow me in, there’s no leaving. We’ll be sharing a bed tonight, and tomorrow, we’ll be getting married.”
Jessica forced herself to stay calm. “Well, since I’m already here…”
She trailed off.
Zachary studied her for several seconds, and his gaze darkened even further. He nodded slowly. “Now that you’re here, are you ready to consider becoming Mrs. Jones?”
“I can play the part for today. At least then, you won’t have such a hard time.” Jessica didn’t
dare to meet his
gaze.
“So I’m supposed to thank you for that?” Zachary looked frustrated beyond words.
He felt like he was being strung along by her, but there was nothing he could do about it. Jessica, if you’re not sure, I suggest you leave. I won’t force you, and I won’t play games.”
His tone was calm, but his words were razor-sharp.
Jessica only meant well. Seeing him being ungrateful caused her to clench her car keys tightly. “Sorry to trouble you.”
She then immediately got into the car and sped out of the estate.
Zachary stood there, watching the car drive away without a change in his expression.
“I hope you get scolded to death tonight!” Jessica gripped her steering wheel tightly, fuming.
She pulled over to the side of the road, feeling guilt welling up inside her. After all, this was a mess she had caused. She sighed, picked up her phone, and sent a message to Richard. “I’m sorry, Mr. Jones Senior, something urgent came up. I’ll visit another day. You can just hand the clothes to Zachary.”
Then, she sent the payment to Richard.
To her surprise, the transfer was rejected. “There’s no need to be so polite. Zachary already told me that you had to leave early. You can just visit me with him next time! I won’t take the money for the clothes. I would have made them for him eventually anyway.”
Jessica was surprised when she read the text. She wondered if Zachary had actually claimed that she and he were an item in front of his family.
Jessica rubbed her forehead as the memory of Zachary asking her if she would like to be “Mrs. Jones” replayed in her mind.
She chuckled. Did anyone really believe that losing one’s virginity meant that they would be tied down forever in this day and age? It was truly a rare sight, especially since Zachary came from a powerful family like this one.
She opened her message history with Zachary, intending to transfer the money for the shirt to him. Yet, when she tried to message him, a red exclamation mark appeared.
She couldn’t believe it-he had blocked her…
She almost exploded from rage. She thought that Zachary was such an old-fashioned, straight -laced man. She tapped on the screen angrily, deleting his contact right away, before locking her phone.
She irritably accepted this outcome, thinking that this vague relationship could end here.
She bit her lip as she drove downtown. After a quick meal, she returned to her rental
apartment.
The living room was piled with packed luggage. She hadn’t found a suitable place to move into yet, and the sight of them irritated her.
Early the next morning, Jessica carried a gift bag while looking down at her phone. She followed the crowd into the elevator.
The moment she stepped in, she caught a whiff of a familiar scent. She knew exactly whose it
and just as she had expected, she saw Joshua standing beside Zachary.
was,
She didn’t dare look and just retreated to a corner far away. Yet, she could still feel that sharp gaze boring into her.
More people crowded in, and the elevator was packed tight. It began to fill with all sorts of strange smells.
Covering her mouth, Jessica turned toward the wall and dry-heaved a few times. When the
elevator finally opened and the crowd thinned, she gradually recovered.
“Jess, what’s wrong? You haven’t had much of an appetite these days.” Lilian, arriving late, approached her with a concerned look on her face.
“I’ve been busy house-hunting. I’ve looked at several places, but none of them feel right.” Jessica set the gift bag down.
“Hey, now that you’re single again, would you like me to introduce you to some guys?” Lilian teased, her smile playful.
Jessica frowned at her. “If I wanted a boyfriend, would I even need an introduction? Suitors could line up for miles.”
“That’s true. Our future famous fashion designer would never be short on men,” Lilian said.
“What? Is Ms. Lockman looking to date?” By sheer coincidence, Eric happened to walk by and
hear them.
three of them exchanged awkward smiles.
