From the very first time Evelyn saw Harriet with Charles, she had acted far too excited around him.
That girly, flirty energy–Evelyn noticed it right away.
But the difference between them was huge.
They were 15 years apart.
So Evelyn never thought too much about it, thinking she was just imagining things.
But now, sitting here, it was clear—she hadn’t been wrong at all.
Harriet fancied Charles.
The problem was … she had no idea he was already married.
And now, facing the truth, she had no chance.
Evelyn thought it all through in her head, but on the outside, she kept her face calm, quietly eating without saying anything.
After all, other people’s relationships weren’t her concern.
But Harriet couldn’t hide how upset she was.
She stared at Charles and said pointedly, “You never told me you were married.”
Charles laughed. “I’m so much older than/you. If I weren’t married by now, I’d be the world’s oldest bachelor.”
“Well…” Harriet bit her lip. “Then why don’t you wear a wedding ring?”
She had assumed he was single only because she hadn’t seen one before.
Charles instinctively touched his left hand, then gave Sonya an embarrassed look. “My fault–1 lost it last year during a work trip and never found it again.”
Sonya gave him a helpless glare/ “How can you lose something that important?”
“It’s just a ring. You’re what’s important,” Charles said quickly, comforting her.
The love between them, which had been through many trials, was obvious. They didn’t care
who saw it.
Jeremy was already used to it, smiling as he put more food in Evelyn’s plate.

Evelyn just took a piece of fried chicken, chewing quietly.
But Harriet’s face had gone pale.
She was gripping her utensils so tightly that they looked like they might break.
“Excuse me, I’m going to the bathroom,” she muttered.
She stayed in there as long as it took to finish a whole meal. By the time she came back, everyone was already done.
Jeremy, being polite, had set aside a portion for her and told her to eat while it was hot.
But Harriet couldn’t bring herself to eat.
She stood up, saying the car repair should be done soon, so she would head back to the mountain hospital.
Sonya walked her to the door, warmly holding her hand. “I’ll be doing interviews out there soon. Maybe I’ll visit you.”
“Okay,” Harriet replied, then turned and left.
When Sonya glanced back, she saw Charles clearing the dishes. She quickly stepped in, taking over, and then pulled Evelyn into the kitchen to “help wipe dishes.”
Jeremy panicked. “No, no, Dr. Schmidt is our guest–our family owes her a big favor! How could she wash dishes? Don’t touch them. I’ll do it myself!”
“It’s fine. I’d feel awkward just sitting around. If I didn’t help, I wouldn’t dare come for a meal again,” Evelyn said lightly.
Hearing that, Jeremy finally gave in and let her help.
In truth, with only six people eating, there weren’t many dishes. Evelyn’s help wasn’t needed at
all.
Sonya had pulled her in for another reason.
Evelyn knew it, which was why she agreed without hesitation.
Inside the kitchen, Sonya spoke directly, “Dr. Schmidt, I want to clear something up. I hope it won’t put you in a tough spot.”/
Evelyn shook her head. “No, it’s okay. You handle it however you want.”
A smart person never wastes words.
And Sonya, being a sharp reporter, noticed everything.

From the moment she walked in, she already understood Harriet’s feelings.
But since Evelyn was there, she didn’t call it out–she just tested Harriet, watching her
reaction.

“I get it,” Sonya said softly. “A young girl’s first crush… who hasn’t gone through that? It’s best if she can let it go.”
Evelyn gave a small nod. “You don’t have to worry. Charles only has betray you.”

It wasn’t just because Sonya was sensitive that she noticed. Harriet’s obvious behavior simply made it hard to miss.
If Sonya could see it, then of course Charles could too.
But to him. Harriet was like a little sister. Their roles were clear.
So Sonya had nothing to fear.
Still, she sighed. “Dr. Schmidt, you’re not married, so maybe you don’t understand. At first, two people are together for love. Later, it’s about companionship. And after a while… people get tired. That’s when you
d something new to keep them close again.”
By “something new,” she meant a child.
A child could bring fresh love into their marriage.
But Sonya and Charles had been married for over six years, and she still hadn’t gotten
pregnant.
“Right now, he still loves me,” she said quietly. “But what about later? Out there are thousands of Harriets who could give him a new spark… maybe even bear his child.” Her voice was heavy with sadness.
On the outside, Sonya always looked relaxed and gentle. But here, with Evelyn, she let her guard down and showed her pain.
Despite the age gap, she chose to trust Evelyn.
Evelyn gently held her wrist.
Sonya wiped away a tear. “I know what you want to say. Don’t try to comfort me–I’ve already accepted it,”
“No,” Evelyn said firmly. “I’m not just comforting you. You’ll have children someday. If you cry over something that’s bound to happen, you’ll only make God sad.”
I’ll have children someday?

She wiped her tears again. “That’s impossible. The hospital told me I can’t have kids. No chance at all.”
For years, she had taken medicine, gone to doctors, but nothing had worked.
Luckily, in the Cannons, Charles and Jeremy still treated her the same, whether she had kids
or not.
If she’d married into another strict family, she might have been kicked out long ago. What happened with Harriet wouldn’t have happened at all.
But Evelyn looked at her seriously. “You will have kids, Mrs. Cannon. Will you trust me this once?”
Looking into Evelyn’s warm amber eyes, Sonya suddenly felt a tiny spark of hope rise inside her heavy heart.
