Yvonne was in a great mood and cooked an especially big, fancy lunch.
Just as she put the chicken soup on the table, Zaid came home.

While changing his shoes at the door, he sniffed the air. “Wow, something smells amazing in
here.”
Still wearing her apron, Yvonne hurried over to him, helping take his briefcase with a practiced smile. “Honey, look who’s back.”
Only then did Zaid notice Evelyn standing by the table.
Since it had been a while, he felt a sudden rush of emotion seeing her.
“Evelyn! You’re home! Is it a holiday today?” Zaid asked warmly, trying to look like a caring, proud father.
“Yeah, it’s a holiday. Thought I’d stop by and pick up some fall clothes,” Evelyn said softly, her eyes down, avoiding his gaze. Her lashes trembled as she spoke.
Truthfully, she didn’t feel much for this father of hers anymore.
Or maybe it was better to say whatever love she once had had slowly faded away in her last life.
Now, “Dad” was only a word to her–nothing more.
Still, Zaid nodded in quiet satisfaction. He walked over and gently patted her shoulder. “You look thinner. Not eating well at the hospital?”
“Maybe just tired. There are lots of patients,” Yvonne quickly answered for her.
That much was true, Hospitals ran in shifts, and exhaustion was normal.
Zaid thought for a moment, then pulled out 20 dollars, handing it to Evelyn. “Buy yourself something nutritious. You need it.”
From the timing, it was clear he had just gotten some money from Bill.
Since it was her grandfather’s honey, Evelyn didn’t hesitate. She thanked him politely and slipped it into her bag,
She almost laughed to herself.
In her past life, she had been harmed by Alice and Yvonne for over 20 dollars.
But now, Zaid tossed her the same amount, like pocket change.

Yvonne caught the small, fleeting smile on Evelyn’s lips and felt a strange chill in her chest.
She tried to figure out what it meant, but before she could, Evelyn’s face was back to normal.
She thought she had imagined it.
Shaking the thought, she went back to her role. “Honey, wash your hands–lunch is ready. Evelyn hasn’t been home in forever. Don’t let her go hungry.”
After washing up, the three of them sat down to eat.
Zaid chatted lightly, looking very content.
Then, out of nowhere, he turned to Yvonne. “Any news on your end?”
Though his tone was casual, Yvonne froze, almost dropping her utensils.
She lowered her head and mumbled, “Not yet. I’ll let you know if there is.”
“What news?” Evelyn asked.
“Nothing important–just adult matters,” Yvonne jumped in quickly. “Your work is busy enough. Don’t worry about it. Just rest, or your dad’s gonna worry.”
If she hadn’t been so quick to cover it up, Evelyn might not have thought twice.
But because of that deliberate tone, she instantly understood.
They were looking for Alice.
During her internship, Yvonne hadn’t just schemed against her behind her back. She had also been slowly working on Zaid.
At first, Zaid, with his pride, had been stubborn.
But Yvonne must have said something to make him change his mind.
She’s really a tough opponent, Evelyn thought.
Still, since Yvonne clearly wanted to hide it, Evelyn didn’t push.
It wasn’t worth ruining her bigger plans over something small.
She ate quietly, thinking about her next steps.
Soon, the smell of medicine drifted in from the kitchen.

Zaid, who had eaten his fill, wrinkled his nose in dislike. “What’s that smell? It’s awful.”

“It’s Evelyn’s medicine,” Yvonne explained, telling him the whole story.
Zaid frowned. “The hospital isn’t very clean then. They disinfect every day, but eczema? Guess Brookhaven Hospital can’t compare to the city one.”

He had been planning to take Evelyn to Brookhaven Hospital that afternoon, imagining how proud he’d feel hearing the senior doctors praise her.
But now, he had changed his mind quickly.
He didn’t want to catch anything.
Health mattered more than pride.
After a pause, he reassured her. “The old doctor near the market is really good. When I was a kid. Ihad scabies, and he cured it with just one prescription. Don’t worry. Just take the medicine on time.”
As he spoke, his hand moved as if to pat Evelyn’s shoulder again, but remembering her rash, he pulled back awkwardly and scratched his head instead.
Evelyn noticed it all.
But she felt no sadness, no anger. Just calm. Her face gave nothing away.
As before, “Dad” was only a title.
Nothing more.
Yvonne watched from the side.
She had brewed the medicine partly to show kindness, partly so Zaid would back words.
That way, Evelyn would trust the old doctor’s diagnosis completely.
And once she believed it, the hidden poison could spread better.
Thinking about it, Yvonne felt a secret thrill.
She was so pleased she even scratched her own neck.
I’d better keep some distance from Evelyn. Just looking at her made my skin itch.
After finishing the medicine, Evelyn went upstairs to pack her fall clothes.

As expected, Yvonne had taken care of everything.
Evelyn glanced at it once, then looked away and went back to folding her clothes.

Brookhaven Hospital was built on a mountainside to care for soldiers nearby, so all the rooms were well ventilated. In the city, women could still wear short skirts, but here, people already had to bundle up.
She took out a few thick sweaters and planned to grab her heavy coats from the storage box under the bed.
But just as she bent down, she sensed something strange.
Keeping her face calm, she reached for the art knife on her desk and slowly sat back down on the bed.
