learn from you.”
Evelyn only gave a soft laugh.

Her grandfather didn’t know-she had lived two lifetimes. She was older than Zaid in more ways than one.
And all the pain of the first life had forced her awake.
A man like Zaid could stumble through his whole life in ignorance, and maybe that suited him.
Some people lived like fools and were better off for it.
Shaking the thought away, Evelyn looked back at Bill. “Grandpa, you were a commander. You must know guns inside and out.”
Bill puffed his chest. “Don’t think I’m bragging, but back then I was the sharpshooter of the unit. Any model, any range-I could hit it, every time.”
Evelyn didn’t doubt it.
He was a legend in Southville once.
Otherwise, a man as useless as Zaid could never hold his post, and Yvonne would never have gotten government housing on the Schmidt name alone.
But today, she had another purpose. “Grandpa, what kind of gun leaves a wound torn open like cotton, shredded wide across the flesh?”
“Hmm…” For once, Bill was stumped.
After thinking hard, he asked, “What was the range? Do you know?”
“No.” Evelyn shook her head.
Bill clicked his tongue. “That makes it tough. A lot of models could do it. Most likely, the shot was too close. The bullet’s force hit hard, bounced inside, and the body couldn’t take it—it just tore apart.”
When he noticed her tense expression, his brows drew together. “Why are you asking? Did something happen?”
Evelyn shook her head, her eyes calm and unreadable. “No. Just an assignment from my professor. They want us to learn how the military and hospitals coordinate.”

Before he could press, she grabbed her bowl and headed for the kitchen. “I’ll get more rice. The chicken is delicious.”
Bill watched her retreat with a full plate, his own brows furrowing deep.
