Chapter 95 Taken All the Blame Onto Himself
Evelyn was a little surprised.
She had no idea Philip knew how to cook.

But when she thought about it, it made sense. In her past life, she and Philip hadn’t been very close. Even now, they didn’t see each other much. So, of course, there were still many things. she didn’t know about him.
Anyway, there was plenty of time later to figure him out. No need to rush.
They sat together on a long bench in the hospital hallway and started eating the noodles.
It was just simple chicken noodle soup with a little bit of salt, but to Evelyn, it tasted amazing.
By the time she finished, she could feel her strength slowly returning.
“Your mentor treats you well. Since he protects you, I don’t have to worry so much while I’m away in the military,” Philip suddenly said.
Evelyn turned to him with a small smile. “You heard him scolding me earlier?”
“Yeah. He’s just worried about you.”
Of course—if even Philip saw it, how could Evelyn not notice?
“Honestly, it’s fair that he was angry. Dr. Cook is really strict about his work. If he’s not 100% sure, he never takes action. I was too reckless, and that upset him. But deep down, he was mostly worried I’d get criticized by the others.”
“If you understand that, then it proves he was right to take you as his apprentice.”
The two of them kept talking softly. They didn’t realize that around the corner, an older man with graying hair had quietly turned away, his eyes a little teary.
By the time the surgery ended, it was past midnight. Between eating noodles and chatting, dawn was already starting to break.
Evelyn didn’t
go to rest. Instead, she washed her face with cold water to wake up, changed into her white coat, and went to Rowan’s office.
Because of the morning meeting, everyone had arrived early. They stood in small groups, whispering outside,
When they saw Evelyn, their expressions changed–some curious, some complicated.
Myrtle, the nurse, hadn’t been inside the OR last night, but since she’d helped with the pre- surgery checks, she was also called in.

She looped her arm through Evelyn’s and whispered, “Evelyn, I heard about last night—you saved that patient all on your own. You’re amazing.”
Evelyn smiled gently, not sure how to reply.
If she admitted it, she’d sound arrogant in front of the senior doctors.
If she denied it, it would look like she was pretending it was luck, which could cause even more gossip.
She was stuck. Luckily, just then, Rowan arrived at the office door, and everyone immediately looked at him.
“Come in,” Rowan said.
In seconds, the office was packed full.
Rowan stood behind his desk and quickly went over last night’s surgery. Then he said, “The patient is recovering well and has been moved out of the ICU. Everyone did their part. I’ll request a bonus from Dr. Mayer.”
The staff immediately buzzed, guessing how big the bonus might be.
But a few ignored the bonus and looked at Evelyn instead. “The bonus doesn’t matter. What matters is that the patient was critical last night. Dr. Cook, you not only brought an intern into the OR, but you also let her perform a procedure? If something had gone wrong, forget the bonus–our reputations and even our jobs would’ve been at risk.”
At that moment, Evelyn fully understood why Rowan had scolded her so harshly last night.
He hadn’t exaggerated.
Workplaces were never truly peaceful. There would always be voices of doubt,
“What’s this? Are you questioning my apprentice’s ability, or my judgment?” Rowan cut in before Evelyn could say anything.
His sharp glare told her to stay quiet.
Evelyn pressed her lips together and didn’t speak.
Rowan faced the doctor directly. “She did it because I told her to. I’ve been in this field for decades–I know my limits. If you think my choice last night was wrong, go complain to Dr. Mayer. I’ll be waiting.”
“Dr. Cook, isn’t that basically a threat? You outrank me. If I report you, won’t you retaliate later?” the doctor shot back
“I’m not interested in you like that,” Rowan’s eyes narrowed, his voice booming. “Bottom line:

Evelyn only acted because I ordered her to. She’s an intern and my apprentice. She has no right to refuse me. If she had, that would’ve been defiance. I take all responsibility. If anyone has an issue, bring it to me.”
Rowan had taken all the blame onto himself.
Evelyn’s chest ached with emotion. Last night, he had scolded her fiercely, even poked her forehead. But now, he stood tall and shielded her in front of everyone.
The opposing doctor had no comeback.
Another doctor quickly tried to ease the tension. “What matters is that the patient survived. That’s our job. The process doesn’t matter as much as the outcome. Anyway, my wife just had a baby this month–lunch is on me today.”
Everyone caught the hint and went along with it, dropping the subject.
But Rowan stayed stern, his face dark. “From today on, Evelyn will attend all my surgeries and assist me. This isn’t luck or an excuse. Her skill will prove itself. If she makes a mistake, I’ll punish her.”
He paused, then looked at the doctor who had complained. “But if she works carefully every time and doesn’t make mistakes, I expect the rest of you to stop your petty gossip.”
Rowan’s authority filled the room. No one dared argue.
The doctor slipped back into the crowd, silent.
Rowan went on, giving detailed instructions for the patient’s aftercare.
Myrtle, who was assigned as the bedside nurse, wrote everything down carefully and promised not to slack off.
Just then, there was a knock at the door. A well–dressed woman in her early 30s walked in. “Excuse me, which doctor inserted a pen tube into my father’s throat last night?” she asked.
“That was me. I’m Dr. Rowan Cook,” Rowan answered right away, stepping forward. “What can I do for you?”
“We’d like you to come to the ward and talk privately. Is that alright?” the woman said calmly, her expression unreadable.
The doctor who had opposed Rowan–Rex Daniels–noticed this and felt secretly pleased. He assumed the woman was unhappy with what happened last night.
After all, when families came to thank a doctor, they usually started crying before they even reached the office,
He couldn’t wait to see how Rowan would get out of this mess.
