Chapter 93 Emergency Surgery
Philip was suddenly standing at the door, holding a thermos of hot water.

Quade knew he was in trouble. He quickly grabbed Evelyn’s white coat, hoping she’d save him from getting scolded too badly.
Evelyn looked at Philip’s calm, serious face and felt a little sorry for Quade. “Even though he faked it, the muscle spasms were real. He’s still half a patient, so don’t be too harsh.”
Quade poked his head out from behind her and nodded like crazy. “Yeah, yeah! I really had muscle spasms! Foam at the mouth and everything–it’s true! Boss, I swear I’m sincere!”
Philip didn’t respond.
He just set the thermos down and turned to Evelyn. “Is it serious?”
Evelyn gave Quade a quick check. “Not too bad. Just needs one night of rest.”
“Discharge him tomorrow morning,” Philip said flatly.
Since Philip hadn’t raised his voice once, Quade thought maybe he’d gotten off easy.
He started to relax–until Philip added, “When you get back, run 100 laps.”
“What?! Evelyn … ” Quade almost fainted. His eyes begged her for help.
Evelyn couldn’t stop smiling at his pitiful face.
She stepped in. “Make it less. His intentions were good–he only did this because you missed
- me.
Before Philip could answer, she added, “But if you don’t wanna see me, you can punish him however you like. I won’t stop you.”
The room went quiet. Then Philip said, “Fifty laps.”
That one line revealed everything–he did want to see her.
Quade was so thankful he almost wanted to grovel in front of Evelyn. “Evelyn, you saved my life! Thank you!”
“Enough, Evelyn laughed. “Rest now. You’ve still got 50 laps waiting tomorrow. That’s plenty.”
She and Philip left together and went back to her dorm.
With just the two of them, the little room suddenly felt too small, almost crowded.
It had been so long since she’d been alone with Philip that Evelyn felt awkward, handing him a

glass of water while her eyes darted around nervously.
Philip was calm, sipping his water while quietly looking around her room.
Finally, he said, “It’s neat and tidy.”
“Guess I’ll take that as a compliment,” Evelyn muttered.

She went to get two sets of dishes. “You’re staying at the hospital tonight, right? That’s tough. I’ll grab food for you–you can eat and then head out.”
But before she could leave, Philip gently wrapped his arms around her from behind.
That clean, familiar scent enveloped her.
Evelyn froze, stiff as a board. “What’s with the sudden hug?”
“In the ward earlier,” Philip said quietly, “what I meant was: I missed you, and I wanted to see you.”
Just for that?
Evelyn burst out laughing, showing her small white teeth, happiness swelling inside her.
Still, she tried to play it cool. “I get it. No need to say it again.”
“No,” Philip said firmly. “It matters. You need to hear it, not just guess it. My feelings for you should be out in the open. I’d be useless if I had to make you guess.”
His confident tone hit her straight in the heart.
The air in the dorm grew warm, thick with quiet tension.
Philip held her shoulders, gently turned her around, and brushed his chin against hers.
The faint rose scent from her hair lingered between them–soft, but intoxicating.
He tilted her chin up with his pale fingers and kissed her.
They hadn’t seen each other in two weeks, and all the bottled–up longing exploded in that moment–hot, urgent, impossible to stop
The kiss grew deeper, both of them caught in the rush of it.
Finally, Philip let go, even though he clearly didn’t want to.
Evelyn rested in his arms, breathing lightly, her eyes shining.
But Philip stopped himself before things went further.

He always respected her, never forcing anything. He wanted her to give herself willingly,
without doubts.
That careful restraint made Evelyn’s heart ache in the best way.
“I’ll get the food–you wait here,” Philip said. He took the meal boxes and stepped out.
Evelyn sat alone, trying to calm her racing thoughts.
Before long, he was back–with one meat dish, one veggie, and even an egg.
Evelyn blinked. “I don’t remember the cafeteria having that combo.”
“The lady at the cafeteria gave it,” Philip answered honestly.
In these times, every meal required coupons, but somehow Philip always managed to eat with nothing but his face.
Evelyn suddenly thought it wouldn’t be so bad if Quade stayed longer–she’d get more free eggs from Philip.
Just then, Philip pulled a stack of coupons from his pocket and handed them to her.
“What’s this?” Evelyn asked, taking them.
They were all meal coupons, egg coupons, even two for milk–a small bundle collected over a long time.
It was obvious–they were for her.
“Keep them for yourself. Army food’s already bad, and when you get extra nutrition coupons, you give them all to me? Don’t forget–you just recovered from a gunshot wound,” she said while wrapping the stack of coupons in a rubber band and handing them back.
But Philip pushed them gently toward her again.
I don’t need them. What matters is that you don’t go without. You don’t need cafeteria ladies sneaking you food–you can use these.”
He patted her head softly. “When I push through training, I think of you. That gives me strength. So think of these as payment to you–because thinking of you isn’t free.
Evelyn laughed. For the first time, she realized Philip could twist logic in the funniest way.
She didn’t argue anymore and tucked the coupons into her pocket.
Finally, they sat down to eat together.
Evelyn pushed her egg toward him. “I can’t think of you for free either–this is your reward.”

Just as the cozy atmosphere settled in, Myrtle rushed in. “Dr. Schmidt, quick! A patient needs emergency surgery! Dr. Cook asked for you specifically!”
