Jaxson paused, his brow furrowing.“I wouldn’t have.”
A chill ran down my spine.
I’d seen the scandals surrounding his illegitimate child; she knew how to manipulate words.
“If it was you with Caroline, and her son…”
“Charlotte,” Jaxson interrupted flatly.“Let’s not involve others in what’s between us.”
Involved?
Was he afraid of the repercussions of his affair with Caroline before the divorce was finalized?
My clenched hand relaxed.
My tone was indifferent.
“Mr. Hamilton, relax, I’ll be out of your hair soon enough. Consider this my advance blessing on your… match made in heaven.”
I turned to leave.
My arm was grabbed.
I looked at Jaxson.
Was it my imagination, or was his usual composure… flustered?
“You said…”
“Uncle!”
Collin ran towards Jaxson, throwing himself around his legs.
Jaxson seemed to snap out of it, releasing me and putting his hand on Collin’s head.
His
eyes were full of affection.“How did you come down?”
Collin said, “I have been waiting for you with my mom for a long time, worried about you, so I came down to find you!”
Caroline stepped beside Jaxson, her eyes sharp, fixed on me.
“Dr. Sutton is here too, why didn’t I see Mr. Steward? Isn’t he accompanying you?”
She’d seen Jaxson grab my arm.
Her eyes burned with hatred.
The man who once loved her was seduced by a woman like me!
