Chapter 87 It’s the Same
Rowan listened to the whole story, and a chill ran down his back.
Can’t you girls just get along? Always fighting over small things, setting traps for each other it’s unsettlin
Evelyn rolled her eyes at him.
“Aren’t you and Dr. Hayward always arguing too? Why don’t you try getting along with him?”
“We’re not the same as you girls. That guy loves to pick fights with me—I can’t just let that go. And did I ever frame him? No. I just tease him,” Rowan said, even humming a little tune to show off.
That silly bit of pride made Evelyn want to laugh and groan at the same time.
Forget it. Those two have been bickering for years. Stopping now would probably feel weird for them.
After chatting about that, Evelyn followed Rowan to do rounds.
When it came to work, Rowan was strict. For every patient, Evelyn had to report their condition, and they worked out a new plan based on the latest updates together.
Even though Evelyn hadn’t been a doctor in her last life, she had spent every single day studying medical knowledge after being reborn. She handled things fine–just slower.
By the time they finished rounds, it was already close to lunchtime.
Rowan told her that once they finished writing up the records, it would be about time to eat.
As they reached the office door, they saw Tom standing there with his hand raised, hesitating to knock.
“Hey, Twix, what are you doing hanging around my office? Planning to steal my new paper?” Rowan barked.
Tom turned and politely greeted them. Then he said, “Evelyn, I need to talk to Dr. Cook for a bit. You go ahead and have lunch first.“..
“Evelyn is my apprentice. Why should she listen to you? And what could I possibly talk to you about? Two grown men alone? Gross. I’m disgusted already,” Rowan shot back.
But Tom didn’t flinch. With his usual smile, he said, “Just a quick chat. It’s almost lunch anyway. Let Evelyn go eat first. You’ll have all the time to tell her what to do later. Just let me be nice just this once.”
“Ugh, whatever,” Rowan snorted. “Go eat first, Evelyn. See? He’s the ‘good guy‘ and I’m the bad one again.”
Evelyn said goodbye and left.
At the cafeteria, she grabbed three meals and carried them back to the second–floor office.
Tom and Rowan had already finished talking and were stepping out.
“Dr. Hayward, lunch,” Evelyn said, handing him one box. “I thought you’d be chatting longer, so I grabbe for you, just in case the cafeteria/ran out.”
Tom stared at the box for a moment before accepting it.
He held it quietly, not opening it right away.

Then he said softly. Evelyn. I’m being transferred to the hospital in the mountains. I might not be b six months
“You’re going with Harriet, right?” Evelyn asked straight out.
In front of her, Tom had no secrets.
He nodded. “I begged Dr. Mayer not to fire her. She came all the way
from Kingstead–leaving home is hard. I offered to take her along as a volunteer at the hospital in the mountains for six months. I hope the tough conditions there will help her realize what she has.”
It was Tom’s choice. Evelyn cot
But she understood why.
change it.
Rowan had once told her that Tom left home decades ago to serve as a military doctor in Southville and never returned.
So, in a way, he was projecting his own homesickness onto Harriet. That was why he was being so soft on her.
“Dr. Hayward, if you want to go, no one can stop you. But I need to say something,” Evelyn said.
Tom nodded. “From the first day I met you, I knew you were smart. Now you sound more like a mentor to me. Go ahead–I’ll remember.”

Evelyn told him, “When kids learn to walk, they fall a few times. Growing up is the same–you have to stumble sometimes to really learn.”
It was simple, clear, and straight to the point.
Tom understood right away.
“Thanks, Evelyn. When I come back, I hope you’re officially confirmed here. I think we’d make great coworkers,” Tom said.
Evelyn smiled, showing her little white teeth. Her face lit up with warmth. “I’ll still be here when you return.”
As Tom walked away, he suddenly turned back, waving the meal box, “I’ll never forget this lunch.”
Back in the office, Rowan’s eyes were glimmering with tears.
He hadn’t expected Evelyn to come back so quickly and rushed to hide the evidence, scolding her, “So you do know to come back and finish the records. Good job. No punishment today.”
Evelyn nodded, setting his meal on the desk. “It’s still warm. You should eat.”
Without waiting, she started eating her own.
Rowan sat in silence for a while before carefully speaking. “Did you know? Tom’s going to the hospital
mountains as a volunteer.”
This time, he didn’t call him Twix.
Evelyn didn’t look up. “I know. Dr. Hayward told me. Why? You gonna miss him?”

“Miss him?” Rowan slammed the desk. “What nonsense are you spouting? Why would I miss him.
my wife. Don’t act like we have some kind of bond. Don’t spread rumors. He’s my rival, and I’m happy: gone. Work will be so much easier!”
“But I don’t see any happiness on your face,” Evelyn replied.
Rowan forced a grin.
It didn’t even last three seconds before fading.
Like a popped balloon, he sank back into his chair. “I’m not missing him. I just feel bad for him. Harriet caused all this, and he’s stuck taking the hit for her. What kind of crazy logic is that? And the hospital still hires people like him? Aren’t they scared patients will suffer?”
“Dr. Cook, if I were the one getting punished today, would you go to the mountain hospital with me as a volunteer?” Evelyn asked.
Without thinking, Rowan blurted, “Of course. You’re my favorite apprentice. Right or wrong, I’ve got your back. I’ll take care of you.”
“So you see, it’s the same for Dr. Hayward. No matter what Harriet does, he’s her mentor: He has to stick it out until the end,” Evelyn said, turning Rowan’s own words back on him.
