Chapter 89
“Oh, Alexander’s cousin? Why were you having dinner with him out of the blue?” Jane asked.
Elena regained her senses and let out a wry chuckle. “Grandma, isn’t he my fiance? Of course, I have to spend more time with him.”
“What?” Jane exclaimed, “He’s your fiance? Who told you that?”
Elena looked lost. “Isn’t he?”
Even Zachary himself had told her that they were going to be married.
“Of course not! Your fiance is Alexander!” Jane clarified.
An overwhelming wave of shock washed over Elena. “Wh-what did you say? My fiance is Alexander?” she
asked.
“That’s right. I’ve confirmed it with your father many times,” said Jane.
After all; this was her precious granddaughter’s fiance they were talking about. How could she not care about it? If Alexander hadn’t been such an outstanding man, she wouldn’t have agreed so easily.
Elena shot up from the couch. Her sleeve brushed against the cup on the coffee table, making it shake and splashing hot tea on the back of her hand. But she didn’t notice at all.
It was no wonder she hadn’t been able to shake the feeling that something seemed strange about
Zachary. It turned out that he had been feeling guilty.
It also made sense why Alexander couldn’t understand why she wanted to keep her distance from him. It
turned out he was her fiance instead.
“Looks like you’ve been truly mistaken.” Jane shook her head helplessly. “I thought you found out a long time ago. Hold on. Didn’t you guys mention the marriage alliance when you were having dinner with Zachary? Didn’t he explain it to you?”
Elena gripped the edge of the fine wool couch tightly as she said, “Zachary told me that he’s my fiance.”
“How dare he lie to you!” Jane’s eyebrows furrowed. “I thought he was an honest young man. I didn’t think my judgment would be wrong.”
Granted, Elena was the one who had misunderstood at the start, but a normal person would have immediately corrected her, wouldn’t he? Not only did Zachary not deny it, but he had played along and even had the guts to bring it up himself. Such audacity!
Elena fell silent. Her mind was in a mess at that moment. She had no mood to reprimand Zachary
anymore.
Seeing Elena’s reaction, Jane patted the back of her hand gently and said, “Calm down, Lena.”
Elena took a few deep breaths, and she finally regained her composure. Coincidentally, her phone vibrated in her pocket just then. She grabbed it and saw Zachary’s name on the screen.
As soon as she answered, Zachary’s usual gentle voice sounded. “Ms. Miller, tomorrow-”
“Mr. Golden,” said Elena, cutting him off. “Let’s not contact each other anymore.”
There was a long moment of silence on the other end of the call before Zachary’s trembling voice sounded again. “Y-you’ve found out already?”
“Yes, you’re not my fiance.”
“I’m sorry. I-”
“There’s no need to say anything else, Mr. Golden,” Elena said, sounding extremely calm. “I’m at fault too. I didn’t ask beforehand, which caused a misunderstanding. So, I have to apologize to you as well. But at this point, it would be awkward for both of us if we continued contacting each other. Don’t you agree?”
