Chapter 23
Serena was shaking violently. “I’m not lying. I’m telling nothing but the truth!”
However, Damien had already grown suspicious of her. He ordered Kaden to take Serena to the hospital for a check-up. Serena refused to comply, grabbing Damien’s hand without any intention of letting go.
“I’m really the one who saved you, Damien. I don’t want to go for a check-up-”
Damien batted her hand away and said coldly, “You don’t have the right to refuse.”
She was going to get a check-up whether she wanted to or not. In the end, Kaden ordered the bodyguards
to haul Serena into the car.
It didn’t take long for peace to be restored in the hall. Eldon sank into a chair and smoked a cigar. His voice was deep and hoarse when he spoke. “All the outsiders are gone now. I want the three of you to tell me everything. Nobody is allowed to leave until we get to the bottom of this.”
Damien felt his chest tighten. “It’s all a misunderstanding, Grandpa. We shouldn’t have caused trouble for
you.”
Eldon ignored him and looked at Avery. “You can start first.”
“Everything I said earlier was the truth, Eldon. Not only does Damien not love me, but he also made me get pregnant with Julian’s child,” Avery explained calmly.
Julian nodded. “She’s right, Grandpa. I went with Avery for the DNA test. The baby in her stomach belongs to me. A month ago, I dropped by a Whitlow-owned hospital for a check-up. The doctor insisted on doing a fertility test at the time. My sperm must have been stolen then.”
He then retrieved the evidence he had prepared beforehand and handed it to Eldon.
Damien’s face twisted. “Grandpa, I-”
“Shut your mouth!” Eldon shouted as fury burned within him. “I was going to make you the successor, but I never could have imagined that you would do something so preposterous. I’m so disappointed in you.”
“Grandpa!” Damien exclaimed with a frown.
“Don’t call me Grandpa,” Eldon retorted. “I don’t have a grandson like you!”
“Eldon, I came here today to personally tell you the truth. I’ll get out of your hair now that you know what really happened,” Avery said calmly.
Julian held Avery’s hand and said, “Get some rest, Grandpa. We’ll visit you again another time.”
“What makes you think you can take my wife away, Julian?” Damien roared furiously.
He lunged forward and tried to pull Julian and Avery apart, but he was stopped in his tracks by Julian’s bodyguards. He struggled wildly but couldn’t free himself from their hold.

Infuriated, Damien spat out through clenched teeth, “Don’t go with him, Avery! I know that I wronged you, but I promise that I’ll never do it again. Give me another chance, please?”
Avery barked out a condescending laugh. “You lied to me for five years. Do you really think that I’ll give you another chance so you can keep lying to me?” she asked in a mocking tone.
Damien’s face turned as white as a sheet. “I’ve learned my lesson. I’ll never lie to you ever again.”
Avery ignored him. She looked at Julian and murmured, “I’m tired. Let’s go.”
Eldon suddenly remembered what Julian had told him over the phone. His breath got caught in his chest before he asked, “Are the two of you together?”
“Yes, Grandpa,” Julian replied, a smile blooming across his face. “We’ve already registered our marriage, so Avery is my wife now.”
He then took Avery’s hand and led her out of the hall.
Damien lost control completely when he saw their tightly intertwined hands. “You did this on purpose, Julian! You don’t love Avery at all. You’re only with her because you want to be the successor! You can’t trust him, Avery!”
Julian halted his footsteps for a moment. He didn’t bother turning his head to look at Damien before he declared, “I got together with Avery because I love her. There’s no other reason.”
