Maybe Yvonne didn’t react right away because Evelyn’s words were somewhat too direct.
Then she turned, smiled softly, and said, “Silly, what are you talking about? Spending money on you is normal. How could I ever feel sorry about it?”
you
She sighed, looking sad, and added, “It’s my fault. I treated you badly before and made you so nervous and scared. Back then, my heart was only set on Alice. I ignored you and let suffer. But now it’s different. I’ve told you already–I want to get along with you. I want to make up
for all those years. I just hope it’s not too late, and that you can forgive me.”
Her tone was serious, and her eyes were starting to tear up, as if she really meant it.
Evelyn stayed quiet, watching her.
Yvonne started to feel uneasy under Evelyn’s steady gaze. Finally, she spoke again, “It’s not too late. Right now is the best time.”
Evelyn picked up the laundry powder and the short–sleeved shirt.
Seeing her goal reached, Yvonne quickly found an excuse to leave the hospital.
As soon as she left, Evelyn threw all the food away.
Just then, Myrtle came in to grab something. Seeing the food dumped, she almost cried out, “Dr. Schmidt, why waste food like this? These are meat dishes! They’re 50 cents each in the cafeteria. If you don’t want them, give them to me!”
Evelyn turned to her calmly. “Some food will rot your stomach if you eat it.”
Myrtle froze, stepping back in shock. She stared at the trash can. “Wait … is it poisoned?”
“No. Worse than poison,” Evelyn answered simply.
Myrtle looked confused. She followed Evelyn, asking again and again what she meant, but Evelyn gave no answer. In the end, she gave up.
The food was gone. The laundry powder and shirt also had to be dealt with.
Evelyn pulled out a small spittoon from under the bed and stuffed them inside, along with the soap and bar soap Yvonne had brought before.
She already knew from Harriet that there was something wrong with them.
Before switching dorms with Harriet, Evelyn had used up her own old soap, Yvonne’s soap was set aside, saved for later.
Harriet didn’t care at first, but after they swapped rooms, Evelyn took those items with her,

Soon after, Harriet’s face and body broke out red and itchy, scratching so much that her skin even bled.
Harriet kept complaining that the humid Southville weather gave her eczema.
But Evelyn could tell it wasn’t eczema at all–it was skin poisoning. Everyone else ate the same and bar soap. food, so the only difference was the soap
After Harriet moved out, Evelyn shoved those things under the bed, never touched them again, and secretly bought the same kind to trick Yvonne.
Clearly, the trick worked.
Yvonne believed Evelyn used the items and, thinking it wasn’t enough, brought new ones.
Evelyn accepted everything with a smile, but stashed it all under the bed.
This fight with Yvonne was far from over.
After hiding the spittoon back under the bed, Evelyn put on her white coat and went to Rowan’s office.
But Rowan wasn’t there. Even the big lock she had hung on the door in the morning was untouched.
He hadn’t even shown up.
That old man was probably somewhere else, feeling sad.
Evelyn shook her head, helpless, and decided to check the wards first, see if there was anything out of the ordinary.
After only two rooms, she suddenly saw a familiar face.
Surprised, she asked, “Quade? What are you doing here?”
Quade sat on a hospital bed, munching on a piece of fried chicken. His face was covered in grease. He looked up, eyes bright, and mumbled, “Evelyn, you’re back! The nurses said you were off today, so I thought you’d only be back tonight!”
It was like they were talking past each other.
Evelyn gave him a flat look, knowing she’d get nothing straight from him.
She walked to the bed, flipped open the chart on the wall, and checked it.
Her face darkened as she scolded, “Muscle spasms again? That’s why you’re admitted? Didn’t I tell you to control your breathing during training? If you don’t get treated in time, you could
suffocate!”

Quade just grinned, waved a hand, and whispered, “Don’t worry. I know my limits.”
Limits? As if accidents could be controlled.

Then he admitted cheerfully, “I faked the spasms. I exaggerated them so I’d get admitted.”
He took another big bite of chicken, then gave her a thumbs–up. “But Evelyn, the food here is amazing. It’s way better than the military. Army food is like pig slop, and I’m never full.”
Evelyn’s face turned red with embarrassment. “So you faked an illness just for food?”
If that was true, she really didn’t know what to say to him.
“Of course not,” Quade denied quickly. “It’s my first time here–how would I know about the food? The only thing I knew was that you were interning here.”
“So you came here … for me?” Evelyn asked, hitting the point right away.
“More exactly, I came so my boss could see you.”
Quade finally spilled everything, talking nonstop.
“You don’t know how much he misses you, Evelyn. He looks at your photo all the time. But he isn’t good with feelings. He misses you, but he won’t call. And with all his military duties, he can’t come see you. So I thought of a plan–I pretended to have spasms, told him he had experience helping me before, and got him to come here. That way you two can finally meet.”
He puffed up proudly, as if he had accomplished something great.
Evelyn didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Aren’t you afraid he’d find out?”
“Of course I am! That’s why you must not betray me! I did all this for the sake of building your love–it’s a huge contribution! You cannot ever tell him!”
Just then, a deep voice came from the doorway. “Too late.”
