Chapter 6

Chapter 6

When I woke up, my whole body felt like it had been torn apart and carelessly reassembled.

Every inch of my skin screamed with pain.

White ceiling, the smell of disinfectant, cold tubes piercing my body-everything reminded me of one fact-

I was still alive.

I struggled to move my eyes and saw my brother keeping vigil by my bedside.

Seeing I was awake, he immediately leaned down, his voice thick with concern.

‘Gia, how are you feeling?”

I opened my mouth-my throat was parched like fire, no sound coming out.

I lifted my hand, wanting to touch my lower abdomen.

My movement was gentle, but it pulled at wounds all over my body, making me gasp in pain.

‘Dante…” I finally managed to squeeze out some sound. “My body…”

Dante’s eyes flickered away. He gripped my hand, his palm burning hot.

Your life is saved.” He spoke word by word, struggling to get it out. “But the doctor said the frostbite and surgery damaged you too severely. You might have trouble having children in the future.”

I didn’t scream or become hysterical. I just lay there staring at the ceiling.

Tears simply fell beyond my control, drop by drop, sliding from the corners of my eyes into the pillow.

Just then, the hospital room door burst open.

Kai charged in, disheveled and wild.

His beard was scraggly, his eyes bloodshot, his designer suit wrinkled like a rag.

“Gia!

Seeing me, like seeing salvation itself, he rushed straight toward the bed.

Dante’s men immediately stepped forward, restraining him from both sides.

Chapter 6

“Get out!” Dante’s fury finally exploded, the cold in his eyes nearly freezing everyone solid.

But Kai fought desperately against their hold, then dropped to his knees with a thud, prostrating himself

before my bed.

“Gia… Gia…”

Like a madman, he knocked his forehead against the cold floor again and again, making dull thuds.

“Don’t throw him out.”

Dante looked at me in confusion, but I just calmly watched the man kneeling on the ground.

I wanted to see just how far he could take this performance.

With my permission, Kai immediately crawled on his knees to my bedside, grabbing my hand and sobbing uncontrollably.

“Gia, I’m sorry! I’m so sorry! I didn’t know it would be this serious!”

His tears dripped onto my hand-scalding, but they made me feel sick.

‘I asked those guys, they all said people get dumped on mountains like that all the time, it’s just to scare them. I asked the doctor-he said with your strong constitution, you’d be fine…”

He rambled through his explanations incoherently.

So it wasn’t a moment of impulse-it was premeditated. He’d even calculated my physical condition into it.

He just wanted to scare me.

To use my life to scare me.

‘It was all Scarlett! She’s the one who whispered in my ear! I already kicked her out! I swear I’ll never see

her again!”

He started frantically passing the buck, trying to wash his hands of everything.

“Gia, you have to believe me-I love you! Forgive me this once, please? I’m begging you…”

He cried so genuinely, with such regret, like he really was a husband who’d made a mistake but deeply loved his wife.

I looked at him,

my thoughts uncontrollably drifting back eight years.

Chapter 6

Back then, Kai was still a penniless student wearing shirts washed until they were almost transparent, but

his eyes held stubborn defiance.

At some fancy business cocktail party, he was there as an intern getting hassled by a group of rich kids. I was the one who stepped up and got him out of that mess.

From then on, he pursued me passionately.

He’d save up several days’ worth of meal money just to buy me a single rose I’d mentioned in passing.

He’d show up downstairs at my place every single day without fail, just to catch a glimpse of me.

For me, this guy who’d never touched a spatula learned to cook, burning his hands full of blisters, but still

serving me a plate of charcoal-black pancakes with the brightest smile.

He’d hold my hand, eyes shining like stars, telling me over and over: “Gia, I’ll be good to you for the rest of my life.”

His persistence, his drive, his undisguised ambition-they all captivated me completely.

ignored my brother’s strong opposition, dismissed all the Romano family’s warnings, and married him

without hesitation.

thought I was marrying love.

Turns out I just married into an elaborate con.

looked at this tear-streaked face in front of me, watching it slowly overlap with the clear-eyed boy from my nemories, then slowly separate again.
