Chapter 105 Perry’s Condition

Evelyn snapped back to herself and quickly explained, “I only saw it by accident. We drove by in a car, and I was just looking out the window at the scenery…
As she spoke, she almost wanted to bite her own tongue.

Why does it feel like I’m making things worse with every
word?
Philip, on the other hand, laughed.
His sharp brows and bright eyes softened, giving off a warm, sunny feeling that wrapped around Evelyn completely.
“If you want to look, I’d let you.”
Evelyn’s cheeks burned red, and she lowered her gaze, not daring to meet his eyes again.
This man is way more openly teasing than in my past life.
But… I kind of like it.
While they were still eating, a deep voice came from nearby. “Philip, so this is where you disappeared to–hiding here, dating the doctor, huh?”
Philip immediately set down his tray and gave Rob a sharp military salute.
Every move was crisp, exact, and full of strength.
“Good afternoon, Commander Thorson,” Evelyn also stood and greeted politely.
Rob’s
eyes
landed on her, thoughtful, before he said, “Ah, I remember–you’re Rowan’s star apprentice, Evelyn, right?”
Evelyn nodded. “You have a great memory, Commander Thorson.”
That little compliment clearly pleased him. He reached out and patted Philip’s shoulder.
“You’ve picked a good one. Rowan’s top apprentices aren’t ordinary. And she’s a doctor, too. Be careful, or she might pull a scalpel on you.”
It was a joke, but Philip nodded seriously and answered, “Yes, sir.”
Rob chuckled. “He’s one of my best apprentices too. You two really make a perfect match.”
Getting praise like that from someone so important was a real joy.

Back at the mess hall, Evelyn couldn’t stop smiling.

Rowan noticed and asked curiously, “What’s got you grinning like you just won the lottery?”
“Commander Thorson said you call me your star apprentice,” Evelyn answered lightly.
Rowan didn’t deny it. He lifted his chin proudly. “Of course. I don’t take useless apprentices, do
I?”
When Evelyn smiled even wider, he frowned a little.
Stepping closer, he warned, “That’s just for show. Don’t let it go to your head, got it?”
Rowan had always been strict with her, almost like a stern father.
But medicine was serious work.
Evelyn listened carefully, nodding each time.
After lunch, Rowan told her to do a headcount before heading back to the hospital.
While checking, Evelyn noticed one person was missing.
It was Myrtle.
“Has anyone seen her?” Evelyn asked.
Everyone looked around in confusion and shook their heads.
Strange. Myrtle always likes sticking close to the group. Now it feels like she’s hiding on purpose.
“Should we go look for her?” someone asked.
Evelyn shook her head. “There are restricted areas all over this base. If you walk into one by mistake, you’ll get punished. Is that worth it?”
The person stuck out their tongue nervously and backed down.
“So, what, we just wait?” they asked again.
But the ride back to the hospital was hours long. If they delayed, the next shift would be exhausted,
After thinking, Evelyn had an idea.
She told one person, “Go ask at the broadcast station. Have them announce for Myrtle to meet us at the camp gate.”

That way, the whole base would hear it, and Myrtle would have to come back.
Evelyn then turned and went to find Philip..
She asked him where Perry was.
Philip said Perry was sick today and resting in the dorm. He offered to take her there.
Since it was drill time, no one else would be in the dorms. Evelyn agreed.
Even before she reached the door, Evelyn could already hear voices inside.
A man and a woman.
Exactly what she expected.

She glanced at Philip and whispered, “Why don’t you step aside? I’ll get the girl out first. I don’t want anyone to misunderstand.”
It was 1983, and gender boundaries were strict.
Besides, Myrtle wasn’t Perry’s girlfriend. If word spread, she’d never live it down at the hospital.
Myrtle had also been kind to her lately, so Evelyn truly wanted to protect her.
Philip nodded. “I’ll talk to Perry later. You just get her out and return to the group. Be careful on the road back.”
“You too,” Evelyn blurted out.
Then quickly added, “I mean… be careful during training. Don’t get hurt.”
“The charm you gave me will keep me safe,” Philip said calmly.
After he left, Evelyn gently knocked on the dorm door.
She and Philip had been talking quietly, so Myrtle and Perry hadn’t noticed.
The sudden knock made them both jump.
They were afraid of what people would think if they found a girl alone with a guy in the dorm.
“It’s me, Myrtle,” Evelyn called softly.
After a long pause, the door cracked open. Half of Myrtle’s face appeared, pale and panicked.
Inside, Perry sat on the bed, looking weak, dark circles making his eyes stand out.

“Dr. Schmidt, I–I just wanted to check on him. I heard he was sick,” Myrtle stammered, fiddling with her sleeves like a guilty child.
Perry spoke up for her. “We didn’t do anything, Dr. Schmidt. She’s a good girl–please don’t make things hard for her.”
It was up to Evelyn.
If she brought Myrtle back now and said she’d been in a man’s dorm alone, rumors would spread nonstop.
Looking at their earnest faces, Evelyn sighed. “Do I really look that mean to you?”
“So …
you won’t tell anyone she was here, right?” Perry asked carefully.
Evelyn nodded, stepped inside, and sat by the bed. “On the way, she mentioned she was worried about you. Since you’re sick, of course, she came to check. It’s not like we expect you to crawl to the entrance to meet her.”
That would obviously make no sense.
Seeing that Evelyn wasn’t going to expose them, Perry finally relaxed.
He gave her a grateful look. “Thank you, Dr. Schmidt.”
“Save it,” Evelyn waved him off. She grabbed a book from the table, set it on the bed, and said, “Give me your hand.”
Resting his hand on the book, she took his pulse.
Then she checked his tongue and eyelids.
Both were very pale.
And hidden under that paleness, there was a faint dark shade.
“You’re badly anemic, you know that?” Evelyn said.
