Chapter 39 Don’t Move

Walter was seriously frustrated.

Finished

Which jerk moved so fast and snatched the perfect daughter-in-law he had in mind for his

mentee?

If only he’d crossed paths with Evelyn a little sooner, maybe his mentee would’ve had a chance.

But now … sigh.

He couldn’t stop himself from quietly hoping they might split up.

Of course, that was pure daydreaming.

Walter wasn’t the kind of guy to actually make that happen.

He quickly changed the topic and went inside with Evelyn.

Charles was still hanging around at home.

He brewed another pot of high-end green tea for Evelyn.

Once the massage was done, he handed a small bag of tea to Evelyn and Walter.

“I picked this up from a tea enthusiast living in some tiny mountain town while I was doing research there. Honestly, I don’t really get tea-I just drink it to stay awake. You guys can take it, or it’ll just sit here and go bad,” Charles said.

Evelyn didn’t bother with polite fluff. If someone offered her something, she took it.

Straightforward honesty always beats fake manners.

She stored all the tea in a drawer in her room.

Since Victor and Irene were staying at her place now, anything valuable couldn’t be left out where they could see it.

If she did, it would disappear in no time.

But the popcorn Charles had made? She didn’t even bother hiding that.

She left it out in the living room.

Victor and Irene were watching TV. The second they saw the popcorn, their eyes

lit up.

They snatched it and started munching happily.

Evelyn paused at the stairway corner, watching quietly. For a moment, she felt like she was raising pigs.

Pigs just keep getting fatter every day, and when the time’s right, they end up on the chopping block.

All she needed to do now was sit back and let it run its course.

Later that day, she went back to the school to see Marvin.

After helping Rachel recover, she’d found Marvin some work at the school’s training ground. Now he had a small room with a metal bed where the two of them could crash-much better than staying in an unfinished building, and no need to worry about the rain or wind.

When she got there, Marvin was sweeping the floor.

A big woven bag was strapped to his side.

Each time he walked by a trash can, he’d dig around, pull out scraps of paper or empty bottles, and drop them into the bag.

Evelyn smiled-he really knew how to make the most of his work.

She walked over to say hi, and Marvin lit up.

He set the broom aside and offered to bring Evelyn over to see Rachel.

“She’s eating well now, looks healthier, and is almost fully healed. She keeps talking about wanting to thank you, and now you’ve actually shown up,” Marvin said.

Evelyn chuckled. “Just doing a follow-up.”

Chatting as they walked, the two of them soon reached the staff dorms.

The tiny room, barely big enough to move around in, had been neatly kept by Rachel and carried a warm, homey feel.

At the doorway hung a fabric curtain with delicate flowers embroidered on it,

Evelyn really liked it and kept glancing up at it.

Rachel told Marvin to give it to Evelyn.

She’d made it herself during her free time.

Evelyn suggested, “You should sell these. You’ve got real talent. Make a few, around campus-they’d sell like crazy.”

The girls show up in groups, and their buying power is pretty shocking.

Rachel, however, looked a little embarrassed.

She felt her handiwork wasn’t good enough to show off.

put

them up

“It’s just random stuff I make for fun. Who’d really buy this? It’s not even practical. It’s fine for passing the time, but putting it out there to sell would just be embarrassing,” she said.

But Marvin cut in, “Mom, just make a few more. I’ll walk around campus and see if anyone’s interested. If nobody buys, no big deal-it’s just a walk for me.”

Nothing to lose.

With the two of them cheering her on, Rachel finally gave in.

Evelyn gave Rachel another checkup.

She was pretty much healed. The fresh skin looked pink and a little uneven—not the nicest sight.

Still, compared to when she was covered in sores, it was a huge improvement.

Rachel was over the moon.

Life isn’t about wanting things without end.

Rachel got that, and for her, just being cured was more than enough.

Scars weren’t the same as being sick, so Evelyn let it be.

After chatting for a bit, she started heading out.

On her way out of the staff dorms, she bumped into Quade,

After passing out so suddenly last time, Quade took forever to get better, and because of that, he missed the graduation review.

Now he had to hang around and wait until next month’s review before he could head off to the army.

With all his friends already gone, he was left there on his own, bored out of his mind.

When Quade spotted Evelyn, it felt like running into family. He hurried over, smiling from

ear to ear.

He greeted her cheerfully.

Still grinning, he asked, “Evelyn, where are you off to?”

“Just dropped by to visit a friend, and I’m leaving now,” Evelyn answered.

But Quade wasn’t ready to let her go that quickly.

His eyes shifted, then he grinned and said, “Come on, let me buy you a meal. I still owe you from last time. Just one meal, alright?”

Evelyn couldn’t help but laugh.

It wasn’t even mealtime-what “meal” was he talking about?

But Quade wasn’t about to let a familiar face slip away. He kept bugging her, even dangling Philip as bait.

“If you eat with me, I’ll spill some secrets about the Boss,” he said.

Everything else she could brush off, but that caught her attention.

So in the end, Evelyn agreed to go with him.

It wasn’t even mealtime, and the campus cafeteria was already shut, so Quade decided to take her off campus to grab food.

Right outside the campus, the streets were lined with food stands.

He chose a place that sold chicken burgers and headed in with Evelyn.

Quade turned into a total chatterbox, going on and on the moment he sat down.

Evelyn barely had a chance to say anything, so she just kept refilling his water.

Eventually, Quade squirmed a little, looking embarrassed, and told her,

“I gotta run to the bathroom. When I come back, I’ll spill the real juicy stuff. What I told you earlier was nothing.”

Nothing? And he’d already been rambling for half an hour?

Evelyn seriously felt like rolling her eyes.

She shooed him away, glad to finally have a quiet moment.

But it didn’t last.

Barely a minute later, noise broke out outside. Someone stumbled in, his clothes smeared with blood, and his soaked clothes were slightly shiny.

He bolted straight toward Evelyn and ducked under the table.

The tables in this small shop were old and kind of gross, so the owner just threw waterproof gray cloths over them.

Worked out great for that guy.

He slipped under, hiding himself completely.

A moment later, Evelyn felt a cold blade press against the side of her thigh. “Don’t move.”
