Chapter

Anderson hadn’t changed much.

He still went to and from school with Helen every day. Sometimes he glanced at me during class, but I didn’t think much of it.

I was leaving in six months anyway.

One day in December, the first snow of the year fell.

The ice cream shop I worked at was packed–I didn’t get off until ten at night.

By the time I stepped outside, snow had piled thick on the ground, crunching under my feet.

I tightened my coat and headed toward the bus stop. Suddenly, someone called my name from behind.

“Jeanice.”

I turned. Anderson stood under the streetlamp, a light dusting of snow on him, holding a black umbrella.

“I’ll walk you home.”

“No need.” I waved him off. “The bus stop’s just ahead.”

“It’s too late. Buses stopped running a while ago.”

He walked over and tilted the umbrella toward me. “I’ve been waiting here almost an hour.”

Chapter 6

I froze. “Why were you waiting for me?”

“Helen said something she shouldn’t have.”

He looked at me, gaze heavy. “I told her–there’s nothing going on between you and me.”

I was even more confused. “That’s between you two. What’s it got to do with me?”

“It does.”

He suddenly stopped.

Snow clung to his lashes like frost.

“Jeanice, tell me the truth… are you reborn?”

My heart clenched–like something had seized it tight.

A rush of heat went to my head, then drained straight into my limbs, cold.

How did he know? Did he get reborn, too?

“You…”

My mouth opened, but no words came out. I could only stare at him.

He looked at my shocked expression and suddenly smiled.

There was some relief in it and a bit of bitterness.

“So it’s true.”

He reached out, like he wanted to touch my hair–but pulled his hand back halfway.

Chapter 6

“During the crash, I held you. I heard what you said.”

I remembered.

Right before I blacked out, I did say something.

I said, “Anderson, if I ever get another chance, I don’t want anything to do with you.”

So he really did hear it.

So he also came back–with all the memories.

I didn’t know when he returned.

But this time around, I really had nothing to say to him.

The snow kept falling, swallowing every sound around us.

We stood under the streetlamp in silence.

Only the soft rustle of snow landing on the umbrella.

“Why?”

A long while later, he finally spoke. His voice was hoarse. “Was I really that bad to you last time?”
