Promise 8

After the proposal, Logan and I began planning our wedding in an orderly, joyful rush. 

But just days before the ceremony, I saw Filbert again. 

He was wearing a new suit and holding a bouquet of roses. Despite trying to appear composed, the exhaustion in his face was impossible to hide. 

Before I could say anything, he started to apologize. 

“Felicia, I’m sorry. I was wrong.” 

It had only been two months since I last saw him, yet now, I felt absolutely nothing. 

No anger. No love. 

The man in front of me was nothing more than a stranger. 

When I didn’t respond, Filbert stared at me, desperation in his eyes. “Felicia, I know the whole truth now. I know it was you who saved me back then. I was wrong to blame you–but Nancy tricked me! 

“I’ve already gotten revenge on her. She won’t ever show up in our lives again. Please just give me one more chance. 

“Oh—and the video? It wasn’t me who leaked it. That was Nancy’s doing, too. She set you up. 

“Felicia, I’ve been looking for you nonstop for two months. Are you okay? I missed you so much. Ever since you left, I finally realized how terribly wrong I was.” 

I shook my head and looked at him calmly. 

“Filbert, it’s too late. I gave you ninety–nine chances. You didn’t take a single one.” 

But Filbert kept staring at me, his voice bitter and full of regret. 

“Felicia, I know I hurt you. Tell me what to do to make it right–anything. I’ll do it. 

“Is it because I hit you? I’ll hit myself, too, okay?” 

And with that, he began slapping himself in the face, over and over, apologizing as he went. 

But no matter how dramatic he got, my heart remained completely unmoved. 

“Filbert, the moment you chose Nancy over me for the 99th time, there was no going back for us. 

“So even if you beat yourself to death right here and now, it won’t change a thing. 

“Oh, and–there’s someone I’d like you to meet.”

Chapter 8 

I turned and waved to Logan. 

As he walked over and stood beside me, I smiled and gently took his hand.” 

Our rings clinked together with a crisp sound.

“This is my fiancé, Logan.”

Filbert froze in place, visibly hurt. 

Still unwilling to give up, he muttered, “Felicia, you’re lying, right? You two haven’t known each other long enough to be getting married. 

“I know I messed up–badly. Punish me however you want, but don’t do this to me. I can’t take it.” 

I smiled and shook my head. 

“Logan and I have known each other for over 20 years. He waited for me for ten. He loves me, and I love him.” 

And with that, I turned and kissed Logan. 

Two weeks later, we held a beautiful wedding in a church. 

It was the hundredth time I had worn a wedding dress–but the first time I had chosen the right man. And the first time, I received genuine blessings from everyone in attendance. 

On the day of the wedding, Filbert lingered outside the church. 

He had convinced himself that I still loved him, that I could never truly marry someone else. 

But what he forgot was that my love for him had long since been worn down by his betrayals–over and over again. 

It wasn’t until he saw me and Logan exchange rings under the priest’s blessing that he finally turned and left in defeat. 

Later, I heard from friends back home that Nancy had been driven to a mental breakdown by Filbert’s revenge. 

One night, she snapped and stabbed him with a knife. 

Thankfully, a neighbor discovered it in time and called the police. Filbert survived. 

But from that day on, he had to rely on medication for the rest of his life. 

A year later, I gave birth to twins–a boy and a girl. 

As Logan looked at the babies in the stroller, he leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on my cheek. 

“Honey, I’m so glad I didn’t give up. I finally have you.” 

And I was grateful to fate–for not letting me miss out on the love of my life.
