Chapter 34 Trusting Each Other
It would be great if Jeremy’s illness could be cured.
Finished
After more than a year, it had become chronic, and with the muscle atrophy, the possibility of recovery didn’t seem very high.
That’s why Charles remained skeptical.
The main reason, though, was that he didn’t think Evelyn was capable.
As the editor-in-chief of a newspaper, he’d seen a lot over the years.
No matter the field, an expert only really earns that title after years of experience.
Unless Evelyn was a medical prodigy, Charles couldn’t believe she could cure his father’s illness at such a young age.
He was skeptical.
Out of politeness, though, he still invited Evelyn and Walter inside for tea.
To make it easier for Jeremy to come and go, they had opened a new door on the west side of the yard, so he didn’t have to go all the way around from the neighborhood gate.
But with the new door, the courtyard was easily dirtied and difficult to keep clean.
As Evelyn walked in, she kept noticing all these little details.
Anyone who took such good care of their dad made a great first impression on her.
Sonya was pouring them coffee.
The top-grade coffee was fragrant and left a pleasant sweet aftertaste.
Even Evelyn, who didn’t know much about coffee, could tell it was a good coffee.
The Cannons were being genuinely hospitable.
So, Evelyn decided not to beat around the bush. She spoke frankly and said, “Charles, Mrs. Cannon, I’ve found the main cause of Jeremy’s leg injury. Give me some time, and I can fix
it.”
“But… you’re so young and don’t have much experience. What if something goes wrong?” Charles voiced his greatest worry.

Evelyn understood his concern.
Everyone only has one dad, and Charles was genuinely devoted to Jeremy.
Although Jeremy couldn’t walk right now, he was in good health.
If the treatment went wrong and caused other problems, what would they do?

“I know it’s hard to ask you to trust me right away. If you don’t believe me, I can treat you first,” Evelyn said, nodding.
Charles was shocked. “I’m not sick.”
“You’ve been having insomnia, right? Even when you sleep, you have nightmares, and you sweat at night?” Evelyn stated the symptoms.
She was spot on.
He rubbed his chin, a bit taken aback. “Insomnia is an illness?”
“Not exactly,” Evelyn said. “But nightmares and night sweats are. Your body is weak, and it’s sending you a signal, but you’ve been ignoring it.”
Most diseases, with the exception of a few rare ones, send signals to the brain and cause a physical response in the early stages.
If ignored and not addressed, they get worse. When the body can no longer regulate itself, it’s like a snapped string-hard to fix.
So in a way, the saying “sickness can come out of nowhere” isn’t really accurate.
But today, Evelyn wasn’t trying to argue about this saying.
She carefully explained the cause of Charles’s condition.
He traveled a lot for work, had a messed-up sleep schedule, and was stressed. All of it triggered a physical reaction.
If left unchecked, it wouldn’t be just insomnia, his spleen and kidneys would weaken, too.
And for a man, you need to take care of your kidneys.
“I’ll prescribe you some medicine. Take it for a week without stopping, then I’ll check in again, and you can decide what to do next,” Evelyn said.
But Jeremy spoke up from the side, “No need to wait a week, let’s start today. I trust you, Dr.

Schmidt.”
“Dad.” Charles still looked a little nervous.

Jeremy explained it to him, “Dr. Schmidt and I met at the train station by chance-that’s fate. Before we talked about my legs, she didn’t know anything about me, so she wasn’t after money-that’s integrity. And now, even facing doubt, she’s willing to prove herself-that’s kindness. She’s done all three. What’s there to doubt?”
She just wants to treat him; what’s there to be suspicious of?
Charles was a reasonable man.
After hearing Jeremy’s reasoning, he felt it was perfectly logical.
He was about to nod when he saw Evelyn shake her head. “No, no, no. I’m not that noble. I’ll also be charging you a fee for my treatment.”
“Okay, if you can cure me, I’ll give you all the money I have saved.”
Jeremy agreed without hesitation.
Only when you’re sick do you really realize how important your health is.
But Evelyn shook her head again. “I don’t want money. Just owe me a favor. If I ever need your help, just don’t turn me away.”
It sounded a bit businesslike, but because Evelyn said it so frankly, it didn’t feel harsh or ugly.
Charles and Sonya exchanged a glance and didn’t say anything.
They didn’t have any enemies, so they weren’t worried that someone would try to harm Jeremy.
Besides, Evelyn had revealed her identity, so she wasn’t worried about being looked into.
With the doctor being so straightforward, they should have felt at ease.
“Dad, we support your treatment. If you need anything at all, just let me know. I’ll do whatever I can to help,” Charles said loudly.
But Evelyn preferred to work alone.
For that day’s treatment, she only brought massage oil and vodka. She first wiped Jeremy’s entire leg with the vodka, rubbing until her palms were almost on fire,

But Jeremy felt nothing.
Finished
His atrophied legs, which hadn’t been moved in a long time, lay still on the bed like cold pieces of meat.
“Is it hopeless? I don’t feel anything,” Jeremy asked.
Evelyn wiped the sweat from her face and chuckled. “Even if I were a deity, I couldn’t fix it
that fast. First, I need to get your blood flowing again. Your legs haven’t been used for so long, they’re blocked up. It’s like trying to create a waterfall on a barren mountain.”
She had to create the path before the water could flow.
It’s the same principle with treatment.
Explained simply, Jeremy got it instantly.
‘Okay, Dr. Schmidt, I’ll be patient. I can tell you really know what you’re doing. You know what to do first and what comes next. My trust in you won’t be in vain.”
‘I won’t let you down,” Evelyn said seriously.
They chatted, but her hands never stopped.
She alternated between massage oil and the vodka, rubbing Jeremy’s legs until the grayish skin started to turn a faint yellow. Then she stopped.
This treatment couldn’t be rushed, so the session for the day ended there.
