Rowan’s face was unreadable, and that only made Evelyn more annoyed.
She believed she had to refuse all gifts. No exceptions, not even one.
“When Mr. Blair leaves the hospital, I’ll give this back. And don’t even think about stopping me. Evelyn warned him firmly.
Rowan grew anxious right away. “Girl, do you even know who that medal belongs to? With this, you’ll have so many chances later. You might even get into Brookhaven Hospital in Kingstead one day. Doors will open for you.”
Really? Is it that amazing?
But Myrtle said last night he was only a retired soldier.
“Dr. Cook, you’re trying to prank me again, aren’t you? Doesn’t matter. I’m returning it no matter what, Evelyn said, eyeing him suspiciously.
Before Rowan could argue more, Rex walked over.
Rowan waved her off. “I’ll talk to you later. For now, get back to work. And keep that medal safe -don’t lose it.”
Of course, I’ll keep it safe. How else could I return it?
Muttering in her head, Evelyn walked toward the wards.
Since Rowan wasn’t upset, she didn’t want to bother Myrtle anymore.
Nurses worked long shifts, and rest was important. Evelyn wanted Myrtle to get proper sleep so she’d have energy later.
Right at the ward entrance, Evelyn ran into Myrtle, who had red, watery eyes.
“What’s wrong? Evelyn asked quickly, worried.
Myrtle smiffled, her voice shaky. “The patient in Ward 205–the one admitted yesterday–L went to check on him and finish his discharge papers, but he wouldn’t let me. He says he wants to stay longer I’ve tried everything, but he refused. He’s crossing the line!”
Ward 205. That’s Quade’s ward
Evelyn patted her shoulder gently. “It’s fine. Go get some rest. Everything’s handled on Dr. Cook’s side. I’ll take care of the rounds, and I’ll make it right for you, too.”
“Be careful. That patient isn’t easy to deal with, Myrtle warned

If she knew that “difficult patient” was actually Evelyn’s friend, she’d probably break down crying on the spot.
Evelyn didn’t explain. She just watched Myrtle leave, then walked into Ward 205.
Just like yesterday, Quade was on the bed stuffing food into his mouth, cheeks puffed up like a
hamster.
When he heard the door open, he mumbled, “I already told you, I’m not leaving yet. I’ve still got things to do.”
“If you keep stalling, are you planning to run 50 laps under the moon tonight?” Evelyn asked, smiling, but her smile wasn’t friendly.
Quade panicked and choked on his food, his face turning red.
“Evelyn, finally! Stay here–I’ll go get my boss.”
Before she could react, Quade jumped down barefoot and dashed across the floor, shouting, “Boss, Boss,” at the top of his lungs.
Evelyn grabbed him back furiously. “This is a hospital! No yelling! And barefoot? Do you want to catch a cold? Put your shoes on.”
Her stern look made Quade feel like he was facing a female version of Philip.
Looking pitiful but obedient, Quade sat back on the bed and slipped on his shoes.
Philip entered at that moment.
Quade brightened instantly. “Evelyn, I’m not trying to drag this out. I just wanted my boss to see you again before leaving. That’s all. Don’t be mad. I’ll do my own discharge papers.”
But right as he reached the door, he peeked back. “Oh, and about that nurse I made cry earlier -please tell her I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it. As an apology, I’ve got half a pack of Fig Newtons in my drawer. Give them to her, okay?”
This guy never stops, huh?
Evelyn sighed and shook her head, then looked at Philip.
Since Quade was being discharged, Philip, as his caretaker, had to leave with him.
She had no idea when they’d meet again.
Quade couldn’t pretend to be sick too often. People might kick him out.
“By the end of next month, at the new recruits‘ training competition, I’ll win that basin back for you,” Philip said.

Evelyn blinked, confused. “Basin? What basin?”
Then it hit her. “Oh! Right. My foot basin’s about to break anyway. I’ll wait for you.”
Philip froze.
This girl really thinks of my gift as a foot basin.
His helpless expression made Evelyn burst out laughing.
“I’m joking. If you win it, I’ll treat it as a treasure, alright?”
“Alright,” Philip nodded slightly. Then he asked, “And you? Do you have anything you want to say to me?”
Of course she did.
Her heart overflowed with words, but none came out.
Her face flushed, and in the end she only whispered, “Safe travels.”
Seeing the faint disappointment in his eyes, she suddenly remembered the charm she had prepared.
She quickly pulled it out and handed it to him. “Wear this. It’ll keep you safe.”
She’d nearly wrapped it up last time at Rachel’s place.
Rachel told her to give them away fast so they wouldn’t get dirty.
But Evelyn had refused. Some things weren’t ready yet.
Later at home, she stayed up late and embroidered Philip’s family name on the charm. Then she went to the most famous church in Southville and had it blessed.
She had never believed in charms before.
But after living a second life, she believed.
This world had karma–good and bad always returned.
She had even knelt in the church and prayed to God. If He kept Philip safe this time, unlike before, she’d give up 20 years of her life without complaint.
She prayed He would heard her.
Coming back to the moment, Evelyn looked up at Philip with a soft smile. “It’s not very pretty, but you have to wear it, like your faith. It’ll keep you safe. Always keep it close.”

“Then tell me,” Philip asked quietly, “how do I keep you close all the time?”
What kind of question is that?
Evelyn didn’t understand. “Keep me close? I’m not your faith.”
“You are.” Philip said simply.

In this life, in this world, the only faith in his heart was the woman standing right in front of
him.
A soft breeze drifted through the window, brushing Evelyn’s hair and stirring the thoughts in
her chest.
