Chapter 99

“Sorry?” Elena snapped back to reality and looked at Alexander in shock. “Were you the one who spoke just now?”

After all, those words didn’t seem like something Alexander would say.

“Is there someone else here other than the two of us?” said Alexander, looking down as he sipped on his

water.

Elena subconsciously rubbed the edge of the glass. She could feel the chill of the water on her fingertips, but that couldn’t calm her pounding heart.

She looked at Alexander’s slightly furrowed eyebrows. His usual indifference was shattered by the warm yellow lights, revealing a hint of grievance that was barely noticeable.

“I’m sorry.” Elena looked sheepish. “I was just thinking about work.”

“Ms. Miller, you can actually relax when you’re supposed to be taking a break,” he said as he stared at her.

Elena was taken aback.

She suddenly realized that she was supposed to be resting, yet she couldn’t help but think of work.

On one hand, it was simply her nature, and she had always taken her responsibilities very seriously. On

the other hand, it was probably a habit she had formed in the past five years.

Back when she had been working at Riggs Group, she had always poured a great deal of energy into work

to make Justin’s career thrive. She had often worked overtime until dawn.

When her stomach cramps got so bad that she curled up in the office, all Justin would do was have his

assistant send her medication or oatmeal along with a meaningless expression of concern.

There was a knock on the door, and the servers entered the private room. After they served the food, the

lead server told them to enjoy their meal and ring the bell to call for them at any time. Then, he led the

others out of the room.

Alexander gestured to the mushroom soup in front of Elena and said, “Try this.”

Elena took a spoonful of it, and the warm soup starter glided down her throat, making her feel warm and

fuzzy inside.

It was raining. The sound of raindrops hitting the roof echoed through the private room, creating

background music.

Alexander checked Elena’s baked salmon before putting the plate in front of her. He had picked out all the bones, no matter how tiny, leaving none behind.

“You don’t have to go through all that trouble, Mr. Golden. I can do it myself,” said Elena.

Elena’s heart skipped a beat, and she gripped her spoon tightly without even noticing it.

Fiancee?

It was true that their marriage alliance had already been confirmed. The Miller family and the Golden family had yet to announce it to the public, but it wasn’t wrong to say that she was Alexander’s fiancee.

She just felt something was particularly alluring about that word. She couldn’t describe her feelings at that moment, but one thing was for sure-she didn’t hate it.

“When are we going to announce our marriage to the public?” Elena asked.

“It’s up to you,” Alexander replied.

“Me?” Elena was slightly taken aback. She thought both their families would have already agreed on a

date for a matter like this.

“Yes, everything is up to you,” Alexander said gently. “Don’t be stressed. Just follow your heart.”

Elena pursed her lips. “Actually, you don’t have to go along with me, Mr. Golden. After all, this matter

concerns both our families.”

“Do you think this marriage is just a deal between two families?” he asked.

Elena was at a loss for words. She had always thought so, but she suddenly couldn’t admit it as she

looked into Alexander’s eyes.

All the time she had spent with him started replaying in her mind. It had crossed her mind that he had

only been taking care of her and protecting her because they were about to form a marriage alliance. But something told her that it seemed more complex than that.

She didn’t answer, but that didn’t upset Alexander. He was still as gentle as ever as he said, “Alright. Stop spacing out and just have your dinner.”
