Chapter 104 Sharing a Can
Evelyn’s hands shook a little, which was rare for her.
She kept missing Philip’s vein with the needle.
“Take your time. No hurry,” Philip said softly, completely calm.
Evelyn took a few deep breaths before she finally got the needle in.
For the checkup, she needed to take two tubes of blood.
But before finishing the first one, something went wrong again.

She thought the needle might’ve poked through the vein wall, so instead of filling the tube, it just sat in the muscle.
A bent needle wasn’t a big deal, but tearing the blood vessel wall was.
Even blood from a slow vein could still be dangerous.
Since she couldn’t fix it alone, she called Rowan over.
With his decades of experience, Rowan saw the problem right away.
He patted Philip’s arm. “Relax. Your veins are tightening up–that’s why it’s hard to draw.”
Then he gave a half–smile. “You two are really a pair–one too nervous to poke, the other too nervous to bleed.”
The mood instantly turned awkward.
Myrtle couldn’t stand it and pulled Rowan aside. “Dr. Cook, stop hanging around! You’re too old for this–it’s embarrassing.”
“What? You think I’m a third wheel? And what’s embarrassing about this? I’m not the one dating in public,” Rowan grumbled.
Still, Myrtle dragged him away.
The blood draw was tough, but eventually, both tubes were filled.
Philip bent his elbow, pressed on the spot, and asked Evelyn, “When do we leave? Want lunch together?”
Come to think of it, they had hardly ever eaten together.

But Evelyn shook her head. “I don’t know. I came with the hospital team, so I’ll follow mentor’s plans.”

“Then wait for me,” Philip said, standing up and leaving.
Since they were on a base full of male soldiers, Evelyn didn’t follow him. She stayed in the room and helped Myrtle check a few more recruits.
Not long after, Philip came back.
He was holding an enamel basin.
Myrtle’s eyes went wide. “Dr. Schmidt, what is your boyfriend doing? He finally sees you, and he brings a basin?”
She had no clue what it meant, but Evelyn knew–and she accepted it happily.
Earlier, she had joked about winning the first–place prize among the recruits. And now Philip had really brought it.
She held the basin like it was a treasure, not wanting to let go.
Myrtle was stunned. Why is she so thrilled over a basin?
Are women in love really that easy to please?
Even if I end up with Perry, I know it’ll take more than just a basin to make me that happy.
Still, Evelyn was here for work. She couldn’t dump everything on the others.
So, after taking the basin, she left Philip waiting nearby and continued lining up recruits.
By the time all the checkups were done, it was almost lunch.
Rob insisted they stay. The base was an hour from the hospital, and going back for lunch would leave no time to rest.
He clapped Rowan’s shoulder. “Dr. Cook, these new soldiers worked hard. We can’t overwork them too–otherwise it’d be like the old days when people were uncivilized, right?”
He glanced at Evelyn. “Fine by me. I’ve been craving the base’s stew anyway.”
So with lunch decided, they all packed up and headed to the mess hall.
The huge hall had long benches and tables, but it was empty except for the cook.
Myrtle looked let down. “What, we’re eating alone? Not with the soldiers?”

Rob chuckled. “That was on purpose. Those boys eat like wolves–you’d be scared off.”

At the base, eating fast was the rule. You never knew when a whistle would blow for assembly.
The faster you ate, the more food you got.
If the soldiers were there, the hall would be packed and noisy.
Because Rob had invited the medical staff to stay, the kitchen staff treated them well, even adding extra meat to their plates.
Evelyn, remembering Philip’s lunch invitation, grabbed two more pieces of bread and a spare set of utensils.
Quietly, she slipped out with her tray.
But before she could look for Philip, he found her first.
They met halfway in the hall–Evelyn carrying her tray, Philip holding a few cans.
These were special military rations. As a captain, Philip only got three cans a month.
He had saved them for two months, so now he had six, and he brought them all to Evelyn.
No matter what, Philip always thought of her first.
If he couldn’t give her something now, he’d save it for later.
They smiled at each other and found a quiet corner to eat together.
Evelyn opened a can of Spam, but Philip stopped her.
“What’s wrong?” she asked. “Is it poisoned?”
Her mind flashed back to Yvonne’s case, and the thought slipped out.
Philip froze. “Someone poisoned you?”
He knew Evelyn never joked about things like that.
But Evelyn quickly waved it off. “No, I was kidding.”
She switched back to the food. “Then why won’t you let me open it?”
“Take it back with you. Eat it later,” Philip said.
Because if they ate together now, he’d naturally take a few bites.

And he wanted to save all of it for her.

But Evelyn argued, “If you gave me the can, then it’s mine. I want to eat it now. If you stop me, that means you didn’t really want to give it.”
Philip was caught off guard and gave in, letting her open it.
The pink piece of spam sat on their plates.
Evelyn pushed it toward him. “You should eat more. It’s a protein and helps with healing. Give it time, and the cut on your waist will fade.”
“You saw my wound?” Philip asked quietly, eyes narrowing.
“Of course. I saw it this morning,” she replied without thinking.
Then she froze, realizing that she had just walked right into Philip’s trap.
