Chapter 11
Serena panicked when she saw Damien turn to leave. She clung to his sleeve and whined, “Don’t go. You promised you’d stay with me.”
Damien frowned. “Be good. I’ll check on Avery and take you out another time.”
“No!” Serena dug in her heels. “If you go now, I won’t speak to you again.”
Damien sighed. “What else do you want to buy?”
Serena huffed. “I’m hungry. I want to eat.”
Damien had no appetite and even less patience, but he still picked a random steakhouse.
While Serena placed her order, Damien kept his eyes glued to his phone.
After the server left, Damien was still checking his phone. The unease was plain on his face.
Jealousy flared in Serena’s chest. For a moment, she wondered if she had miscalculated. Could five
years have been long enough for Damien to actually fall for Avery?
But then, she quickly brushed off the thought. Avery was just a pawn. Maybe Damien just enjoyed sleeping with her. How could he have ever fallen for her?
However, when the food came, Damien couldn’t sit still.
Serena was about to complain when his phone rang.
Damien’s eyes lit up at once. He answered it without even checking the caller ID. “Avery! You finally called! Do you know how long I’ve been waiting?”
“Mr. Whitlow, it’s me,” his assistant, Kaden Wright, said.
Damien’s expression darkened, and he snapped, “What is it?”
Kaden reported that the arrangements for tomorrow’s anniversary dinner were complete.
The news only made Damien more on edge. “Find out what Avery is doing right now and call me back immediately.”
When he hung up, Serena couldn’t hold it in. “You’re really that worried about Avery? Don’t tell me you’ve actually fallen for her. Dami, you promised you’d love only me.”
Damien pinched the bridge of his nose, his patience slipping. “Serena, stop overthinking. Tomorrow is our fifth anniversary. If Avery pulls anything, the entire plan will blow up.”
Serena studied him closely, as though testing his words. “Then will you let me go back with you?”
“Forget it.” He hesitated, then added, “Avery’s been in a bad mood. Don’t stir her up.”

Serena’s face twitched, and the knife in her hand slipped, screeching against the plate. “Dami, are you
worried I’ll upset her, or that she’ll get jealous?”
Damien’s patience snapped. “Didn’t you say you were hungry? Just eat.”
“I won’t!” Serena glared at him. “Not until you tell me the truth. Otherwise, I’ll sit here and starve!”
Damien’s face went cold, his voice dropping low in warning. “Serena, you’re pushing it.”
Serena’s eyes widened in disbelief. He was the one who had spoiled her into having such a bratty temper. He used to drink it up. But now, he dared to bark at her?
Her chest burned with hurt and outrage. She bit her lip and let tears fall. “You don’t love me anymore. You’ve changed, haven’t you?”
Tears were supposed to be her trump card. Usually, by the count of five, Damien would be at her side, coaxing her.
She counted in her head. “One, two, three…”
In the next second, Damien stood. “Finish your meal. I have to go. The driver will take you home later.”
He left without looking back.
Serena sat frozen, then lurched to her feet, only to twist her ankle. A sharp jolt of pain ran through her.
“Damien!” she called after him. “I sprained my ankle. Get back here!”
His steps faltered for half a second. He had clearly heard her.
