Chapter 86 Losing Her Cool
Seeing Harriet refusing to let go of his apprentice, Rowan lost his temper right away.
If Evelyn gets framed and kicked out, how would I ever find another smart, pretty apprentice like her?
Rowan had spent half his life in medicine, and he was counting on Evelyn to carry on his work.
At that moment, one thought flashed in his mind: Even if Evelyn had done it, he would still protect her.
But just as he was about to argue with Harriet, Evelyn gave his hand a light tap, signaling him to calm down.
Seeing this, Rowan finally relaxed.
Of course, she’s ready. She’s sharper than this so–called student of Twix’s.
So he stepped back, letting Evelyn take control, and quietly waited to see how she handled it.
When Harriet caught sight of Evelyn’s half–smile, half–smirk, she suddenly felt guilty and took a step back without realizing it. “Why are you looking at me like that? Feeling guilty, huh? I knew it–you’re the one trying to set me up. I trusted you, and this is what you do to me?” Harriet shouted.
“Actually, Myrtle already knew who did it this morning,” Evelyn said calmly.
Harriet, who had been yelling so confidently a second ago, froze in place.
Her stiff neck turned slowly toward Evelyn. “W–what do you mean?” she stammered.
M
“Exactly what I said. Myrtle found proof in her room and came to talk to me about what to do. When you came in, we were already discussing it,” Evelyn explained.
Taylor let out a long sigh of relief. “Ah, evidence makes everything simple. Evelyn, why didn’t you show it earlier? I was so confused–I didn’t know who to believe.”
Before Evelyn could answer, Rowan jumped in to defend her. “Confused? Come on. It’s obvious that it’s just Twix’s student crying thief when she’s the thief herself. Mayer, have you become senile? Can’t you see that?”
Being called out like that made Taylor blush. He rubbed his nose awkwardly and mumbled, “Rowan, there are interns here. At least give me some respect–don’t just call me Mayer all the time.”
“I don’t care. You doubted my apprentice, so that’s what I’ll call you,” Rowan snapped, like a stubborn kid.
But Harriet wasn’t relieved at all.
Because Evelyn said Myrtle had proof, but she hadn’t brought it up earlier.
If there was proof, why would Myrtle go to Evelyn instead of me? Unless…
No, that’s impossible.
Myrtle sleeps like a log every night, snoring so loudly that the walls shake. How could she have noticed anything?
Maybe Evelyn is bluffing.
Thinking this, Harriet regained some confidence and pressed harder. “You say there’s proof–what proof?”
Chapter 86 Losing Her Cool
Evelyn looked troubled. She glanced at Harrict, then at Taylor, and let out a deepaigh Myrtle and

Evelyn held up an earring.
It was Harriet’s.
She had always said it was a gift from her father on her 18th birthday–pure silver with a ruby, worth a lot.
Now, one earring was in Evelyn’s hand.
The other still hung from Harriet’s ear.
“This morning, when Myrtle got up to look for the watch, she found this. She didn’t know what to do, so she came to me. We thought maybe you just took the watch back because you didn’t want her to wear it. That’s why I told you it was lost. Who knew you’d push so hard? Harriet, your little act of crying thief is over.”
Harriet’s face turned pale as chalk. She couldn’t say a word.
Rowan snorted. “See? Twix’s students just get worse and worse. Not like me. I take in one–apprentice, and she’s top–class. That’s quality, Mayer, not quantity.”
Taylor coughed and cut in. “Rowan, take Evelyn back to work. I’ll talk to Harriet alone.”
Rowan guided Evelyn out but reminded Taylor, “Handle this well. Pretending to be a victim and trying to pit coworkers against each other–that’s toxic. We can’t keep people like her.”
Back in his office, Rowan finally dropped into his chair with a sigh of relief. “You didn’t disappoint me. Even though you had proof, you waited until the end to show it. Look at Harriet–she’s shrunk like a popped balloon.”
But Evelyn shook her head. “If I really had proof, I would’ve shown it. I only waited until the end so that Harriet would trap herself.”
Rowan froze, then sat up. “Wait … you didn’t have proof? Then the earring you showed …
“On the way to Dr. Mayer’s office, she walked too fast and dropped it. I picked it up,” Evelyn explained.
Anyone guilty would panic at that point.
And Harriet had no excuses left. That “proof” was the final straw that crushed her.
Rowan was quiet for a while, then said, “Even God had enough and gave you the chance to expose her. I told you, she was no good. She bullied Myrtle before, and the next minute, she acts all innocent, like a goldfish forgetting everything in seven seconds.”
“I know. That’s why I took the watch yesterday. I had to play it safe.” Evelyn replied.
“You little fox–you saw through it from the start, didn’t you?” Rowan said, finally catching on.
And he was right.
Evelyn had suspected from the moment she switched dorms.
Those cockroaches? I’m betting Harriet planted them to force Evelyn into moving across from Myrtle,

setting the stage for her scheine.
And yesterday’s trip to the department store was just the setup.
Harriet bought the watch, made it look like Evelyn admired it, and built the story that Evelyn wanted it to badly that she would steal it.
She even let Myrtle have the watch, making it seem like it was taken from her. Then, when it appeared in Evelyn’s room, the story would be that Evelyn stole it and blamed Myrtle, so she’d give Harriet a brand–new watch as compensation.
The plan had been going for over a week, showing just how patient Harriet could be.
Too bad all that patience got wasted on the wrong scheme.
