Chapter 8
Back in the house, my head was spinning with a mess of emotions.
Chris came over and leaned down, trying to comfort me. “Just forget it, Mia. Owen’s not worth you getting upset over.”
I shook my head. “No… I’m not thinking about him.”
I looked up and met Chris‘ eyes. It finally hit me–he and Owen were brothers, and they had the same beautiful eyes. But his were the eyes that had glowed like the moonlight that night. He was the one I should have loved all along.
My nose got all tingly, and before I knew it, I was crying.
“I’m such an idiot, Chris. We actually met ten years ago, didn’t we?”
Chris gave me a gentle smile. “No. It was even earlier than that.”
I froze, totally stunned.
“You probably don’t remember. It was ages ago. We were in the same kindergarten. Back then, I was quiet and didn’t talk much. The other kids would pick on me. They’d call me a mute and steal the cookies and fruit out of my lunchbox. But you’d always
stand up for me and protect me. You even shared your food with me. I think I’ve had a thing for you ever since.”
My brain went blank. I never would’ve remembered that in a million years if he hadn’t brought it up. It was forever ago.
Had he been looking out for me this whole time?
I was at a loss, unsure how to handle a love that was so long overdue. All I could do was fall into his arms and say his name over
and over.
“Chris… Chris… I’m sorry, I didn’t remember you. I even got you mixed up with someone else. I’m such an airhead…”
“It’s okay, Mia. We’re married now. No one’s ever going to come between us again.”
Never again.
Later, Chris brought in the world’s leading doctors to treat Mom. She finally got better and could get out of bed for short periods
to breathe some fresh air.
I hadn’t heard a peep from Owen since he showed up that day. Chris said he actually tried to come back a few times, but his
bodyguards sent him packing.
The next time I saw Owen, he was all over the headlines.
Monica went insane and stabbed him to death when he refused to own up to getting her pregnant. She was arrested pretty
quickly. By then, she had lost it and was just spouting gibberish no one could make heads or tails of. What awaited her was a
lifetime behind bars.

Meanwhile, Chris and I were busy planning our honeymoon, hoping to take one last adventure before we had a baby.
Everything in the past was water under the bridge. And as for the future, we had all the time in the world to figure it out.
