Chapter 102 Rowan’s Little Tricks 

Rowan was in his office, carefully writing down notes for his patient rounds.

When he saw Evelyn and Myrtle come in together, he finally lifted his tired softly, “What’s going on? Why are both of you here?” 

eyes and asked 

Myrtle, even more excited than Evelyn, jumped in first. “Dr. Cook, we’re going to the unit tomorrow to help with physical exams. Can Dr. Schmidt join too?” 

“Of course,” Rowan nodded. 

But before Evelyn could feel happy, his tone changed. “Why go to the unit for a physical if you’re supposed to help Jeremy from Ward 3 pack up for discharge tomorrow?” 

“Jeremy doesn’t leave until the afternoon. The unit exam is only in the morning. It won’t interfere,” Evelyn explained. 

But Rowan didn’t look convinced. 

He set his record book aside, gave her a serious look, and said quietly, “If you’re not telling me the truth, I won’t let you go.” 

“Isn’t that abusing your power?” Evelyn bit her lip. 

Even Myrtle couldn’t hold back anymore. “Dr. Schmidt, you still haven’t told him, have you?” 

“Told him what?” Rowan caught it even though Myrtle’s voice was tiny. 

Seeing Evelyn wasn’t denying anything, Myrtle continued, “That she has a boyfriend.” 

“So what if she has a boyfriend? I know.” Rowan snorted, acting like it was nothing. 

That was normal–after all, that guy had stayed with his injured comrade before, so running into him during rounds was bound to happen. 

Wait a second… 

Rowan suddenly realized why Evelyn wanted to join the physical exam team. 

“Ahem, if you want to go, then go. More people make the work faster,” Rowan finally agreed. 

He actually liked Philip, so he didn’t mind helping. 

As for adding one more doctor to the team, Rowan could handle that.

The next morning, while it was still dark, everyone boarded a bus heading to the military unit. 

The young nurses were buzzing with nerves,,shy but thrilled at the thought of seeing a whole bunch of good–looking soldiers. 

“Dr. Schmidt, why aren’t you excited? Don’t you want to see your boyfriend?” Myrtle teased. 

Evelyn kept her face calm. 

She pressed her lips into a small smile and said, “I’m mainly going to help with the exams. Seeing him is just a bonus. Besides, there are so many soldiers. I might not even bump into him.” 

On the outside, she looked steady, but her palms were sweating. 

What will Philip think if I suddenly show up? 

Evelyn was always calm in life, but when it came to Philip, she turned into a nervous girl. 

She seemed innocent, a little silly, and full of hope–more like a schoolkid than a young 

woman. 

Myrtle, brimming with confidence, patted her shoulder and winked. “Don’t worry. I’ve got a plan.” 

But when Evelyn asked what it was, Myrtle just kept it a secret, grinning mysteriously. 

Evelyn gave up asking. 

Half an hour later, whatever “plan” she had would show itself anyway. 

The unit was built out on the edge of Southville, in the forest. That way, their training wouldn’t bother the locals, and there was lots of open space. 

As the bus rolled through the thick woods, Myrtle shivered. 

Leaning closer to Evelyn, she whispered, “Dr. Schmidt, don’t you think this place feels creepy? As soon as we drove in, I got chills. Look–goosebumps everywhere.” 

“It’s just the heavy trees. Plus, it’s your first time here. You’re just imagining things,” Evelyn said. 

But Rowan gave a cold snort. “Heh, you know nothing. Do you know why you feel that way?” 

“Why?” 

All the young nurses turned to look at him.

Rowan cleared his throat and began in a serious tone. “Before the military unit was built, this place was called the Lost Woods. Anyone who went inside never came out. They’d get lost and 

die in there. 

“People who lived nearby said they heard crying at night–the ghosts of those trapped souls. Everyone moved away, and the forest became abandoned. 

“Later, someone thought of building the unit here. With so many soldiers, their strong energy would keep the ghosts down. People could enter safely. But … ” 

He paused on purpose, scanning their scared faces. 

Myrtle, half scared and half curious, squeezed Evelyn’s arm. “But what?” 

“Because soldiers keep the balance. But now, with so many young women here, the female energy is strong. The spirits might be drawn to it, looking for someone to replace them.” 

As he spoke, Rowan suddenly pressed his hand to Myrtle’s head. “Don’t look out the window. There could be strange eyes staring back.” 

The nurses couldn’t take it anymore. They screamed, the bus filling with noise and panic. 

Evelyn was the only one calm, struggling to pull her arm free from Myrtle’s death grip. 

It was starting to hurt, and she was worried Myrtle might cut her blood circulation, and she’d have to chop it off. 

“Dr. Cook …” Evelyn said, half annoyed, half amused. 

Rowan just snorted. “When I told this story to Twix, he never flinched. You girls are way too jumpy.” 

“What do you mean?” Myrtle asked, her voice trembling. “Dr. Cook … were you serious?” 

“Of course not. I was joking,” Rowan said, flicking her forehead. “I just wanted to mess with you. Southville doesn’t have ghosts. And it’s chilly this early–you’re bound to get goosebumps dressed like that.” 

After scaring the nurses silly, Rowan went back to his normal, serious self. 

By then, the bus had reached the first checkpoint outside the unit. 

Further ahead, the wide training grounds came into view, where soldiers were already doing their morning drills. 

Autumn was on its way, but the men were bare–chested, their bronzed skin shining with sweat.
