Chapter 33 Jeremy’s Illness
Yvonne and Zaid had made up.
They got back to how things were in just one night.
But their reconciliation was based on the fact that they weren’t talking about Alice.
Yvonne had learned her lesson; even if she wanted to find Alice, it wasn’t the time.
So, she played it safe and didn’t mention Alice.
That morning, Zaid even made her breakfast, though most of it ended up in Victor’s stomach.
“Zaid, your cooking is so good! If my wife could cook this well, I’d wake up smiling every day,” Victor praised.
Comparing a man’s cooking to a woman’s wasn’t the best compliment, but Zaid was happy to hear it.
“If you like it, come over more often. I’ll cook for you.”
Victor’s eyes lit up. “Seriously? You’re not kidding? I could actually come often.”
“Why’s that?” Zaid asked, genuinely curious.
He was about to spill the beans when Irene kicked his leg under the table. “Why else? Victor did a great job, and his boss wants him to work in the city. That way, our families can look out for each other.”
These days, only exceptional people got transferred from the countryside to the city.
Zaid gave Victor a thumbs-up. “Nice, Victor. When you go to report to your new unit, remember to let me know, and I’ll throw a welcome dinner for you.”
“Absolutely.”
While they were talking, Yvonne was a little nervous.
The only person she couldn’t control in the house was Evelyn.
She had told Irene and Victor not to bring up Alice, but she couldn’t warn Evelyn.
Yvonne was the one in the vulnerable position now.
But her worries were unnecessary.
Evelyn didn’t say a word throughout the meal.
She simply grabbed her bag from the sofa and left without a word.
Irene had no idea about the agreement between Yvonne and Evelyn.
Seeing Zaid back and looking happy, she thought it was her chance to speak up.

She slammed the fork down on the table and sighed heavily. “What’s going on with Evelyn lately? She eats in silence and then leaves without saying goodbye. Doesn’t she see us as family?”
Just as she had hoped, Zaid frowned.
She was secretly pleased, thinking that Evelyn would be in big trouble when she came back.
But Yvonne quickly jumped in. “I asked her to buy me something. She was in such a rush she forgot to say goodbye. She knows I’m sick and still wants to help-so thoughtful.”
“This early? The supply store isn’t even open yet, right?” Irene asked, unwilling to give up.
Yvonne smoothly blocked the topic. “Yeah, I told her it wasn’t open yet, but she insisted on going. She wanted to wait at the door to get the best batch in the morning. I couldn’t stop her.”
“She means well. Let her wait, then.” Zaid looked relieved.
Evelyn isn’t so bad after all.
Yvonne had dodged a bullet and let out a huge sigh of relief.
Getting into a conflict with Evelyn at this critical moment would have been a disaster for her!
No matter what, she had to be patient for now.
But Irene, sitting at the other end of the table, was starting to get suspicious.
She now suspected that Yvonne was hiding something from her and was using her.
If she couldn’t get anything out of Yvonne, Irene thought, maybe she could at least get some answers from
that brat.
But where did she go so early in the morning?
While Irene wondered, Evelyn had already gone to the pharmacy.
She bought a bottle of massage oil.
Then she went to the supply store and picked up a bottle of vodka-the kind that would burn going down, even for an alcoholic.
The massage oil was small enough to slip into her pocket, but the vodka wasn’t, so she carried it in her
arms.
When she arrived at the station, Jeremy Cannon and Walter were already there, chatting.
Seeing Evelyn, they greeted her warmly.
Jeremy looked a little surprised and awkwardly rubbed his hands. “Dr. Schmidt, it’s great to see you, but why did you bring vodka? I don’t remember saying I like it.”
“It’s not for you to drink,” Evelyn answered. “It’s for the treatment.”

Vodka for treatment?
Not unheard of.
In rural areas where medical care was limited, high-proof liquor was often used as a disinfectant.
But he was paralyzed and had no wounds, so there was no need for disinfectant.
Was she planning to operate on him?
Seeing the look on Jeremy’s face, Evelyn knew what he was thinking.

She was both amused and exasperated. “I’m not going to operate on you. Even if you agreed, I wouldn’t dare. An infection is no joke. This is for external use.”
Jeremy nodded quickly. “Yes, yes, that makes sense. Surgery for paralysis is a complex procedure, and my house is not the right place for it.”
After chatting a bit more, the three of them headed to Jeremy’s home.
The office building near the station wasn’t far, just a two- or three-minute walk for a normal person.
But since Jeremy couldn’t use his legs, he had to push himself with his hands, so it took a while.
Evelyn and Walter instinctively slowed their pace to match Jeremy’s.
Half an hour later, they finally arrived at Jeremy’s house.
Jeremy’s son, Charles Cannon, and his wife, Sonya Cannon, were waiting inside.
The night before, Jeremy had told them that someone important would be coming today and asked them to get home early for lunch.
But after thinking it over, they still felt uneasy and decided to switch shifts so they could wait at home.
They tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep, and when they got up in the morning, Jeremy had already left.
They didn’t dare go out, worried that Jeremy might come back to an empty house.
So they just waited nervously.
Thankfully, Jeremy finally returned.
Charles rushed out. “Dad, where did you go? You scared me to death.”
“Don’t worry, I just brought Dr. Schmidt and Mr. Walter here. They don’t know the way,” Jeremy said, waving his hand.
Then he introduced everyone.
“This is Dr. Schmidt and Mr. Walter. This is my son; you can call him Charles. What do you think, isn’t he handsome? He’s the editor-in-chief of a newspaper!”

As people got older, they liked to brag about their kids, proud of the life they’d lived.

Charles didn’t care about the bragging but caught the main point of what he said. “Dr. Schmidt? Is she here to treat you?”
