Before Romina could finish her sentence, Joaquin’s broad palm landed on her waist from behind, then slid to her abdomen.
The man’s chest was almost pressed against her back.
He leaned in close to her right ear from behind and asked softly, “Ms. Sandoval, are you trying to keep your distance from me?”
The nervousness Romina had tried to suppress suddenly surged up again.

“These are some pastries I bought for you and Lina a while ago. But there was an emergency at the wellness clinic that day, so I didn’t get a chance to bring them in. Since I had some time today and hap- pened to be nearby, I brought them over for you.‘
A scene flashed through Romina’s mind of the day she punished Valery, when Joaquin appeared at the entrance of the wellness clinic.
If she guessed correctly, it must have been that day.
“There are six flavors in total. I didn’t know which ones you liked, so I picked some that kids usually enjoy. You and your friend can try them too–after all, she can’t finish them all by herself.”
“Then I’ll thank you on Lina’s behalf.”
Joaquin’s gaze fell on the slight curve of her lips, and he strode closer.
He looked down at her delicate features and said in a calm tone, “If you ever get bullied again, and it’s something you can’t handle on your own, you can always tell me. Otherwise, people might think the Bowman family has no one left, that Jericho can’t support you–but I can.”
