Harrison thought he had won.
He slipped an expensive diamond ring onto my finger, solemnly promising, “Evelyn, I will treat you well for the rest of my life.”
Just then, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen, and his expression changed.
I knew it was Lorelei.
“You should get that,” I said.
Harrison answered the call.
Lorelei’s cloying, babyish voice came through the phone. “Harrison, come quick! The doctor just told me I’m pregnant! It’s wonderful! We’re having a baby!”
The color drained from Harrison’s face as he looked at
me nervously.
I stared back at him, equally stunned.
I had always thought Harrison loved Lorelei without

even realizing it himself.
I never imagined they had already been intimate.
On the very day I lost my child, he was welcoming a
new one.
The irony was so cruel it was suffocating.
My vision tunneled. I shoved myself upright and slapped Harrison hard across the face. “You pig! If you were already sleeping with her, why did you ever propose to me?”
In that moment, I finally understood why Harrison had hated me so much after Lorelei’s death in our past life.
It was because he had not only lost his true love, but also their child.
But what did any of that have to do with me?
Harrison quickly hung up the phone and tried to explain.
“It’s not like that, Evelyn. It wasn’t consensual. I was drunk at that party, and Lorelei came onto me.”
“Evelyn, you’re the one I love. Don’t these four years

prove that?”
I didn’t respond.
My emotions were too turbulent, and I coughed up a mouthful of blood.
Tim rushed over, shoving Harrison. “Get out! Go now!”
Harrison suddenly feigned deep concern. “Evelyn, don’t get too worked up. I’m leaving now.”
He promised, “Don’t worry, I’ll make Lorelei get rid of it. You’re the only one I want carrying my child–the
Prescott heir!”
With that, he turned and hurried away to appease Lorelei.
After he left, Lachlan approached me.
He confessed his feelings for me, his eyes filled with sincerity.
He pleaded, “I’m not afraid of getting involved in this mess, Evelyn. Please, give me a chance to help you.”
