Chapter 24

Kaden called Damien not long after Julian and Avery took their leave.

“Mr. Whitlow, the doctor said that Serena’s lungs are in perfect condition. There are no signs of damage

whatsoever.”

He hesitated for a few seconds before continuing, “I’ve also looked into Mrs. Whitlow’s previous check-up reports. Her lungs were indeed damaged in the past.”

Damien’s knuckles had turned white from how hard he was gripping his phone. He gritted his teeth and

hissed, “Take Serena back to the villa. She’s not allowed to take a single step out of the building without

my permission.”

Ignoring Eldon’s furious shouting, he disconnected the call and left the hall.

Julian brought Avery back home. Realizing that it was getting late, he personally drew a bath for her. “You can soak in the bath. I’ll prepare dinner.”

Avery shook her head. “You don’t need to. I’m not hungry.”

The words had just left her lips when her stomach rumbled loudly, making her feel a little awkward.

“I haven’t had dinner either, so we can eat together once I’m done,” Julian said with a smile. He pulled out

a packet of biscuits from his pocket and handed them to her. “You can’t soak on an empty stomach. Here,

have this to stave off your hunger for the time being.”

Avery didn’t reject his good intentions any further. She nodded, saying, “Thank you.”

“No problem. It’s my duty to take care of you now that you’re pregnant.” Julian seemed to recall

something just as he was about to leave. “Oh, that’s right. Pregnant women can’t soak for too long. I’ll

remind you to get out later.”

Warmth spread through Avery’s chest. “Okay. Thank you.”

Julian frowned slightly. “We’re married now. It’s my responsibility to take care of you. You don’t need to be

so courteous with me,”

Avery’s phone vibrated just after she finished her bath and changed into a fresh set of clothes. The message was from Julian, informing her that dinner was ready. She hurried downstairs without drying her

hair.

Julian had prepared a large bowl of creamy mushroom pasta, a plate of garden salad, and a pot of lobster bisque. The dishes looked and smelled heavenly, making Avery salivate.

Julian told her to help herself with the food while he went upstairs to grab the hairdryer. She was

momentarily stunned and only realized what he wanted to do when he approached her with it.

“It’s fine,” Avery said. “I can dry my hair myself after I’m done eating.”

2/2

“No,” Julian replied, his tone sounding gentle but determined. “You’ll easily catch a cold if you don’t dry your hair. You can go ahead and eat. I’ll dry your hair for you.”

He then turned on the hairdryer and set it on low heat before carefully drying Avery’s hair.

Avery lowered her head and started to eat, but she was distracted for most of the meal. Catherine had been the only one who ever dried her hair since she was a child. Julian was the first person after

Catherine to treat her so well.

She mulled over her thoughts, but she just couldn’t figure out why he was so in love with her. She ended

up voicing her question to him. “Julian, why do you love me?”

The truth was, she had wanted to ask him this question when he confessed to her five years ago. However, she wasn’t able to do so because of the unique circumstances at the time. She was determined

to get to the bottom of things this time.

Julian chuckled under his breath when he heard her question. “I’ve loved you for ten years, but I still don’t

know why I love you.”

His answer stunned Avery. “Ten years? Have we known each other for so long?”

A smile tugged at Julian’s lips. His expression morphed into a slightly self-deprecating one when he

mumbled, “As expected, you don’t remember me.

“Ten years ago, on Christmas night, you saved a young boy who was covered in blood. You carried him on your back and brought him to the hospital, and you even paid his medical bill for him.”

Avery sifted through her memories and vaguely recalled that something like that did happen. That night, she had separated from her classmates after watching a movie together, and she stumbled upon an injured boy at the entrance of the theater.

The boy was barely breathing and couldn’t even say a word. Worried that his life was in danger, she had carried him on her back to the nearest hospital.

After the doctor determined that the boy had several broken ribs, he was wheeled into the operating

room. Avery left after the boy’s mother arrived at the hospital.

Avery snapped out of her thoughts and pinned Julian with a bewildered look, asking, “The boy that I saved was you?”
