Yvonne staggered back in shock, slamming into the corner of the coffee table. A bruise spread across her hip almost instantly.
“You… what do you want from me?” she stammered, her voice trembling. “I’m your mother!”
Evelyn’s eyes were cold. “Have you ever treated me like your daughter? Even once?”
The question struck Yvonne dumb. Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.
By the time she pulled herself together, Evelyn had already turned around and gone upstairs leaving her standing there, cold sweat sliding down her spine.
In that moment, Yvonne felt exposed, as though her fortress walls had collapsed and secret she’d guarded was laid bare.
But then she caught herself. Impossible.
There was no way Evelyn could know.
She was just letting her nerves get the better of her.
She reminded herself she’d handled the newspaper notice herself.
every
She had arranged for the ad to be retracted and changed both the landline and her cell number. She told Zaid it was simply to prevent Jasmine from causing more issues.
That excuse had fooled Zaid.
And yet, when Yvonne looked at Evelyn, she couldn’t ignore the faint curve of mockery tugging at Evelyn’s lips.
It felt like a silent slap in the face.
She swallowed her anger, biding her time for the right moment to strike.
Before long, the chance came,
Two weeks passed, and Philip’s gunshot wound had mostly healed. The scar looked brutal, but he was back to living normally.
It happened to line up with the day Evelyn was supposed to report to Brookhaven Hospital. Philip used the excuse of dropping her off to return to his unit and officially resume duty.
The hospital was still a bit of a drive from the base. At the entrance, Philip parked and turned

to her with quiet seriousness. “Wait for me this afternoon. Once I finish all my reports, I’ll come back for you.”
Evelyn nodded. “Okay, I got it.”
She stood there, watching until his jeep disappeared into a cloud of dust, the noise fading until the road was silent again. Only then did she turn and head inside.
Compared to the city hospitals, Brookhaven hospital was pretty simple.
There were just three floors. The first floor was where the outpatient clinic and pharmacy were located, the second was the wards, and the third was the operating rooms and medical records.
Evelyn asked a nurse for directions and quickly found where she needed to check in.
It was the hospital director’s office located in the far corner of the first floor.
She knocked, stepped inside, and handed over her letter of introduction with both hands.
The director, Taylor Mayer, read the letter carefully, his expression softening as he looked back at her. Folding the letter neatly, he returned it with a kind smile. “Your mentor spoke to me about you before you arrived. Said you were not only capable but also very striking. I wasn’t sure I believed her. Now, I can at least confirm half of that.”
And he wasn’t wrong.
Even in simple jeans, a crisp white shirt, and a ponytail, Evelyn’s beauty stood out effortlessly.
As for whether she was truly capable, that would take time to prove.
Taylor’s next task was to assign Evelyn a mentor.
Interns weren’t allowed to dive straight in. They normally had to go through a long period of observation first.
Four years of university meant mostly lectures and lab work–cutting into cadavers, or working with rabbits and mice. But real patients? That required caution.
Even though Evelyn hadn’t become a doctor in her previous life, she still knew the rules of the trade well enough.
She flashed Taylor a warm smile. “I’ll follow whatever arrangement you make. I promise I’ll work hard with my mentor and do my best to get on the operating table as soon as possible— to actually help patients.”

Taylor smiled back. He liked her attitude. It wasn’t flattery. He could tell her passion for medicine was genuine.
It was obvious she truly loved the job.
“All right then,” he said. “I’ll pair you with Tom Hayward. He’s known here for his patience and even temper. Stick close, ask anything you need, and soak it all up. Understood?”
Evelyn was just about to nod when the office door suddenly slammed open.
A gray–haired man stormed in, voice booming. “Dude, what the hell are you pulling?”
He was referring to Taylor.
Still, rank was rank. And in this hospital, only one man would dare storm in and shout at Taylor like that.
Evelyn glanced over, curious.
The gray–haired man was wearing the same white coat as the others, a name badge clipped tc his chest. He was Rowan Cook, a chief surgeon.
“Rowan, can we talk later? I’m in the middle of something,” Taylor said gently, like he was coaxing a child out of a tantrum.
But Rowan wasn’t going anywhere. He brushed Taylor’s hand off his arm and barked, “Don’t give me that. Every time I try to look for you, you’re suddenly out on some conference or research trip. I’m done with excuses. This time I’m taking an intern, and I’m not leaving without one.”
“Come on, Rowan. You’re almost retired. Why not let the younger doctors have a turn training students?”
“That’s exactly why I need one!” Rowan shot back, eyes sharp. “I don’t have much time left. I want to pass on what I know. So either you give me an intern today, or I’m not leaving.”
To prove his point, he dropped into Taylor’s chair with a heavy thud. “In fact, I’ll sit here all night if I have to. Hell, I’ll even wreck your office if that’s what it takes. Then we’ll see who they blame for bullying their soon–to–retire staff.”
The stubbornness was almost childish, like watching a grown man throw a fit.
Taylor could only shake his head, half exasperated, half amused. “The problem is, you showed up too late. The newest interns have already been assigned. How about this, I’ll check if there is still anyone who hasn’t been assigned. Or you wait for the batch coming in next year?”

“Taylor, that’s where you’re wrong.” Rowan’s expression turned serious. “I’m about to retire. You think I can wait until next year? I haven’t taken an intern in ten years. I’ve already given everyone else plenty of chances. This time, I’m not backing down. I need one.”
The two men locked horns, neither willing to budge.
Taylor sighed, clearly stuck. Realizing the standoff wouldn’t end quickly, he finally turned to Evelyn. “Evelyn, why don’t you call it a day? Come back first thing tomorrow morning, and we’ll get this sorted out.”
“Okay. Goodbye, Dr. Mayer. Goodbye, Dr. Cook.”
Out of courtesy, Evelyn gave a little wave.
That tiny gesture caught Rowan’s sharp eyes. He spotted the letter of introduction still in her hand, snatched it without warning, and skimmed through it.
Slapping it down on Taylor’s desk, he barked, “Taylor! Didn’t you just say all the interns were already assigned? Then what’s this? She’s fresh off the bus! Fine. I’m not picky. The letter says she’s promising. I’ll take her.”
