Chapter 43 Worries
Victor took the money and left.
The job of checking in at the police station every day fell to Irene.

But Irene wasn’t as good as Victor at making up excuses. And since Yvonne had once caught her taking 50 dollars from Jasmin, Yvonne didn’t trust her anymore and rarely gave her
money.
That bothered Irene.
She wanted to save that 50 dollars and tuck it away for later.
Thankfully, the awkward situation didn’t last long.
Evelyn began giving her money every day.
Three dollars here, five dollars there.
At first, it didn’t seem like much.
But after a while, it added up.
In just two weeks, she had nearly 50 dollars.
That was no small sum. But how could a girl who had just graduated from university—who hadn’t even started her internship have that kind of money?
Irene grew suspicious and tried asking Evelyn where the cash came from.
Evelyn hesitated. Her lips moved, but she never finished a sentence. Her eyes darted everywhere, unable to meet Irene’s gaze.
Irene caught on. “Did your mom give this to you?”
‘N-no… no,” Evelyn stammered.
Her voice faltered, and the denial sounded more like an admission.
Irene’s chest tightened with anger. “She gave you that much?”
“Grandma,” Evelyn said with wide, innocent eyes, “we’re family. If my mom gives me money and I share it with you, isn’t it the same? You’re the one spending it anyway.”
But it wasn’t the same.

If Yvonne gave money directly to Irene, then Irene was in charge.
But if it went to Evelyn first, Irene had to depend on her granddaughter.

If Evelyn decided not to give her any, what could she do-chase her through the house shouting for it?
What stung even more was that Yvonne would play stingy with her mother, yet generous with her daughter.
If Evelyn could hand out three or five dollars at a time, that meant she had plenty more stashed away.
Could it be ten dollars a day? That thought made Irene’s head spin.
Holy moly! That’s insane.
Living out in the countryside, Irene had no real sense of city expenses. The more she thought about it, the wilder her imagination ran.
Finally, furious, she marched over to confront Yvonne.
But Yvonne felt completely wronged.
When had she ever given Evelyn money?
Ten dollars a day? If she gave Evelyn ten dollars for the whole year, the girl would think she’d hit the jackpot!
Wait. No-that wasn’t quite true.
She had given Evelyn money before.
In fact, she had been blackmailed out of a hundred dollars.
Yvonne was about to explain but stopped herself.
If she tried to justify things to Irene, her mother would ask why she trusted Evelyn so much -why she seemed almost afraid of her.
Unless Irene believed Evelyn was clever enough to have something on Yvonne, there’d be no reason for all these little games with money.
The negatives-those had to stay secret. Irene could never know.
“I didn’t give her any money,” Yvonne said quickly. “She’s just saved up what little she had,

and now she’s trying to stir up trouble between us. Go ask around if you want-my paycheck’s only 20 bucks a month. How could I hand her 10 dollars every single day?”

Then she put on a wounded look. “Mom, do you really believe that girl over me? Am I not your real daughter?”
Irene hesitated, doubt creeping in.
“Then where’s Evelyn getting all that money?” she pressed.
This was easier to explain.
Yvonne replied, “You forgot she’s got a rich grandfather, didn’t you?”
Of course. Irene had let that slip her mind.
Bill was the top figure in Brookhaven Quarters, and he really did have money to spare.
Over the years, Irene had collected her fair share of favors from him too.
Thinking of that, another thought struck her.
“Bill’s birthday is next month,” she said. “That’s only a couple weeks away. We should go. Seventy years old is worth celebrating, and I ought to be there.”
With Zaid proving unreliable and Yvonne distracted by her obsession with Alice, Irene figured some things were better handled by herself.
Yvonne didn’t catch any hidden meaning. She agreed without hesitation.
“Sure, if you want to go, then go.”
Compared to covering her tracks with Evelyn, this was nothing. A simple yes could sweep it aside.
But in the back of her mind, Yvonne was unsettled.
Evelyn was getting sharper by the day.
Even Irene, of all people, being played by her.
That meant when Evelyn finally named her price, it wasn’t going to be simple.
From now on, Yvonne told herself, she’d better stay sharp. She’d need all her wits about her to deal with Evelyn.

Chapter 43 Worries
As usual, Evelyn went every day to give Jeremy a leg massage.

Muscle atrophy and paralysis weren’t small problems-it would take at least a month before any progress could be seen.
But Charles was already improving.
His insomnia had gotten much better. He could fall asleep now and no longer had nightmares. He still had some night sweats, but even those had lessened.
In the past, he had tried all kinds of remedies from holistic doctors, drinking one herbal remedy after another, but nothing worked.
Strangely enough, Evelyn’s treatment made a difference right away.
Charles was truly impressed with her.
Because of that, he held even greater hope for Jeremy’s recovery.
Evelyn told him that healing would take time and couldn’t be rushed.
Charles nodded right away. “I can be patient. I just feel bad that you have to come every single day.”
Then he mentioned that Evelyn’s walking looked a little off lately, that she moved slower than usual. He asked if she was hurt.
Deep down, he was worried that if she fell sick, Jeremy’s treatment would have to stop.
It was selfish, maybe, but it was his honest thought.
He didn’t say it out loud, but Evelyn had already guessed it.
She gave him a small smile and said, “It’s nothing serious. I just got a little cut a few days ago. Bled a bit, but it’s a shallow wound. Almost healed now.”
Before Charles could say anything, Walter jumped in, sounding alarmed.
“You’re hurt? Why didn’t you say so? I’ve got this scar cream that works wonders. A girl
shouldn’t be left with a scar-it won’t look nice. Here, I brought some for my mentee; I’ll give it to you.”
Before he could fish it out, Evelyn stopped him.
“I’m good. My boyfriend already gave me some cream. It works well. The mark is faint, almost gone now.”

Those words hit Walter like a bucket of cold water.
Once again, he had read too much into things.

Evelyn’s boyfriend was thoughtful and caring, making sure everything was taken care of long before Walter ever noticed.
Walter realized he’d been paying too much attention to Philip’s girlfriend and hadn’t even noticed Evelyn was moving slower.
He felt a little regret, but he didn’t offer the cream again.
It was too embarrassing.
Still, when Evelyn got ready to leave, he quietly slipped the small container of cream into her bag while making conversation.
Maybe she’d want it later, but wouldn’t feel comfortable asking.
At least this way, it might still do her some good.
