Collin ran ahead, his laughter echoing, while Caroline and Jaxson strolled leisurely into the
restaurant.
It had to be this restaurant!
Caroline, in a custom–made purple dress, high heels, and impeccable makeup, walked arm–in–arm with Jaxson, the picture of a perfect couple.
Despite expecting this, a dull ache pierced my heart.
Six years I spent, never able to stand so openly beside Jaxson, while Caroline achieved it in half a
year…
Perhaps those six years… I’d delayed him.
Jaxson’s gaze shifted, landing on us by the window.
He slowed, his brow furrowing slightly.
Caroline noticed, following his gaze.
An imperceptible coldness flickered in her eyes.
She took Jaxson’s arm.
“Isn’t that Dr. Sutton and Mr. Steward? Jaxson, are they on a date? Shall we go over and say hello?”
Our eyes met.
Jaxson’s face remained impassive, as if I were a stranger.
He said lightly, “Let’s eat first.”
Caroline’s smile held a triumphant glint as she followed Jaxson, glancing back at me.
Her look was a challenge, a victory.
I was speechless.
“Charlotte, may I ask, what is your relationship with Mr. Hamilton?”
Reynald asked, finally voicing the question that had been hanging in the air.
As an observer, it was clear there was something complicated between us.
I came to my senses, pursing my lips.“I… have nothing to do with him.”
Reynald saw the hidden truth, but didn’t press further.
As we parted outside, I called out, “Reynald, there’s something else I’d like to ask for your help with. I’d like to treat you to a meal sometime.”
