Chapter 12
Jessica didn’t know how much time had passed when she was suddenly awakened by stomach
pain.
By then, it was already evening. She couldn’t believe that she had actually slept for that long. She fumbled for the light switch, but she could barely move. That was how bad her stomach
pain was.
Since she only returned from abroad over a year ago, she didn’t have that
she didn’t have that many friends. The
only people she really talked to were Lilian and Joshua.
Lilian didn’t pick up her call, so Jessica called Joshua instead. Joshua was still on vacation, but fortunately, he answered, “What is it this time, Queen Bee?”
“Joshua…” Her body was drenched in sweat, and she was too weak to even move.
He immediately caught on to how different she sounded and hurriedly asked, “Are you feeling unwell? Where are you? Can you move?”
Jessica couldn’t respond to his barrage of questions. All she did was say, “Come get me at my place…”
Her head spun, and she was barely conscious.
Within ten minutes, she heard pounding on the door. Then, the door fell open with a bang.
“Jessica!” She heard a familiar voice beside her.
“Unbelievable!” The tone sounded angry, but beneath it was concern.
Strong arms lifted her frail body, and once again, she caught the faint, pleasant scent of sandalwood. When she woke up, she found herself lying in a private hospital ward.
“You’re awake.” It was that familiar voice again.
Jessica turned her head slowly and saw a face that could make thousands of fangirls scream.
As usual, Zachary wore a black suit with a black tie. He stood towering over her with the same look he’d had that night.
Jessica couldn’t believe that she was thinking about that night at that moment.
“Mr. Jones, what are you doing here?” Her cheeks flushed.
“Joshua is on leave.” Zachary stood with his hands in his pockets, looking straight at her without saying much.
“Thank you.” Jessica let out a sigh. It was him again. He was like a shadow she just couldn’t
shake.
Was fate trying to forcibly tie them together? It was so relentless.
“Does it still hurt?” Zachary asked.
“No.” She shook her head.
“Is junk food that good?” Zachary asked.
Jessica didn’t know how to respond. She figured that he must have seen her half-eaten food in
the kitchen.
“Where was your boyfriend?” He looked at her, searching for the truth.
“He died yesterday.” She didn’t want him lecturing her again. Things were bad enough without him rubbing salt in her wounds.
Zachary pursed his lips together and nodded. “That’s good news at least.”
At that moment, the doctor entered the ward. “Zachary, here’s the stomach medicine. Make sure she takes it on time. If nothing else goes wrong, she can be discharged tomorrow. You
need to take better care of her!”
The middle-aged doctor spoke to Zachary with a familiarity that made it clear they were close.
“Got it, Aunt Lucy.” Zachary took the medicine.
Aunt…
Jessica froze. She seemed to have found herself in another misunderstanding that was waiting to happen.
They chatted by the door for several minutes before the doctor finally left.
“Can I leave tonight?” Jessica asked, wanting to escape her situation.
Zachary set the medicine on her nightstand and sat beside her. “No.”
Jessica noticed a faint redness on his left cheek and awkwardly rubbed her hands together. Suddenly, she remembered the slap she had given him that night.
But he didn’t seem to feel uncomfortable with the situation at all. He kept receiving calls, but he refused to leave.
“Mr. Jones, the food you ordered is here,” a young woman announced as she entered the hospital ward.
That was when Zachary finally moved away from the bed.
The woman unfolded a small table over Jessica’s bed and laid out the dishes.

Jessica stared at the food. It was from The Mansion, a luxurious fine-dining restaurant.
Zachary picked up some cutlery and handed them to her. “Eat, I bought this for you. I’ll give you an idiot discount, so remember to pay me back.”
She glanced at the elegant cutlery in front of her before looking at his hand. Then, she took the cutlery and started to eat her first proper meal since yesterday.
So, he was just calling her an idiot to her face.
Jessica gave in to that accusation. After all, starving herself over that wretched Derrick was indeed a foolish thing to do.
Zachary asked, “Do you have any friends who can stay with you tonight?”
She answered, “Don’t worry. I won’t die. I don’t need anyone around.”
“Alright. Well, I still have some things to do. The one at the door is Susan White. You can ask her if you need anything, or just message me directly,” he said.
Then, he looked at the time. Just as he was about to leave, he suddenly thought of something and turned back. “Didn’t your boyfriend just die? Well then, have you thought about the question I asked
you last time?”
Jessica nearly choked on her food. “Zachary, for heaven’s sake, I really don’t want to be in a relationship.” She lost her appetite altogether.
Ever since Zachary found out about Derrick, he had been staying close to her. She couldn’t shake the feeling that he had a plan in mind.
“Alright. I won’t ask again.” Zachary’s expression remained neutral as he left.
Watching Zachary leave, Jessica felt a pang of guilt over her response. After all, Zachary was the one who brought her to the hospital.
In Titan Bar, Zachary swirled his drink and sipped it slowly.
His cousin, Jason Fandhorn, was right beside him. “This is the first time I’ve ever heard of a woman rejecting you outright. That’s wild! It’s no wonder you like her.”
“That doesn’t mean I like her,” Zachary said uneasily.
“If that’s not liking her, then what is it?” Jason tilted his head.
“You mention her every time we meet, yet you still deny having feelings for her? Look at your neck. Are those hickeys still there?” Jason snickered, shaking his head.
Zachary rubbed his forehead. Lately, he really had been thinking of Jessica all the time. Even without speaking to her, just seeing her lifted his mood.
He then received a message from Jessica. It read, “Sorry, Mr. Jones.”
“It’s fine.” He replied to her instantly.
“Thank you, Mr. Jones.”
“It’s fine.”
“I transferred the money for dinner to you,” Jessica messaged again.
Zachary paused and took a sip of his drink. Then, he refunded the money and texted, “Just treat me next time.”
He noticed the typing indicator from Jessica, but no reply followed.
Zachary frowned slightly, and there was a lazy glint in his eyes.
“Jason’s right. If you don’t like her, then why did you go to her rescue? Wouldn’t it have been easier to call an ambulance?” Mickey Lynch, who had been beside Zachary, tapped his glass.
Zachary didn’t answer. His mind was filled with the image of Jessica’s clear, bright eyes. He thought that they looked ever so pure.
The next day, Zachary handled Jessica’s discharge from the hospital and drove her home.
“You’re moving?” Zachary glanced at the cluttered place.
“I am.” Jessica’s eyes fell on the door that had been removed from its hinges.
“This place is fine. Why move?” Zachary asked. He wandered around and spotted his familiar coat draped over the couch.
“My ex-boyfriend ‘died’, and I’m afraid he’ll come back and haunt me,” Jessica replied.
She had no idea how to chase him out. Zachary had casually taken a seat, showing no sign of leaving.
“Did you
take the door off?” she asked.
“I did.” Zachary nodded.
Jessica groaned. “A new door costs a hundred times more than hiring a locksmith. Did yourself on the head?”

Seeing how few belongings she had, she let out a deeper sigh. Moving wasn’t simple, and finding a decent place was even harder.
“All I could think about was that you were going to die.” Zachary crossed his legs. Then, he
asked, “When is your lease up?”
After dealing with Derrick, Jessica was now numb to the audacious people. So, what Zachary said only made her feel a bit sick. Nevertheless, she replied, “Before Wednesday.”
Derrick was clingy. Jessica knew that if she didn’t move, he would keep coming back, engaged
or not.
“Since the door is already off, why don’t you just move tonight?” Zachary suggested.
“And where would I go?” She pulled out a bottle of water from the fridge and tossed it to him. Zachary caugh it neatly and casually said, “Move into my apartment.”
