Chapter 76 To Say Nothing
Yvonne almost gagged.
Evelyn’s way of bending the truth was something Yvonne had never seen before.

She forced herself to swallow the bitterness crawling up her throat and said, “Of course I’m not leaving. Alice isn’t here right now, and we’re about to make up. Those negatives don’t matter anymore. If keeping them makes you feel safer, then keep them. I don’t care.”
She backed off on purpose, trying to lure Evelyn into trusting her.
Evelyn gave a slow nod, her tone skeptical. “If you put it like that, then I’ll choose to believe you for now. Let’s call it a truce.”
“Good. From now on, I’ll take care of you. I’ll make up for the love I neglected to give you for 20 years. Evelyn, you believe me, don’t you?”
“Sure, if you follow through with your promise,” Evelyn replied.
The meaning was clear. Words weren’t enough.
Yvonne kept her promise, though her cheerfulness was suffocating.
She bought Evelyn every necessity for her dorm. She even slipped her 50 dollars, urging her to eat regularly, not to stress about money, and always to buy meat if it was on the cafeteria menu. If her ration coupons fell short, Yvonne demanded she come back for more. She promised Evelyn would never go without.
Her forced affection lasted until Zaid came home from work.
The pile of goods still sat by the doorway, untouched.
There wasn’t even room for his shoes. Zaid frowned. “What is this? Why’d you buy so much? Are you trying to replace the whole house?”
“Honey, you’re back!”
Yvonne called out sweetly and hurried to bring him his slippers.
“These things,” she explained, pointing at the pile, “are for Evelyn. She just reported to Brookhaven Hospital. It’s too far for her to come home daily. Since she’ll live in the dorm,
she needs the basics.”
She crouched down and began showing Zaid each item one by one.

Then she asked, “Honey, do you think I missed anything? Tell me so I can buy it tomorrow and send it with Evelyn.”
Zaid, who was always stingy toward Evelyn unless it involved appearances, scowled at the sight.
“This is enough. You gave her so much she won’t even be able to carry it. Even if she takes a cab, the driver will only drop her at the gate.”
“It’s fine,” Yvonne said brightly. “I’m off tomorrow. I’ll carry it up for her myself. By the way, Evelyn, what floor are you on?”
At that, Evelyn understood perfectly what this “kindness” was about.
She kept her face calm and smiled.
“I’m on the third floor. I don’t remember the exact room number.”
‘No problem. I’ll get the answer when I take you there tomorrow,” Yvonne replied.
With Evelyn settled, Yvonne turned back to Zaid.
‘Brookhaven Hospital isn’t comfortable, but plenty of military officers get treated there. Maybe even your dad’s old colleagues, or their sons and grandsons. Don’t you want to stop by, say hello, maybe ask them to look out for Evelyn?” she suggested.
The thought hooked Zaid.
He had served in the army once. He hadn’t climbed high in the ranks, but with Bill’s connections, his current post was steady and well–paid.
Though more importantly, this job was his was comfier than the one he had in the military, and it paid better too.
Showing off a little would be no harm.
After some thought, Zaid put on a reluctant expression. “I don’t really keep in touch with them anymore. But I can help Evelyn move into her dorm, maybe look at her work environment. That way, when I pick her up later, I’ll know where to go.”
No one questioned his lie, so the plan was made.
The next morning, Evelyn, Yvonne, and Zaid drove to Brookhaven Hospital.
The hospital’s morning meeting started at eight. They arrived at the dorm building a little
past seven.

Myrtle had just returned from the cafeteria with breakfast. When she saw Evelyn, she greeted her warmly and even helped carry her belongings upstairs.
In 1983, top universities usually gave temporary housing with new job placements. Because of high demand, the dorms were small.
Evelyn’s room was only about 120 square feet. It was a one–bedroom that had been divided later, but it was good enough.
Evelyn didn’t complain. She accepted whatever assignment she was given.
Yvonne placed the supplies on the empty iron bed and immediately began inspecting the room, asking Myrtle about curfew.
Myrtle looked confused. “This isn’t a college dorm. There’s no curfew. People work night shifts all the time, so they come back whenever. If there was someone guarding the gates and she fell asleep or stepped away, no one could even get inside.”
Yvonne nodded.
She looked at Evelyn. “That’s perfect. I worried about doors locking at night. This way Evelyn won’t have trouble coming or going.”
Myrtle smiled with a trace of envy. “Dr. Schmidt, your mom is amazing. She thinks of everything.”
“Yes, she takes good care of me,” Evelyn replied.
While they spoke, Zaid grew restless. “We can leave the stuff here. We’ll come back later. Let’s meet Dr. Mayer now, so we don’t get lost when Evelyn starts work.”
He wasn’t worried about Evelyn. He only wanted to show off,
Evelyn saw through him but didn’t expose it, and she went along.
At the hospital entrance, they ran into a soldier arriving for a follow–up. By chance, he turned out to be the son of one of Bill’s comrades. He was a straightforward man who had spent years in service but never made it past squad leader.
Zaid latched onto him immediately and wouldn’t let go, talking his car off.
Yvonne had achieved her goal and had no reason to linger with Evelyn any longer.
She used Evelyn’s early meeting as an excuse to hurry her along, reminding her not to be late on her first day. As for exploring the hospital, Yvonne said they could do that on their own later.

Evelyn had long since seen through this couple, but she didn’t point it out.
She smiled lightly, nodded, and walked away.
