Chapter 70 Got Played Again

It was noon, and the sun was so hot it felt like it was burning right through their skin.

yet, in the middle of that blazing heat, Evelyn suggested that Bill borrow the neighbor’s bike for Yvonne to ride home.

If she had to ride all the way back in this heat, she’d be sunburned and peeling before nightfall.

Evelyn wasn’t being thoughtful at all. She was out to get Yvonne.

“Riding a bike’s way better than walking. At least you get some breeze, it doesn’t feel as hot. Don’t you think so, Yvonne?” Evelyn asked with a sweet smile. Her voice was soft and sweet.

What did she think?

Yvonne thought Evelyn was a nasty little brat.

‘Yeah, Evelyn is right. Riding the bike will be easier. Hold on, I’ll borrow a bike for you,” Bill said.

Yvonne hurried to stop him. “Bill, it’s fine, I’ll just walk. No rush-besides, all the flowers are in bloom out here in the suburbs. I wouldn’t mind taking my time and enjoying the view.”

What she really thought was that once they got out of here, she’d call a cab and head home on her own. She wasn’t about to sit there swallowing Bill and Evelyn’s nonsense.

But Bill wasn’t having it. His expression turned angry. His usual easygoing face turned downright menacing, enough to make Yvonne freeze.

‘What, are you mad I didn’t get you a car? If people see you walking home in the middle of the day, they’ll think I’m being mean to you. At my age, I can’t take that kind of talk.”

Yvonne didn’t dare talk back. Her face crumpled, and she forced a nod. “Thank you for worrying about me, Bill. I was being ungrateful just now. I’ll go with you to borrow the bike, so I can return it later.”

Back in 1983, most folks in Brookhaven Quarters still rode those clunky road bikes-big frames, heavy as hell, with seats way too high.

Petite as she was, Yvonne could only perch on the front crossbar, barely managing to ride,

The moment she was out of Brookhaven Quarters, she jumped off the bike and kicked it hard, all her frustration pouring out in one blow.

Only after venting did she step to the side of the road to flag down a cab.

After several failed tries, Yvonne finally realized why Evelyn had suggested this in the first place.

It wasn’t about making her ride all the way back into town. It was about saddling her with a bike so big she couldn’t even get a cab at all.

Most trunks couldn’t fit a bulky old road bike like that, and every driver who saw it just waved her off and kept going.

They’d rather lose the fare than deal with helping Yvonne figure out how to haul that bike.

The more she thought about being played by Evelyn today, the angrier she got.

If she ever had the chance, she’d tear Evelyn apart.

‘So, what exactly did Yvonne come looking for?” Bill asked.

She’d stormed in full of fire, but the moment she was face-to-face with Evelyn, her confidence vanished.

She looked like she’d come to confront her, yet somehow didn’t dare.

Bill couldn’t make sense of it. What could possibly make Yvonne so afraid of Evelyn?

Evelyn smiled as she said, “That’s a secret for now. I can’t tell you yet.”

‘You little rascal,” Bill said with a smile. “You’re getting better and better at keeping things from me.”

“Even if I don’t tell you everything, I promise you I’d never do anything cruel or evil. All I want is to make the people who hurt me, and hurt you, pay for what they did.”

As she spoke, Bill could clearly see it.

Her eyes were lit with fury, sharp and unyielding, as if nothing could stop her.

“Go ahead,” Bill said quietly.

He’d been a commander for years, seen all kinds of people, and could read them inside out.

He knew exactly what the look in Evelyn’s eyes meant.

If she didn’t get the chance to do what she needed to do, she’d never know peace.

But luckily, Evelyn intention was good.

As she said herself, all she wanted was for the guilty to be punished.

After the drama with Yvonne, Evelyn couldn’t get back to sleep. She gave up, got dressed, and grabbed a cab.

She headed to campus, stopping by Marvin and Rachel’s dorm. For a while, she just sat with Rachel, helping her with some handcrafts.

Then, on a whim, she decided to make a charm.

She remembered how, in her previous life, Phillip got hurt all the time after joining the army.

Maybe a charm could keep him safe, even just a little.

Rachel patiently showed her how to stitch it, and even dug through a basket to pull out a piece of fabric—a blue cloth patterned with rippling waves. She said that was perfect for a

guy.

Evelyn flushed as she said, “Who says it’s for a guy?”

‘Really? I heard from Marvin that your boyfriend is exceptional. He said your boyfriend is handsome and capable. And let’s be honest, we’re only able to live here because of your boyfriend’s help.”

‘How do you know that?” Evelyn blurted, stunned.

She had introduced Marvin to the job, sure, but she had never mentioned who had actually pulled the strings.

Seeing her confusion, Rachel explained with a smile. “After you got Marvin the job, Liutenant Hellwarden showed up a few times. He brought us all sorts of essentials. I wondered about it at first, but when I heard he was your boyfriend, everything clicked.”

“Mrs. Wood, you’d make a great detective,” Evelyn said, giving her a thumbs-up in admiration.

Rachel laughed. “Hardly. I just guessed right, pure luck. Come on, let me show you how to cut this piece first.”

By the end of the afternoon, Evelyn had just about finished the good-luck charm.

The embroidery was a little crooked, but it was the thought that mattered.

“Are you going to see Liutenant Hellwarden later? You could give it to him,” Rachel suggested.

Evelyn shook her head. She had already planned something else. “Not yet. I want to add something else to it.”

No matter how Rachel pressed her, she wouldn’t say what it was.

Eventually, Rachel gave up.

By the time it was 6:00 p.m., Evelyn finally left and headed upstairs to see Philip.

She’d deliberately waited before visiting him as she wanted him to have real time to rest.

If she were up there, he’d never let himself just lie down and sleep while she sat nearby.

He’d force himself to stay awake and chat, and that would only delay his recovery.

So now, she only spoke with him briefly before heading downstairs with Quade. They found a shady spot under the locust trees by the training ground, cooling off as they watched Quade drag himself around the track for 20 laps of warm-ups, looking miserable the whole way.

But when she looked up, she locked eyes with Philip at the window above.

Even from that distance, the heat of his gaze hit her straight in the chest.
