Chapter 32
With Jaxson’s personality, it was impossible for outsiders to find fault in his marriage.
The secrecy was for his convenience.
Even if he married Caroline in the future, giving Collin a name, it would be legitimate, and Caroline wouldn’t interfere.
Another wave of bitterness washed over me.
After a brief silence, he picked up a tissue, wiping his mouth.“There’s a clinical trial research meeting on robot surgery next week. You take Caroline with you.”
I was stunned.“I take her?”
The conference was the country’s premier medical conference, attended by chief physicians.
Caroline, a figurehead director relying on Jaxson’s influence at Boston Medical Center… he knew what the conference meant, yet he suggested I bring her? Was he really trying to promote her?
He lifted his eyelids, gazing at me.“What, unwilling?”
“Why don’t you find someone else to take her?” I didn’t say no, but my reluctance was clear.
His eyes
darkened. “I know you have opinions about her, but this time, it’s not up to you.”
“Jaxson, you want to promote her, right?” I took a deep breath and finally asked.
He was silent a moment.“And if I am?”
And if I am?
As if it were so simple.
But what could I do?
Seeing my pale face, his lips thinned, his tone softening slightly.
“Relax. She won’t threaten your position.”
*Or your place as Mrs. Hamilton*.
He didn’t say the unspoken part.
Position… he meant my standing as lead surgeon, didn’t he?
I smiled, setting down. my fork.
“Don’t worry, I won’t keep her waiting too long.”
I’d be leaving soon anyway.

I didn’t even want the title of “Mrs. Hamilton” anymore.
Status? Reputation?
None of it mattered.
I pushed back my chair and walked away.
He watched me go, fingers tapping on the table, his face dark and gloomy.
I’d been acting differently lately–too deliberate, too obvious.
But he dismissed the thought that I might not need him anymore.
There was no need to dwell on it.
