Chapter 101 The Army’s Physical Exam
Evelyn’s wooden bed was old–fashioned.
When you pulled back the quilt and the waterproof mat, all you saw were wooden slats with little gaps in between.
Acting calm, Evelyn lifted the blanket from the end of the bed, making a small opening to check things out.
“If you mess up with that knife, you’ll never see this handsome face again.” A low voice rang out from under the bed.
Hearing that, Evelyn got so mad that she tossed the box cutter away.
She quickly shut the windows and doors tight, then turned back.
And there he was–sitting right on the edge of her bed, whistling like he had no worries.
This guy was like a walking firecracker.
Evelyn snapped, slapping her hand over his mouth. “Can you stop? There are people downstairs. You trying to get me killed?”
Austin gave her big, sad puppy eyes, all innocent and quiet under her hand.
That look threw Evelyn off, so she let him go, lowering her voice and asking, annoyed, “Didn’t you leave? Why are you in my house again?”
“I got the day off. Thought I’d come see you,” Austin said.
A day off?
“You guys get weekends now? Work five days, rest two?” Evelyn laughed.
Austin’s shoulders dropped. “I haven’t even been to the arcade in forever. I told you last time—I messed up, and they put me in this program to ‘fix‘ me. Who knows when I’ll be done? If I hadn’t behaved well lately, I wouldn’t even have today off.”
“Is that so?” Evelyn wasn’t impressed, rolling her eyes. “Then keep it up. Try to be a normal person again.”
“What? It’s not like I was thrown in jail,” Austin quickly said.
Evelyn just rolled her eyes harder. “If you were in jail, you wouldn’t be getting days off. I know that much.”

“Fair enough.” He smirked, slipping back into his cocky self, patting the spot beside him. “Come sit.”
Evelyn didn’t move. “Just say what you came for. I’m busy.”
When she didn’t sit, Austin went straight for threats. “If you don’t sit down, I’ll yell, and then let’s see how you explain a guy in
your room.”
Sure, dating after college was normal. But sneaking a guy into her room without her parents knowing?
Even if nothing happened, Yvonne would twist it into a story.
And with Alice’s drama still fresh, who knew how Zaid might react?
With no choice, Evelyn sat down, leaving two fists of space between them.
Austin didn’t care. He leaned in closer. “Evelyn, you know why I got today off?”
“Because you begged,” Evelyn shot back.
“Nope. It’s because I kept thinking of you. I wanted to see you, so I worked harder. My mentor saw that and gave me a break. Evelyn, you’re the reason I keep going.”
Here he went again, spouting nonsense.
“Alright, enough. Just leave already. I’ve got to get back to the hospital. No time for your crap.” Evelyn rolled her eyes, opened the window, and got ready to kick him out.
Austin pouted. “You’ve got a sharp tongue but a soft heart. Once I’m gone, you’ll miss me. Right?”
“I wish you’d leave faster. And don’t come back,” Evelyn said firmly.
“You said that last time too. Even threatened to put mouse traps on the window, but you didn’t.” Austin thought he had proof she didn’t mean what she said.
But Evelyn shook her head. “Wrong. I really did put mouse traps. But since I was away at my internship, and you swore you wouldn’t come, I packed them up, Look, they’re over there in the corner.”
Austin followed her finger and saw them: a bunch of old, rusty traps stacked in the corner.
Southville’s damp air had rusted the iron, leaving a reddish layer on top.
“See? I mean it. I don’t want you sneaking in here. And I already told you–I’ve got a boyfriend. If you keep this up, we won’t even be friends anymore.”

She got it all out in one breath, and the air in the room grew heavy.
Not sure what else to say, Evelyn turned away. “I’m going to the bathroom.”
When she came back, Austin was gone.
She even bent to check under the bed—nothing.

But the window was wide open, and the mouse traps from the corner were now sitting on the sill.
Looks like he really left.
Evelyn lowered her eyes, pulled the storage box out from under the bed, and went back to packing.
Austin was like a gust of wind–rushing in fast, and rushing out just as fast.
Evelyn didn’t think much of it.
To her, he was just a friend at most, and sneaking in through the window was all on him.
Once she was done packing, she left the Schmidt Residence.
She grabbed a cab back to the hospital, where Myrtle was huddled with some nurses, whispering like they had a secret.
Their cheeks were pink, like the sky lit with sunset colors.
“What’s
got you all worked up?” Evelyn asked curiously.
Myrtle glanced at the others, then hooked her arm through Evelyn’s and whispered like it was top secret, “Dr. Schmidt, are you going tomorrow?”
“Going where?” Evelyn frowned.
“The army’s physical exam. I heard they’re picking five doctors and fifteen nurses–just blood pressure, blood draws, basic stuff.”
Physicals happen every day in the hospital. So why are they acting like this one’s special?
“Remember the soldier who broke a bone last time? He’s on my blood–draw list!” Myrtle said, super excited.
Evelyn understood now.
Didn’t matter when or where–good–looking soldiers would always be every girl’s crush.

She was about to say she wasn’t interested, but then she thought of Philip.
If she went to help with the exams, there was a good chance she’d see him.
“Where do I sign up? I want in too,” Evelyn said.
Myrtle lit up, tugging her straight toward Rowan’s office. “Dr. Cook’s in charge, and you’re his favorite. You’ll definitely get a spot.”
The two girls laughed and chatted, not even bothering to put their stuff down, heading straight to Rowan’s office.
