Chapter 6
“Chloe, what are you doing here?”
The project host glanced at me, then at her, looking visibly uncomfortable.
“Ms. Carter… why are you here again? Didn’t Mr. Miller already assign this project to Ms. Adams?”
My head buzzed, as if I’d misheard.
“When did that happen?”
“On the very day I joined,” Chloe said, strutting over in her heels, her smugness radiating.
“I told you before, Sophia-your work can be replaced by me at any moment.”
I fixed her with a cold smile.
“Keep dreaming.”
Right there, I called my secretary, only to hear her firm confirmation:
‘Ms. Carter, that day you seemed upset, so I didn’t tell you. But Mr. Miller specifically instructe us to transfer the Silver Creek Project to Chloe.”
Anger surged. I went straight to find Ethan.
He was lounging in a private New York bar lounge, tailored suit crisp, legs crossed as he sippec
nis drink.
‘Well, well. Sophia Carter-so proud and untouchable-actually came to find me.”
He smirked. “And all for work. Pathetic.”
got straight to the point.
‘You know exactly how important the Silver Creek Project is to me.”
His tone was mocking, every word dipped in disdain.
‘So what if I do? Aren’t you the one who prides herself on being stronger than any man?
Lose this project, you’ll just pull out another ace from up your sleeve, won’t you?”
stared at him in disbelief.
He knew how much I’d sacrificed for this-how many nights I’d stayed up working, how much effort I’d poured in.
And yet he treated the project like some cheap toy, tossing it to Chloe, an intern who didn’t know the first thing about it.
That night, humiliated, I walked out of the lounge.
Ethan had deliberately set obstacles in my way.
But I wasn’t going to bow down.
I sought out the Silver Creek Project hosts myself to negotiate directly.
But Chloe appeared, smirking.
“Sophia, what do you think Ethan will say if he finds out you tried to kill me just to steal back this
project?”
A chill shot through me.
The next second, Chloe deliberately staggered backward-pretending I had shoved her toward a running cement mixer.
Ethan rushed over, his face pale with fear, grabbing her arm at the last second.
“Chloe! Are you out of your mind?”
Tears streamed down her cheeks as she clung to him, trembling.
‘It was Sophia! She tried to push me in. If you hadn’t pulled me back, I’d be nothing but ground-up flesh right now…”
Ethan stiffened, holding her tight.
Then he turned a cold, cutting gaze on me.
‘Sophia, I thought you were just a workaholic. Cold, maybe, but not malicious.
never imagined you’d try to kill someone for a deal.”
His eyes were like ice, his voice full of bitter disappointment,
as if he’d finally given up on me completely.
bit down hard on my lip, swallowing the humiliation.
Truth was, that scene had rattled me too.
hadn’t thought Chloe would go this far-using such a desperate trick just to beat me.
And then a calm, cultured voice came from behind me.
Whether Sophia had any intent to kill can be cleared up by simply checking the surveillance. Mr. Miller, I suggest you don’t frame the wrong person.”
Slowly, I turned my head.
There stood Daniel Hart, dressed in a white suit, arms folded, watching with cool amusement.
n his hand, a portable surveillance device glinted.
Perhaps Miss Adams didn’t realize,” he said, voice sharp,
but this construction site is covered wall-to-wall with cameras for safety.
Her little performance? Caught in full HD.”
